Abstract

The data is automatically recovered to a desired arbitrary point in an external storage without imposing a burden on the host computer. An application on a host computer instructs data recovery control processing of a disk control apparatus to set a recovery opportunity. It is possible to register arbitrary plural points as a recoverable point by setting a recovery flag included in journal data. In the case in which data is recovered due to occurrence of a failure or the like, the application requests a list showing recovery opportunities which have already been set. The application designates a point to which data is recovered on the basis of the recovery opportunity list. The disk control apparatus recovers the data to the designated point on the basis of a backup disk and a journal disk.

Claims

1. A storage system configured to be connected to a plurality of computers, the storage system comprising:

at least one storage device which comprises a data storage area being configured to store data received from at least one of the plurality of computers, a journal storage area being configured to store a plurality of journal data and a plurality of recoverable points, and a backup storage area being configured to store backup data of data stored in the data storage area at a point, one of the plurality of journal data corresponding to data stored in the data storage area, and one of the plurality of recoverable points being set to recover data stored in the data storage area at a point corresponding to the one of the plurality of recoverable points if the one of the plurality of recoverable points is designated in future; and

a controller which is configured to be connected to the plurality of computers and the at least one storage device and controls a block access request received from at least one of the plurality of computers,

wherein the controller comprises;

a memory which stores at least one of the plurality of recoverable points,

wherein said controller is configured to send information of the plurality of recoverable points to at least one of the plurality of computers by managing the plurality of recoverable points, and to recover data of the data storage area corresponding to a designated recoverable point, designated by the at least one of the plurality of computers, which receives the information of the plurality of recoverable points from the controller, by using a journal data, stored in the journal storage area and corresponding to the designated recoverable point, and the backup data stored in the backup storage area, and

wherein an oldest journal data stored in the journal storage area is removed from the journal storage area, after data corresponding to the oldest journal data is written to the backup storage area.

2. A storage system according to claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to send the information of the plurality of recoverable points in response to a request received from the at least one of the plurality of computers which receives the information of the plurality of recoverable points.

3. A storage system according to claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to send the information of the plurality of recoverable points to the at least one of the plurality of computers from which data are received to the data storage area.

4. A storage system according to claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to send the information of the plurality of recoverable points to at least one host computer as the at least one of the plurality of computers which receives the information of the plurality of recoverable points from the control apparatus.

5. A storage system according to claim 1, wherein the storage system is configured to be coupled to the plurality of computers including a plurality of kind of computers.

6. A storage system according to claim 1, wherein the information of the plurality of recoverable points is a list including the plurality of recoverable points.

7. A storage system according to claim 1, wherein one of the plurality of journal data includes information necessary for recovering data of the data storage area corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points.

8. A storage system according to claim 1, wherein at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is set based on information sent from at least one of the plurality of computers.

9. A storage system according to claim 1, wherein one of the plurality of journal data includes data to be written in the data storage area, a write position of the data to be written in the data storage area and information corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points.

A storage system according to claim 1, wherein the data storage area is a first logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of a plurality of disk drives, the journal storage area is a second logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of the plurality of disk drives, and the backup storage area is a third logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of the plurality of disk drives.

11. A storage system according to claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to select one or more of the plurality of journal data in the journal storage area for recovering the data of the data storage area corresponding to the designated recoverable point.

59. A storage system according to claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to receive information of a recoverable point other than a request for committing data in the data storage area, and

wherein the controller is configured to set the one of the plurality of recoverable points based on the received information of the recoverable point.

60. A storage system according to claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to receive information of a recoverable point other than a data update request for updating data in the data storage area, and

wherein the controller is configured to set the one of the plurality of recoverable points based on the received information of the recoverable point.

12. A system comprising:

a journal storage area storing journal data, the journal data corresponding to data stored in a data storage area which stores received data;

a backup storage area storing backup data of data stored in the data storage area at a point; and

a control apparatus controlling a received block access request and sending information of at least one of a plurality of recoverable points to at least one of a plurality of computers, each of the plurality of recoverable points being set so that the control apparatus can recover data stored in the data storage area at a point corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points if the one of the plurality of recoverable points is selected,

wherein the control apparatus recovers data of the data storage area at a point corresponding to a selected recoverable point, selected by the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is sent from the control apparatus, by using at least a portion of the journal data stored in the journal storage area and the backup data stored in the backup storage area, and

wherein an oldest journal data stored in the journal storage area is deleted from the journal storage area for a new journal data to be stored in the journal storage area.

A system according to claim 12, wherein the control apparatus sends the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points in response to a request to be received from the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is sent.

14. A system according to claim 12, wherein the control apparatus sends the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points to at least one of the plurality of computers sending data to the data storage area.

15. A system according to claim 12, wherein the control apparatus sends the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points to at least one host computer as the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is sent from the control apparatus.

16. A system according to claim 12, wherein the control apparatus sends the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points to the at least one of the plurality of computers including a plurality of kind of computers.

17. A system according to claim 12, wherein the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is a list including the plurality of recoverable points.

18. A system according to claim 12, wherein the portion of the journal data includes information necessary for recovering data of the data storage area at a point corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points.

19. A system according to claim 12, wherein at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is set based on information sent from at least one of the plurality of computers.

20. A system according to claim 12, wherein the control apparatus stores the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points in the control apparatus.

21. A system according to claim 12, wherein the portion of the journal data includes data to be written in the data storage area, a write position of the data to be written in the data storage area and information corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points.

22. A system according to claim 12, wherein the data storage area is a first logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of a plurality of disk drives, the journal storage area is a second logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of the plurality of disk drives, and the backup storage area is a third logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of the plurality of disk drives.

23. A system according to claim 12, wherein the control apparatus selects one or more portions of the journal data in the journal storage area for recovering the data of the data storage area at the point corresponding to the selected recoverable point.

61. A system according to claim 12, wherein the control apparatus receives information of a recoverable point other than a request for committing data in the data storage area, and

wherein the control apparatus sets the one of the plurality of recoverable points based on the received information of the recoverable point.

62. A system according to claim 12, wherein the control apparatus receives information of a recoverable point other than a data update request for updating data in the data storage area, and

wherein the control apparatus sets the one of the plurality of recoverable points based on the received information of the recoverable point.

24. A control apparatus controlling a received block access request, the control apparatus comprising:

at least one port adapted to be coupled to a plurality of computers,

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to perform the process of sending information of at least one of a plurality of recoverable points to at least one of the plurality of computers, each of the plurality of recoverable points being set so that the control apparatus is able to recover data stored in a data storage area at a point- in-time corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points if the one of the plurality of recoverable points is designated,

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to perform the process of recovering data of the data storage area at a point-in-time corresponding to a designated recoverable point, designated by the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is sent from the control apparatus, by using at least a portion of journal data stored in a journal storage area and backup data, stored in a backup storage area and corresponding to data stored in the data storage area at a point-in-time, and

wherein an oldest journal data stored in the journal storage area is removed from the journal storage area, after data corresponding to the oldest journal data is written to the backup storage area.

25. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to perform the process of sending the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points in response to a request to be received from the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is sent.

26. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to perform the process of sending the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points to at least one host computer as the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is sent from the control apparatus.

27. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the at least one port is adapted to be coupled to the plurality of computers including a plurality of kind of computers.

28. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is a list including the plurality of recoverable points.

29. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to perform the process of recovering the data of the data storage area at the point-in-time by using the portion of the journal data including information necessary for recovering data of the data storage area at a point-in-time corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points.

30. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to perform the process of sending the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points, the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points being set based on information sent from at least one of the plurality of computers.

31. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to store the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points in the control apparatus.

32. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to store the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points in the control apparatus.

33. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to perform the process of recovering the data of the data storage area at the point-in-time by using the portion of the journal data including data to be written in the data storage area, a write position of the data to be written in the data storage area and information corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points.

34. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to perform the process of recovering data of the data storage area at the point-in-time corresponding to the designated recoverable point by using at least the point of the journal data stored in the journal storage area being a first logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of a plurality of disk drives, and the backup data stored in the backup storage area being a second logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of the plurality of disk drives.

35. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to select one or more portions of the journal data in the journal storage area for recovering the data of the data storage area at the point-in-time corresponding to the designated recoverable point.

63. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to receive information of a recoverable point other than a request for committing data in the data storage area, and

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to set one of the plurality of recoverable points based on the received information of the recoverable point.

64. A control apparatus according to claim 24, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to receive information of a recoverable point other than a data update request for updating data in the data storage area, and

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to set one of the plurality of recoverable points based on the received information of the recoverable point.

36. A computer program stored on a computer readable storage medium and implemented in a control apparatus, the control apparatus is configured to be coupled to a plurality of computers and controlling a received block access request, the computer program comprising:

code for sending information of at least one of a plurality of recoverable points to at least one of the plurality of computers, each of the plurality of recoverable points being set for being able to recover data stored in a data storage area at a point corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points if the one of the plurality of recoverable points is designated;

code for recovering data of the data storage area at a point corresponding to a designated recoverable point, designated by the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is sent from the control apparatus, by using at least one of a plurality of journal data stored in a journal storage area and backup data stored in a backup storage area of data stored in the data storage area at a point; and

code for deleting an oldest journal data stored in the journal storage area from the journal storage area for a new journal data to be stored in the journal storage area.

37. A computer program according to claim 36, wherein the code, for sending the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points, processes in response to a request to be received from the at least one of the computers to which the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is sent.

38. A computer program according to claim 36, wherein the code, for sending the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points, processes to send the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points to at least one host computer as the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is sent from the control apparatus.

39. A computer program according to claim 36, wherein the code, for sending the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points, processes to send the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points to the at least one of the plurality of computers including a plurality of kind of computers.

40. A computer program according to claim 36, wherein the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points is a list including the plurality of recoverable points.

41. A computer program according to claim 36, wherein the code, for recovering the data of the data storage area at the point, processes to recover the data of the data storage area at the point by using the at least one of the plurality of journal data, and one of the plurality of journal data includes information necessary for recovering data of the data storage area at a point corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points.

42. A computer program according to claim 36, wherein the code, for recovering the data of the data storage area at the point, processes to recover the data of the data storage area at the point by using the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points, the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points being set based on information sent from at least one of the plurality of computers.

43. A computer program according to claim 36, further comprising:

code for storing the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points in the control apparatus.

44. A computer program according to claim 36, further comprising:

code for storing the information of the at least one of the plurality of recoverable points in the control apparatus.

A computer program according to claim 36, whereIn the code, for recovering the data of the data storage area at the point, processes to recover the data of the data storage area at the point by using the at least one of the plurality of journal data, one of the plurality of Journal data including data to be written in the data storage , a write position of the data to be an In the data storage area and information corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverabie points.

46. A computer program according to claim 36, wherein the code, for recovering the data of the data storage area at the point, processes to recover of journal data stored in the journal storage area being a first logical voiume correspondIng to at least a portion of a plurality of disk drives, and the backup data stored in the backup storage being a second logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of a plurality of disk drives.

47. A computer program according to claim 36, further comprising:

code for selecting one or more of the plurality of journal data in the journal storage area for recovering the data of the data storage area at the point corresponding to the designated recoverable point.

65. A computer program according to claim 36, further comprising:

code for receiving information of a recoverable point,

code for receiving a request for committing data in the data storage area, and

code for setting one of the plurality of recoverable points based on the received information of the recoverable point.

66. A computer program according to claim 36, further comprising:

code for receiving information of a recoverable point,

code for receiving a data update request for updating data in the data storage area, and

code for setting one of the plurality of recoverable points based on the received information of the recoverable point.

48. A control apparatus controlling a received block access request, the control apparatus comprising:

at least one first unit adapted to be coupled to a plurality of computers; and

at least one second unit adapted to be coupled to a journal storage area and a backup storage area, the journal storage area storing a plurality of journal data corresponding to a plurality of data stored in a data storage area, the backup storage area storing backup data of data stored in the data storage area at a time,

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to send information of a plurality of recoverable points to at least one of the plurality of computers, one of the plurality of recoverable points being set for being able to recover data of the data storage area at a time corresponding to the one of the plurality of recoverable points if the one of the plurality of recoverable points is designated,

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to recover data of the data storage area at a time corresponding to a designated recoverable point, designated by the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the plurality of recoverable points is sent from the control apparatus, by using one or more of the plurality of journal data stored in the journal storage area and the backup data stored in the backup storage area, and

wherein an oldest journal data stored in the journal storage area is removed from the journal storage area, after data corresponding to the oldest journal data is written to the backup storage area.

49. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to send the information of the plurality of recoverable points in response to a request to be received from the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the plurality of recoverable points is sent.

50. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to send the information of the plurality of recoverable points to at least one host computer as the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the plurality of recoverable points is sent from the control apparatus.

51. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the at least one first unit is adapted to be coupled to the plurality of computers including a plurality of kind of computers.

52. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the information of the plurality of recoverable points is a list.

53. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to recover the data of the data storage area at the time by using the one or more of the plurality of journal data, one of the plurality of journal data including information necessary for recovering data of the data storage area at a time corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points.

54. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to send the information of the plurality of recoverable points, at least one of the plurality of recoverable points being set based on information sent from at least one of the plurality of computers.

55. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to store the plurality of recoverable points in the control apparatus.

56. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to store the information of the plurality of recoverable points in the control apparatus.

57. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to recover the data of the data storage area at the time by using the one or more of the plurality of journal data, one of the plurality of journal data including data to be written in the data storage area, a write position of the data to be written in the data storage area and information corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points.

58. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to recover data of the data storage area at the time corresponding to the designated recoverable point by using the one or more of the plurality of journal data stored in the journal storage area being a first logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of a plurality of disk drives, and the backup data stored in the backup storage area being a second logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of the plurality of disk drives.

67. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to receive information of a recoverable point other than a request for committing data in the data storage area, and

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to set the one of the plurality of recoverable points based on the received information of the recoverable point.

68. A control apparatus according to claim 48, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to receive information of a recoverable point other than a data update request for updating data in the data storage area, and

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to set the one of the plurality of recoverable points based on the received information of the recoverable point.

69. A control apparatus controlling a received block access request, the control apparatus comprising:

at least one unit adapted to be coupled to a plurality of computers, a journal storage area and a backup storage area, the journal storage area storing a plurality of journal data corresponding to a plurality of data stored in a data storage area, the backup storage area storing backup data of data stored in the data storage area at a time,

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to receive information of a recoverable point other than a request for committing data in the data storage area,

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to set one of a plurality of recoverable points based on the received information of the recoverable point, so that the control apparatus is able to recover data of the data storage area at a time corresponding to the one of the plurality of recoverable points if the one of the plurality of recoverable points is designated,

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to send information of the plurality of recoverable points to at least one of the plurality of computers,

wherein the control apparatus is adapted to recover data of the data storage area at a time corresponding to a designated recoverable point, designated by the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the plurality of recoverable points is sent from the control apparatus, by using one or more of the plurality of journal data stored in the journal storage area and the backup data stored in the backup storage area, and

wherein an oldest journal data stored in the journal storage area is deleted from the journal storage area for a new journal data to be stored in the journal storage area.

70. A control apparatus according to claim 69, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to send the information of the plurality of recoverable points in response to a request to be received from the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the plurality of recoverable points is sent.

71. A control apparatus according to claim 69, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to send the information of the plurality of recoverable points to at least one host computer as the at least one of the plurality of computers to which the information of the plurality of recoverable points is sent from the control apparatus.

72. A control apparatus according to claim 69, wherein the at least one unit is adapted to be coupled to the plurality of computers including a plurality of kind of computers.

73. A control apparatus according to claim 69, wherein the information of the plurality of recoverable points is a list.

74. A control apparatus according to claim 69, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to recover the data of the data storage area at the time by using the one or more of the plurality of journal data, one of the plurality of journal data including information necessary for recovering data of the data storage area at a time corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points.

75. A control apparatus according to claim 69, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to send the information of the plurality of recoverable points, at least one of the plurality of recoverable points being set based on information sent from at least one of the plurality of computers.

76. A control apparatus according to claim 69, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to store the information of the plurality of recoverable points in the control apparatus.

77. A control apparatus according to claim 69, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to recover the data of the data storage area at the time by using the one or more of the plurality of journal data, one of the plurality of journal data including data to be written in the data storage area, a write position of the data to be written in the data storage area and information corresponding to one of the plurality of recoverable points.

78. A control apparatus according to claim 69, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to recover data of the data storage area at the time corresponding to the designated recoverable point by using the one or more of the plurality of journal data stored in the journal storage area being a first logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of a plurality of disk drives, and the backup data stored in the backup storage area being a second logical volume corresponding to at least a portion of the plurality of disk drives.

79. A control apparatus according to claim 69, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to set the one of the plurality of recoverable points at the timing, which is different from a timing of receiving a request for committing data in the data storage area.

80. A control apparatus according to claim 69, wherein the control apparatus is adapted to receive the information of the recoverable point other than a data update request for updating data in the data storage area.
