1. A sensor system for measuring an analyte in a host, the system comprising:

  • a sensor adapted for transcutaneous insertion into a host'"'"'s skin;

    a housing adapted for placement adjacent to the host'"'"'s skin;

    an electronics unit configured to be releasably attachable to the housing; and

    an applicator configured to insert the sensor through the housing and into the skin of the host, wherein the applicator is adapted to releasably mate with the housing, and wherein the applicator is released from the housing in response to a connection of the electronics unit with the housing.
