Abstract

The present technique provides a system and method for automatically switching viewing orientations of a display in response to physical rotation of the display. The display is rotatably coupled to a base structure via a rotatable mechanism, which has one or more angular switches/sensors that sense the physical orientation of the display and trigger a change in the viewing orientation of the display. The display may be a stand-alone flat-panel display or it may be incorporated into a portable electronic/computing devices, such as a tablet computer. Moreover, the base structure may embody a display support, a port replicator, a docking station, or any other suitable structure having a rotational adjustment mechanism.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a rotatable mount structure for a display, wherein the rotatable mount structure comprises;

a first rotational axis joint configured to rotate the display between a landscape physical orientation and a portrait physical orientation with respect to a base of the rotatable mount structure;

a second rotational axis joint configured to rotate the display between a generally upright physical orientation and a generally horizontal physical orientation with respect to the base of the rotatable mount structure; and

automatic switch circuitry responsive to an angular position change of the rotatable mount structure, wherein the automatic switch is operable to detect changes between the landscape and portrait physical orientations and between the generally upright and generally horizontal physical orientations.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the rotatable mount structure comprises a rotatable display coupling.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the display is disposed in a tablet portable computer having a single housing for the display and internal computer components.

The system of claim 1, wherein the automatic switch comprises a first angular position sensor coupled to the rotatable mount structure and configured to sense rotation of the display about the first rotational axis joint, and a second angular position sensor coupled to the rotatable mount structure and configured to sense rotation of the display about the second rotational axis joint.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the automatic switch circuitry comprises hardware and software switching mechanisms.

The system of claim 1, wherein the automatic switch circuitry is operable to detect movement between the landscape physical orientation and the portrait physical orientation, and the automatic switch circuitry is operable to detect movement between the generally upright physical orientation and the generally horizontal physical orientation.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the automatic switch circuitry is enclosed inside the rotatable mount structure.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the automatic switch circuitry is configured to change the display between different display orientation modes and to change the display between different operational modes.

The system of claim 1, wherein the automatic switch circuitry is configured to change the display between different landscape and portrait orientation modes corresponding to the landscape and portrait physical orientations, respectively, and the automatic switch circuitry is configured to change the display between different upright and horizontal modes corresponding to the generally upright and generally horizontal physical orientations, respectively.

10. A docking structure, comprising:

a support base comprising a plurality of expansion components;

a rotatable mount, comprising;

an arm having a first end rotatably coupled to the support base; and

a tablet support section rotatably coupled to the arm at a second end opposite from the first end, wherein the tablet support section is configured to removably support a tablet computing device having a display;

a first display mode switch responsive to angular position changes of the rotatable mount between landscape and portrait physical orientations; and

a second display mode switch responsive to angular position changes of the rotatable mount between generally upright and horizontal physical orientations.

11. The docking structure of claim 10, wherein the expansion components comprise a plurality of communication ports.

12. The docking structure of claim 10, comprising an angular position sensor enclosed inside the rotatable mount.

13. The docking structure of claim 10, wherein the second display mode switch comprises a switch mechanism coupled to the rotatable mount at a switching point associated with the generally upright physical orientation or the horizontal physical orientation of the display.

14. The docking structure of claim 10, wherein the first display mode switch triggers a viewing orientation switch algorithm configured to change display modes between landscape and portrait viewing orientations to correspond with the landscape and portrait physical orientations, respectively.

15. A tablet computer system, comprising:

a tablet computing device, comprising;

a single panel-shaped enclosure;

a display integrated within the single panel-shaped enclosure;

a plurality of personal computer components integrated within the single panel-shaped enclosure; and

a first mount structure; and

a docking structure, comprising;

an expansion component for the tablet computing device;

a second mount structure rotatably and removably intercoupleable with the first mount structure and rotatably intercoupleable with the expansion component; and

an automatic viewing orientation switch for the display coupled to the first or second mount structures, wherein the automatic viewing orientation switch is responsive to angular position changes of the display.

16. The tablet computer system of claim 15, wherein the display comprises a screen-activated user interaction mechanism.

17. The tablet computer system of claim 15, wherein the second mount structure comprises a pivotal arm.

18. The tablet computer system of claim 15, wherein the automatic viewing orientation switch comprises an angular position sensor enclosed inside the docking structure.

19. The tablet computer system of claim 15, wherein the automatic viewing orientation switch comprises a switch mechanism coupled to the first and second mount structures at a switching point associated with a generally upright physical orientation or a horizontal physical orientation of the display.

20. A method, comprising the acts of:

rotatably supporting a display relative to a base structure via first and second rotatable structures, wherein the first rotatable structure has a first range of rotation between landscape and portrait physical orientations of the display with respect to the base structure, and the second rotatable structure has a second range of rotation between generally upright and horizontal physical orientations of the display with respect to the base structure;

automatically switching display orientation modes of the display in response to a first physical rotation of the display between orientations of the display; and

automatically switching operational modes of the display in response to a second physical rotation of the display.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the act of rotatably supporting comprises the act of hingedly supporting the display relative to the base structure.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the act of hingedly supporting comprises the act of providing an elevational variation mechanism for the display.

23. The method of claim 20, wherein the act of automatically switching modes of the display comprises the act of internally sensing the physical rotation.

24. The method of claim 20, wherein the act of automatically switching modes of the display comprises the act of toggling at least one switch.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the act of toggling the one switch comprises the acts of:

triggering a portrait-to-landscape orientation switch; and

activating a viewing orientation change mechanism to position a displayed image on the display in a user readable orientation.

26. The method of claim 24, wherein the act of toggling the one switch comprises the acts of:

triggering a landscape-to-portrait orientation switch; and

activating a viewing orientation change mechanism to position a displayed image on the display in a user readable orientation.
