Abstract

A system and/or method for sensing the presence of moisture (e.g., rain) and/or other material(s) on a window such as a vehicle window (e.g., vehicle windshield, sunroof or backlite). In certain example embodiments, a plurality of sensing capacitors are supported by a window such as a vehicle windshield, the capacitors each having a different field and/or pattern. A sensing circuit outputs an analog signal that is based on and/or related to the capacitances of one or more of the sensing capacitors. In certain example embodiments, a switching circuit is provided in order to selectively switch between different sensing capacitors or combinations thereof (or even possibly antennas and/or bands), in order to change the sensing field being analyzed and/or change the feature being searched for. For example, in certain example embodiments, the switching circuit may selectively switch between: (a) capacitor(s) for detecting rain on an exterior surface of the window, and (b) capacitor(s) for detecting one or more of ice on an exterior surface of the window, mist on an exterior surface of the window, and/or moisture on an interior surface of the window.

Claims

1. A rain sensor comprising:

a sensing circuit comprising a plurality of sensing capacitors supported by a vehicle window,

one or more of the sensing capacitors being sensitive to moisture on an external surface of the window and including first and second spaced apart capacitor electrodes that are substantially coplanar; and

a switching circuit for selectively coupling the plurality of sensing capacitors to read-out circuitry of the rain sensor; and

wherein at least part of at least one of the sensing capacitors has a fractal geometry.

The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the switching circuit comprises first and second switches associated with each of a plurality of the sensing capacitors, said first switch for selectively coupling the associated sensing capacitor to the read-out circuitry and the second switch for selectively coupling the associated sensing capacitor to ground.

The rain sensor of claim 2, wherein, when a given sensing capacitor of the plurality is coupled to the read-out circuitry, the first switch relating to the given sensing capacitor is closed and the second switch relating to the given sensing capacitor is open so that the given capacitor is decoupled from ground when coupled to the read-out circuitry.

4. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the fractal geometry is such that the at least one sensing capacitor functions as its own Faraday shield or quasi-Faraday shield so as to reduce adverse effects of EMI interference.

5. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the fractal geometry is selected from the group consisting of a Hilbert fractal and a Cantor fractal.

6. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the first and second capacitor electrodes each have a meandering shape and are substantially parallel to each other.

The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein at least one of the sensing capacitors comprises a fractal geometry so that lateral flux caused by the fractal geometry allows the capacitor to be sensitive to moisture on the external surface of the window that is not located directly over the first sensing capacitor.

8. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the window is one of a vehicle windshield, a vehicle backlite, and/or a vehicle sunroof.

The rain sensor of claim 1, further comprising means for autocorrelating data relating to and/or from the at least one sensing capacitor to obtain autocorrelated data, and means for determining based at least on said autocorrelated data whether moisture is present on the external surface of the window.

10. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the first and second spaced apart capacitor electrodes are electrically conductive and are supported by an interior glass sheet of a vehicle windshield, wherein the vehicle windshield comprises both the interior glass sheet and an exterior glass sheet.

11. The rain sensor of claim 10, wherein the first and second spaced apart capacitor electrodes are located on the surface of the interior glass sheet closest to an interior of the vehicle.

12. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein an opaque layer is provided on the window so as to shield the at least one sensing capacitor from a view of a passenger inside the vehicle.

The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the at least one sensing capacitor is part of a sensing circuit, the sensing circuit further comprising at least one mimicking capacitor that mimics at least charging and/or discharging of the first sensing capacitor, wherein a writing pulse causes at least the first sensing capacitor to be charged and an erasing pulse causes each of the first sensing capacitor and the mimicking capacitor to substantially discharge;

wherein presence of rain on the external surface of the window in a sensing field of the first sensing capacitor causes a voltage at an output electrode of the mimicking capacitor to fluctuate in a manner proportional to fluctuation of voltage at an output electrode of the first sensing capacitor, even though the rain is not present in a field of the mimicking capacitor; and

wherein rain is detected based on an output signal from the output electrode of the mimicking capacitor, wherein the output signal is read at least between an end of the writing pulse and a beginning of the erase pulse.

14. The rain sensor of claim 1, wherein the first capacitor electrode of the sensing capacitor receives a charging signal and the second capacitor electrode of the sensing capacitor is spaced apart from the first capacitor electrode;

and

wherein the second capacitor electrode is floating so that the sensing capacitor is isolated from ground.

The rain sensor of claim 1, further comprising at least one correlating engine that autocorrelates information from, or relating to, the at least one sensing capacitor to determine whether rain is present on the exterior surface of the window, or cross-correlates information from, or relating to, the at least one sensing capacitor to determine how fast to operate at least one wiper of a vehicle or an amount of rain on the external surface of the window.

16. An electronic device comprising:

a rain sensing circuit comprising a plurality of different fractal capacitor sensors, and

a switching circuit for selectively coupling different ones or combinations of the fractal capacitor sensors to read-out circuitry.

17. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the different fractal sensors have different sizes or patterns.

18. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the different fractal sensors have different orientations, and may or may not have the same pattern or size.

19. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the fractal sensors comprise antenna elements having different bands.

20. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the switching circuit comprises first and second switches associated with each of a plurality of the fractal structures, said first switch for selectively coupling the associated fractal sensor to the read-out circuitry and the second switch for selectively coupling the associated fractal structure.
