- control logic;
a memory, coupled to the control logic, that stores data and instructions executable by the control logic; and
an optical data capture element that captures data from an unidentified printed document;
wherein the instructions include;
instructions that cause the data capture element to capture an arbitrary human-readable text sequence from the unidentified printed document, the arbitrary human-readable text sequence representing less than a whole page in the body of the unidentified printed document;
instructions that cause the mobile phone to derive from the arbitrary captured text sequence a document signature that identifies i) the printed document and ii) a location within the body of the printed document; and
instructions that cause the mobile phone to indicate that an action layer associated with the printed document was identified in accordance with the document signature, the action layer indicating a plurality of actions specific to the identified location within the body of the printed document.

A portable device having scanning, imaging or other data-capture capability is described. In some cases, the portable device can indicate to the user when enough information has been captured to uniquely identify a source document. In some cases, the portable device calculates timestamps and location-stamps indicating when and where a data capture occurred. In some cases, the portable device is controlled by gestures. In some cases, the portable scanning device has associated billing and content/service subscription information.

2. A computer-implemented method for processing a text capture operation, comprising:

receiving an indication that a user of a mobile phone has performed a text capture operation via said mobile phone on an unidentified printed document the text capture operation capturing an arbitrary text sequence, wherein said arbitrary text sequence represents less than a whole page of human-readable text from the body of the printed document; determining that the received indication comprises sufficient information to derive a document signature that identifies i) the printed document and ii) a location within the body of the printed document; and determining that the document signature comprises sufficient information to identify an action layer associated with the printed document, the action layer indicating a plurality of actions specific to the identified location within the body of the printed document. - View Dependent Claims (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14)
