Abstract

An apparatus is disclosed that includes a haptic actuator operatively associated with a pedal assembly of the vehicle, a human-machine interface (HMI) for enabling the driver to select between a plurality of fuel savings settings, and a controller coupled to a data interface in the vehicle and the HMI interface for causing the haptic actuator to provide feedback to the driver when an aspect of vehicle operation crosses at least one of a plurality of speed and acceleration thresholds responsive to the HMI setting. Additionally, a coaching method provides haptic-based feedback that will not interfere with the operation of the vehicle. This method of closed-loop feedback provides a timely signal to the driver in a way that will encourage a change in driver style over time, such as backing off the accelerator pedal to accelerate at a lower rate and braking earlier with less intensity. As not all driver preferences are the same under all conditions, the HMI selector will help coach the driver by providing feedback that best fits their driving preference at the particular time.

Claims

1. An apparatus for providing coaching feedback to an operator of a vehicle that will encourage the vehicle to be driven with high fuel economy, comprising:

a haptic actuator operatively associated with an accelerator control assembly of said vehicle for providing feedback to said operator;

a human-machine interface that enables the vehicle operator to select between a plurality of fuel saving settings of increasing fuel economy; and

a haptic controller configured to provide coaching feedback to said operator through said haptic actuator when said vehicle crosses at least one of a plurality of speed and acceleration thresholds responsive to said fuel saving settings of said human-machine interface.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said haptic controller includes different speed thresholds for city and highway driving regimes.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said acceleration thresholds depend at least in part upon vehicle speed.

4. The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein at least one of said speed thresholds for said city and highway driving regimes is different for each of said fuel saving settings of said human-machine interface.

The apparatus according to claim 1, further including a haptic actuator operatively associated with a brake control assembly of said vehicle, and said haptic controller further being configured to provide coaching feedback through said haptic actuator for said brake control assembly in response to the crossing of at least one of a plurality of deceleration-related thresholds.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein one of said deceleration-related thresholds is a predetermined coastdown time and another one of said deceleration-related thresholds is indicative of braking intensity.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said haptic controller is connected to a diagnostic port in said vehicle.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said haptic actuator is a vibration motor adhesively mounted to a stationary element of said accelerator control assembly.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said human-machine interface is a multiple-use interface in said vehicle.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said human-machine interface includes a visually perceptible display and said haptic controller is further configured to convey positive feedback messages to said operator through said display.

11. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said human-machine interface also includes a setting without said coaching feedback.

12. An aftermarket apparatus for providing coaching feedback to an operator of a vehicle that will encourage the vehicle to be driven with high fuel economy, comprising:

a haptic actuator for providing feedback to the vehicle operator, said haptic actuator including a mounting to facilitate installation on an accelerator control assembly of said vehicle; and

a haptic controller having a first interface for connecting to a diagnostic port of said vehicle and a second interface for communicating with a human-machine interface, said haptic controller being configured to provide coaching feedback to said operator through said haptic actuator when said vehicle crosses at least one of a plurality of speed and acceleration thresholds for a fuel saving setting selectable through said human-machine interface.

13. The aftermarket apparatus according to claim 12, wherein said mounting for said haptic actuator includes an adhesive backing for enabling quick installation to a part of said accelerator control assembly.

14. The aftermarket apparatus according to claim 13, wherein said mounting is a hook and loop mounting.

15. The aftermarket apparatus according to claim 12, wherein said haptic controller is housed in an enclosure and said human-machine interface is a switch that also includes a setting without said coaching feedback.

The aftermarket apparatus according to claim 12, further including a second haptic actuator, said second haptic actuator having a mounting to facilitate installation on a brake control assembly of said vehicle, and said haptic controller further being configured to provide coaching feedback through said second haptic actuator when said vehicle crosses at least one of a plurality of deceleration-related thresholds.

17. The aftermarket apparatus according to claim 16, wherein one of said deceleration- related thresholds is a predetermined coastdown time and another one of said deceleration- related thresholds is indicative of braking intensity.

18. A method of providing coaching feedback to an operator of a vehicle that will encourage the vehicle to be driven with high fuel economy, comprising the steps of:

providing coaching feedback through a haptic actuator operatively associated with an accelerator control assembly of said vehicle when the speed of said vehicle crosses a variable speed threshold; and

providing coaching feedback through said haptic actuator when the acceleration of said vehicle crosses a variable acceleration threshold.

19. The method according to claim 18, wherein said speed and acceleration thresholds are dependent upon a fuel saving setting selected through a human-machine interface.

20. The method according to claim 19, wherein said acceleration threshold is also variable with vehicle speed.

21. The method according to claim 19, wherein said speed threshold is also variable with city and highway driving.

22. The method according to claim 18, including the step of providing coaching feedback through a haptic actuator operatively associated with a brake control assembly of said vehicle when said vehicle crosses at least one of a plurality of deceleration-related thresholds.

23. The method according to claim 18, including the step of displaying estimated travel time information to the driver based on past trips.
