Abstract

Apparatus having a fiber optic tether disposed in coiled tubing for communicating information between downhole tools and sensors and surface equipment and methods of operating such equipment. Wellbore operations performed using the fiber optic enabled coiled tubing apparatus includes transmitting control signals from the surface equipment to the downhole equipment over the fiber optic tether, transmitting information gathered from at least one downhole sensor to the surface equipment over the fiber optic tether, or collecting information by measuring an optical property observed on the fiber optic tether. The downhole tools or sensors connected to the fiber optic tether may either include devices that manipulate or respond to optical signal directly or tools or sensors that operate according to conventional principles.

Claims

1. A method of treating a subterranean formation intersected by a wellbore comprising the steps of:

deploying a fiber optic tether into a coiled tubing, the fiber optic tether having a degree of slack relative to the coiled tubing;

deploying the coiled tubing, a borehole tool and a sensor into the wellbore;

optically connecting the fiber optic tether to the borehole tool and the sensor;

performing a stimulation well treatment operation with the borehole tool, wherein the stimulation well treatment operation comprises at least one adjustable parameter;

operating the sensor to obtain a measured property related to the stimulation well treatment operation;

using the fiber optic tether to convey the measured property; and

adjusting the least one adjustable parameter of the stimulation well treatment operation in real time based on the measured property.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said performing the stimulation treatment operation comprises injecting at least one fluid into the formation to stimulate the flow of hydrocarbons therefrom.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the stimulation treatment operation is a matrix stimulation operation and the at least one fluid comprises an acidic fluid.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the measured property is obtained concurrently with the performing of the stimulation well treatment operation.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the measured property is obtained concurrently with said adjusting.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the well treatment operation comprises injecting at least one fluid into the wellbore.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the well treatment operation comprises injecting at least one fluid into the coiled tubing.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the well treatment operation comprises injecting at least one fluid into the wellbore annulus outside of the coiled tubing.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the well treatment operation comprises injecting at least one fluid into the coiled tubing and at least one fluid into the wellbore annulus outside of the coiled tubing.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein said obtaining and said using are performed in real time.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the measured property is selected from the group consisting of pressure, temperature, pH, amount of precipitate, and fluid temperature.

12. The method of claim 4 wherein the measured property is pressure and the well treatment operation further comprises the step of maintaining said pressure below a predetermined limit.

13. The method of claim 2 wherein the at least one adjustable parameter is selected from the group consisting of quantity of injection of the at least one fluid, relative proportions of each fluid when the at least one fluid includes multiple injected fluids, the chemical concentration of each fluid when the at least one fluid includes multiple injected fluids, concentration of a catalyst in the at least one fluid, concentration of a polymer in the at least one fluid.

14. The method of claim 1 said performing the stimulation treatment operation comprises injecting multiple fluids into the formation to stimulate the flow of hydrocarbons therefrom.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the well interval is within a branch of a multi-lateral well.

16. The method of claim 3 wherein the matrix stimulation operation comprises injecting at least one fluid into the formation and the at least one fluid comprises a mixture of fluids and solid chemicals.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein the coiled tubing is positioned to provide fluids to a subterranean formation and the well treatment operation impedes flow of water from the formation.

18. The method of claim 6 wherein at least one of the fluids is foamed.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein the stimulation well treatment operation comprises communicating with the borehole tool via the fiber optic tether.

20. A method of performing an operation in a subterranean wellbore comprising:

deploying a non-cable fiber optic tether into a coiled tubing;

deploying the coiled tubing, a borehole tool and a sensor into the wellbore;

optically connecting the fiber optic tether to the borehole tool and the sensor;

operating the sensor to obtain a measured property related to the operation;

sending the measured property to a control system over the fiber optic tether; and

transmitting control signals from the control system to the borehole tool over the fiber optic tether to adjust the operation based on the measured property.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the fiber optic tether comprises a metal tube surrounding at least one optical fiber.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising leaving the fiber optic tether in the wellbore.

23. The method of claim 20 wherein the fiber optic tether is deployed into the coiled tubing by pumping a fluid into the coiled tubing.

24. The method of claim 20 wherein an outer diameter of the fiber optic tether is less than about 0.125 inches.

25. The method of claim 24 wherein the property is measured in real time.

26. The method of claim 24 wherein the measured property is selected from the set of bottomhole pressure, bottomhole temperature, distributed temperature, fluid resistivity, pH, compression/tension, torque, downhole fluid flow, downhole fluid compressibility, tool position, gamma-ray, tool orientation, solids bed height, and casing collar location.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein the property is selected from distributed temperature, tool position and tool orientation and the wellbore is a multilateral well.

28. An apparatus for performing an operation in a wellbore, comprising:

coiled tubing adapted to be disposed in a wellbore;

surface control equipment;

a borehole tool connected to the coiled tubing and comprising a measurement device for measuring a property related to the operation; and

a fiber optic tether installed in the coiled tubing and optically connected to each of the borehole tool, the measurement device and the surface control equipment, the fiber optic tether comprising a first optical fiber for transmission of signals from the measurement device to the surface control equipment and a second optical fiber for transmission of signals from the surface control equipment to the borehole tool to adjust the operation based on the measured property.

29. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein the borehole tool comprises the measurement device to measure said property related to the operation and generate an output and an interface device to convert the output from the measurement device to an optical signal.

The apparatus of claim 29 wherein the property measured is selected from the group of pressure, temperature, distributed temperature, pH, amount of precipitate, fluid temperature, depth, chemical luminescence, gamma-ray, resistivity, salinity, fluid flow, fluid compressibility, viscosity, compression, stress, strain, tool location, tool state, tool orientation, and combinations thereof.

31. The apparatus of claim 28 further comprising a device to enter into a predetermined branch of a multi-lateral well.

32. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein the fiber optic tether is a non-cable and comprises a metal tube surrounding at least one optical fiber, and wherein an outer diameter of the fiber optic tether is less than about 0.125 inches.

33. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein the operation is a well stimulation treatment operation for stimulating a flow of hydrocarbons from a previously drilled portion of the wellbore.

34. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein the well stimulation treatment operation comprises injecting at least one fluid into a formation in the wellbore.

35. The apparatus of claim 28 further comprising a downhole termination whereby the first and second optical fibers are connected.

36. The method of claim 28, further comprising retracting the coiled tubing and measurement tool from the wellbore.

37. The method of claim 28 further comprising measuring a property while retracting the coiled tubing and measurement tool from the wellbore.

38. The method of claim 28 wherein the measured property is conveyed in real time.

39. The method of claim 38 wherein the property is measured concurrently with the performing of a well treatment operation.

40. The method of claim 28 further comprising adjusting the measured property for depth and motion of the measurement tool.
