Abstract

Method and apparatus for charging a power supply unit such as a rechargeable battery for use in data monitoring and management system using the ESD protection circuitry of the existing electrode contacts including guard contact and counter electrode thereby reducing system cost, complexity, and any unprotected battery contacts exposed for potential contamination is provided.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

providing a plurality of contacts, each of the plurality of contacts for coupling to a respective one of a working electrode, a reference electrode and a counter electrode of a sensor;

providing a power supply including a rechargeable battery;

providing battery recharging circuitry operatively coupled to two of the plurality of contacts and the rechargeable battery, the recharging circuitry including an electrostatic discharge protection circuit; and

charging the rechargeable battery via the plurality of contacts when the plurality of the contacts are decoupled from the sensor;

providing a signal representative of an indication of charging the rechargeable battery when the plurality of contacts are decoupled from the sensor; and

suspending wireless data communication during charging the rechargeable battery.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first and second contacts of the battery charging circuitry are operatively coupled respectively to one of the guard contact and the counter electrode contact.

3. The method of claim 1 including providing a data communication device, wherein the rechargeable battery is configured to provide power to the data communication device.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the data communication device includes a data transmitter configured to transmit measured glucose data.

5. The method of claim 4 further including the step of configuring the transmitter to receive the measured glucose data from the sensor.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the sensor includes one of a subcutaneous sensor or a transcutaneous sensor, configured to detect an analyte level.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the analyte level includes a glucose level.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising monitoring at least one of the current through and the voltage drops across the battery recharging circuitry while charging the rechargeable battery.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the signal representative of the indication of the recharging process includes one of a visual, audible, or vibratory indication, or one or more combinations thereof.

10. The method of claim 1 including transmitting the signal representative of the indication of the recharging process to a remote location.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the battery recharging circuitry is inductively coupled to the two of the plurality of contacts.

12. An apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of contacts, each configured for coupling to a respective one of a working electrode, a reference electrode or a counter electrode of an analyte sensor and configured to couple to a voltage output contact and a ground contact of a charging system;

a rechargeable battery;

a battery recharging circuitry operatively coupled between the plurality of contacts and the rechargeable battery, the recharging circuitry comprising electrostatic discharge protection circuitry; and

a processor operatively coupled to the battery recharging circuitry and configured to generate or one or more signals representative of an indication of charging the rechargeable battery;

wherein the rechargeable battery is configured to provide power to the apparatus when the plurality of contacts are coupled to the sensor, and wherein the rechargeable battery is configured to charge via the plurality of contacts when the plurality of contacts is coupled to the charging system, and wherein the plurality of contacts are disconnected from the sensor when coupled to the charging system.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the battery recharging circuitry is coupled to two of the plurality of contacts.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 wherein the two contacts are those configured to couple to the guard contact and the counter electrode of the sensor.

15. The apparatus of claim 12 further comprising a data transmitter configured to transmit measured glucose data received from the sensor.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the transmission by the data transmitter is suspended when the rechargeable battery is coupled to the charging system.

17. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the sensor includes one of a subcutaneous sensor or a transcutaneous sensor.

18. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the electrostatic discharge protection circuitry comprises at least two contacts, each coupled in series to a resistor coupled to a pair of electrostatic discharge diodes.

19. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the contacts configured to couple to the guard contact and work electrode of the sensor are maintained at substantially the same potential.

20. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the processor is configured to output the generated one or more signals representative of the indication of the recharging status.
