Abstract

Arrangement and method for classifying an occupying item in a seat includes at least one force sensor arranged to measure the force applied to the seat at time intervals, and a processor coupled to the force sensor(s) for receiving the force measurements therefrom. The processor analyzes the force measurements from each force sensor over time to discern patterns in the force measurements and analyzes any discerned pattern to determine if it approximates a known pattern indicative of an animate object or an inanimate object. The processor may be trained to discern patterns providing information about the occupying item by conducting tests in which different occupying items are placed in the seat and measurements of the force applied to the seat are obtained by the force sensor, before, during and after placement of the occupying item in the seat.

Claims

1. An arrangement for classifying an occupying item in a seat, comprising:

at least one force sensor arranged to measure the force applied to the seat at different times during a time period in which the occupying item is continuously in the seat;

a determination arrangement that obtains information that affects the weight of the occupying item; and

a processor coupled to said at least one force sensor and said determination arrangement and receiving the force measurements from said at least one force sensor and the information from said determination arrangement,

said processor being arranged to analyze the force measurements from said at least one force sensor measured in the time period and the information from said determination arrangement to discern patterns in the force measurements or changes in the force measurements during the time period in the applied force and analyze any discerned pattern to determine if it approximates a known pattern indicative of an animate object or an inanimate object.

The arrangement of claim 1, wherein said processor is programmed to discern patterns providing information about the occupying item through conducting tests in which different occupying items are placed in the seat and measurements of the force applied to the seat are obtained by said at least one force sensor, before, during a time period and after placement of the occupying item in the seat.

3. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein said determination arrangement is arranged to measure effects on the seat caused by load of a seatbelt associated with the seat whereby the information is dependent on the load caused by the seatbelt.

The arrangement of claim 1, further comprising a measurement system coupled to said processor and that measures dynamic forces applied to the seat by a structure of a vehicle in which the seat is situated, said processor being arranged to consider the dynamic forces applied to the seat and measured by said measurement system when discerning patterns of oscillation or time varying changes in the force applied by the occupying item.

5. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein said at least one force sensor comprises a pressure sensor.

6. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein said at least one force sensor comprises a strain gage sensor.

7. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein said at least one force sensor comprises a bladder having at least one chamber and at least one transducer for measuring pressure in a respective one of said at least one chamber.

8. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein said processor is arranged to determine whether the occupying item is belted by analyzing the measurements from by said at least one force sensor over time and the information from said determination arrangement over time.

9. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein said determination arrangement is arranged to measure effects on the force of road roughness, steering maneuvers, or a vehicle suspension system whereby the information is dependent on the road roughness, steering maneuvers and the vehicle suspension system.

10. The arrangement of claim 1, wherein said determination arrangement comprises at least one accelerometer.

11. The arrangement of claim 10, wherein said at least one accelerometer comprises a vertical accelerometer.

12. A method for determining weight of an occupying item in a seat of a vehicle while the vehicle is moving, comprising:

measuring the force applied to the seat at different consecutive times during a time period in which the occupying item is continuously in the seat;

obtaining a function representative of forces which affect the weight of the occupying item during movement of the vehicle, the step of obtaining the function comprising arranging at least one accelerometer on the vehicle and deriving the function based in part on the effects on the seat caused by the load of a seatbelt associated with the seat when the seatbelt is in use; and

determining the weight of the occupying item based on measured force applied to the seat and the function.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the at least one accelerometer comprises a vertical accelerometer.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the step of measuring the force applied to the seat comprises arranging a bladder having at least one chamber in the seat and measuring pressure in the at least one chamber by means of a respective transducer.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the step of obtaining the function comprises deriving the function based in part on the effects on the seat of road roughness, steering maneuvers, or a vehicle suspension system.

16. A method for classifying an occupying item in a seat in a vehicle, comprising:

measuring the force applied to the seat by the occupying item at different times during a time period in which the occupying item is continuously in the seat;

measuring a force that affects the weight of the occupying item during the time that the occupying item is in the seat; and

identifying the existence of patterns in the consecutive measurements of the force applied to the seat during the time period and analyzing any identified pattern to determine if it approximates a known pattern indicative of an animate object or an inanimate object,

the step of identifying the existence of patterns comprising the step of utilizing a pattern recognition algorithm to identify patterns in the measurements of the force applied to the seat during the time period and identifying the existence of patterns in the measurements of the force applied to the seat and the measured force.

The method of claim 16, wherein the step of identifying the existence of patterns further comprises determining the pattern recognition algorithm by conducting tests in which different occupying items are placed in the seat and measuring the force applied to the seat before, during a time period and after placement of the occupying item in the seat.

The method of claim 16, further comprising measuring dynamic forces applied to the seat by structure of a vehicle in which the seat is situated during the time that the occupying item is in the seat, the step of identifying the existence of patterns further comprising identifying the existence of patterns in the measurements of the force applied to the seat by the occupying item and the measurements of the dynamic forces applied to the seat by the vehicle structure.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein the pattern recognition algorithm comprises a trained pattern recognition algorithm.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein the pattern recognition algorithm comprises a neural network.

21. An arrangement for classifying an occupying item in a seat in a vehicle, comprising:

at least one force sensor arranged to measure the force applied to the seat at different times during a time period in which the occupying item is continuously in the seat; and

a processor coupled to said at least one force sensor and receiving the force measurements from said at least one force sensor,

said processor being arranged to analyze the force measurements from said at least one force sensor measured in the time period to determine whether the force measurements vary in a manner indicative of an animate object or an inanimate object.
