1. A surgical fastener applying apparatus, comprising:

  • a cartridge half-section having at least one upstanding plate extending from an upper surface of the cartridge half-section, wherein the upstanding plate is located near a proximal end thereof and defines a channel formed therein; and

    an anvil half-section selectively matable with the cartridge half-section, wherein said cartridge and anvil half-sections are relatively movable from an unmated position to a mated position with one another, the anvil half-section supporting a pin configured for selective engagement in the channel of the upstanding plate, the pin having a body portion and a head portion extending radially outward from the body portion, the pin limiting an angle at which the cartridge half-section and the anvil half-section are properly mateable wit one another from a position where they are separate and not in contact, and wherein the body portion of the pin defines a longitudinal axis and the head portion of the pin defines a longitudinal axis, and wherein the longitudinal axis of the body portion of the pin is spaced from the longitudinal axis of the head portion of the pin.
