1. A computer-implemented method of managing record identifiers, comprising:
- responsive to a request to generate a record identifier for a record according to a sequence of arbitrarily-assigned record identifiers;
determining a next number in a numeric sequence to be assigned;
comparing the next number to a rule set governing record identifiers, the rule set including a plurality of rules, each of which governs a mutually-exclusive interval of numeric ranges in the numeric sequence and each of which maps to a respective range of record identifiers;
identifying, from the comparison, an interval in which the next number lies;
converting the next number to a corresponding record identifier according to a conversion defined by a rule associated with the identified interval; and
assigning the corresponding record identifier to the record.
