1. An apparatus for focusing a beam of ultrasonic vibration comprising means to generate ultrasonic vibrations and lens means affixed to said generating means and adapted to focus said ultrasonic vibration at a predetermined zone, wherein the lens means is divided into a plurality of regions each of which comprises material having a wave velocity different from that of adjacent regions, wherein at least two adjacent regions comprise of different materials, said different materials each displaying an appropriate phase velocity constant, and separated by tubes of an isolating material, and wherein an inner region of said at least two adjacent regions has a lower phase velocity than an outer region of said at least two adjacent regions so that said ultrasonic vibrations transmitted from said at least two adjacent regions are in-phase and convergent.
