1. A method of displaying an image with a display device, the method comprising:

  • determining first and second pluralities of gradients from image data for the image, wherein the first and the second pluralities of gradients correspond to first and second regions of influence, respectively, of first and second pixel values of a first sub-frame, respectively;

    generating the first sub-frame and a second sub-frame from the image data, wherein generating the first sub-frame includes calculating the first sub-frame pixel value in the first sub-frame using a first sharpening factor determined from the first plurality of gradients and calculating the second sub-frame pixel value in the first sub-frame using a second sharpening factor determined from the second plurality of gradients, and wherein the first sharpening factor differs from the second sharpening factor; and

    alternating between displaying the first sub-frame in a first position and displaying the second sub-frame in a second position spatially offset from the first position;

    wherein generating the first sub-frame includes calculating the first sub-frame pixel value in the first sub-frame by applying the first sharpening factor to an error term, and wherein generating the first sub-frame includes calculating the second sub-frame pixel value in the first sub-frame by applying the second sharpening factor to the error term.
