1. A device for displaying a color image comprising:

  • an illumination source comprising a plurality of color light sources, each able to produce respective light of each of m different wavelength spectra, wherein m is equal to or greater than three;

    an array of attenuating elements, each able to selectively attenuate the light produced by said plurality of color light sources of said illumination source according to an attenuation pattern corresponding to a gray-level representation of said color image;

    an array of color sub-pixel filter elements able to receive selectively attenuated light from said array of attenuating elements, each sub-pixel filter element able to transmit light of one of n different colors, wherein n is equal to or greater than four; and

    an optics unit to combine said light of said plurality of color light sources to form a substantially uniform illumination of light of said n colors across said array of attenuating elements.
