1. A needle injector device for connection in fluid-flow communication with the inlet or outlet port of a reservoir, the needle injector comprising:

  • a housing having an interior surface surrounding a generally hollow interior volume that is in a generally cylindrical shape having a first end and a second end, the interior surface having a central axis that passes through the first end and the second end of the generally cylindrical shaped interior volume, the interior surface having an inner circumference, a first groove forming a generally spiral path around at least a portion of the inner circumference and a second groove extending in a generally linear path that is generally parallel to the central axis;

    a moveable cam member supported for movement within the interior volume of the housing between a retracted position and an extended position, the cam member having a projection for extending into the first and second grooves, the cam member for supporting a needle for movement with the cam member between the retracted position and extended position;

    wherein when the moveable cam is in the retracted position the needle is within the generally hollow interior volume of the housing;

    wherein when the moveable cam is in the extended position a portion of the needle extends out of the housing;

    at least one bias member for imparting on the moveable cam member, a rotary force around the central axis, and a linear force in a direction parallel to the central axis, the rotary force is applied on the moveable cam member and moves the moveable cam member along the spiral path and the linear force is applied in a direction toward the retracted position;

    a stop structure for engaging and holding the moveable cam member in the retracted position;

    wherein, when the moveable cam member is held in the retracted position by the stop surface, the moveable cam member that selectively disengages from the stop structure and moves from the retracted position to the extended position, in a rotary direction around the central axis and simultaneously in a direction generally parallel to the central axis, while the cam projection follows the spiral path of the first groove;

    wherein the projection of the cam member engages the spiral path of the first groove due to the rotary force of the at least one bias member when the cam member is pushed toward the extended position; and

    wherein, when the moveable cam member is in the extended position, the moveable cam member moves from the extended position toward the retracted position, in a generally linear direction that is generally parallel to the central axis, while the cam projection follows the generally linear path of the second groove due to the linear force applied by the at least one bias member.
