Abstract

A vacuum cleaner includes a dust collector that compresses dust stored inside a dust container to minimize the volume of the dust. The dust collector would include one or more pressing plates that are used to compress the dust stored in dust collector. Various methods are used to control movements of the movable pressing plates to facilitate the compression operations. Also, various methods are used to determine when the dust collector is full and needs to be emptied.

Claims

1. A vacuum cleaner, comprising:

a main body;

a dust separation unit mounted on the main body;

a dust container mounted on the main body that collects dust separated by the dust separation unit; and

a dust compression unit that compresses dust stored in the dust container, wherein the dust compression unit comprises a movable member that rotates to compress dust stored in the dust container.

2. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, wherein the movable member is mounted in a dust storage chamber of the dust container, and wherein the movable member rotates within the dust storage chamber to compress dust stored in the dust container.

3. The vacuum cleaner of claim 2, wherein outer edges of the movable member are positioned closely adjacent to inner walls of the dust storage chamber.

4. The vacuum cleaner of claim 2, wherein the dust storage chamber is cylindrical, and wherein the movable member rotates within the dust storage chamber to compress dust in the dust storage chamber.

The vacuum cleaner of claim 4, wherein the movable member is a generally rectangular movable plate, wherein a first side edge of the movable plate is rotatably mounted at approximately a center of the cylindrical dust storage chamber, and wherein the movable plate rotates about the center of the cylindrical storage chamber.

6. The vacuum cleaner of claim 5, further comprising a fixed plate mounted in the dust storage chamber, wherein the movable plate compresses dust against the fixed plate.

7. The vacuum cleaner of claim 6, wherein the movable plate can be rotated in opposite directions to thereby compress dust against opposite sides of the fixed plate.

8. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, wherein the dust container is removably mounted on the main body such that the dust container can be detached from the main body so that dust can be emptied from the dust container.

9. The vacuum cleaner of claim 8, wherein the dust separation unit is positioned on the main body immediately adjacent to the dust container such that dust separated in the dust separation unit will fall into the dust container.

10. The vacuum cleaner of claim 9, wherein a separation wall separates the dust separation unit from the dust container, and wherein an aperture in the separation wall allows dust to pass from the dust separation unit into the dust container.

11. The vacuum cleaner of claim 10, wherein the dust compression unit further compression a fixed compression plate mounted in the dust container wherein the movable member compresses dust against the fixed compression plate.

12. The vacuum cleaner of claim 11, wherein the aperture in the separation wall is located at a position spaced apart from the fixed compression plate.

13. The vacuum cleaner of claim 11, wherein the dust container is cylindrical, and wherein the movable member is rotatably mounted in the dust container so that it can move in opposite directions to compress dust against opposite sides of the fixed compression plate.

14. The vacuum cleaner of claim 13, wherein the aperture in the separation wall is located opposite to the location of the fixed compression plate.

15. The vacuum cleaner of claim 8, wherein the dust separation unit is also removably mounted on the main body.

16. The vacuum cleaner of claim 15, wherein the dust separation unit is removably coupled to the dust container.

17. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, wherein the movable member can be manually operated by a user to compress dust in the dust container.

18. The vacuum cleaner of claim 17, wherein the dust container comprises a lever coupled to the movable member, wherein a user can manually operate the lever to cause the movable member to compress dust in the dust container.

19. The vacuum cleaner of claim 18, further comprising a driving mechanism coupled between the lever and the movable member.

20. The vacuum cleaner of claim 19, wherein the movable member is rotatably mounted in the dust container, and wherein the driving mechanism converts approximately linear movement of an end of the lever into rotational movement of the movable member.

21. The vacuum cleaner of claim 20, wherein the driving mechanism comprises:

a rack bar having a rack, wherein the rack bar is mounted on the dust container such that it can move in opposing linear directions; and

a pinion gear coupled to the movable member, wherein the pinion gear interacts with the rack such that linear movements of the rack bar cause the pinion gear and the attached movable member to rotate.

22. The vacuum cleaner of claim 21, further comprising a return spring that is coupled to the drive mechanism, wherein the return spring tends to return the movable member to an at test position.

23. The vacuum cleaner of claim 21, further comprising a shock absorbing element coupled between the lever and the drive mechanism, wherein the shock absorbing element prevents excessive forces applied to the lever from reaching the movable member.

24. The vacuum cleaner of claim 23, wherein the shock absorbing element comprises an elastic element coupled between the lever and the rack bar.

25. The vacuum cleaner of claim 21, further comprising at least one guide rib formed on the dust container, wherein the at least one guide rib guides linear movement of the rack bar.

26. The vacuum cleaner of claim 20, wherein the driving mechanism comprises:

a rack bar having a rack, wherein the rack bar is mounted on the dust container such that it can move in opposing linear directions;

a pinion gear rotatably mounted on the dust container wherein the pinion gear interacts with the rack such that linear movements of the rack bar cause the pinion gear to rotate; and

a driven gear rotatably mounted on the dust container and attached to the movable member, wherein the driven gear interacts with the pinion gear such that rotation of the pinion gear causes the driven gear and the movable member to rotate.

27. The vacuum cleaner of claim 26, further comprising a return spring that is coupled to the drive mechanism, wherein the return spring element tends to return the movable member to an at rest position.

28. The vacuum cleaner of claim 26, further comprising a shock absorbing element coupled between the lever and the drive mechanism, wherein the shock absorbing element prevents excessive forces applied to the lever from reaching the movable member.

29. The vacuum cleaner of claim 28, wherein the shock absorbing element comprises an elastic element coupled between the lever and the rack bar.

30. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1, wherein the dust compression unit further comprises a drive motor coupled to the movable member.

31. The vacuum cleaner of claim 30, wherein the movable member moves in a reciprocating fashion within the dust container.

32. The vacuum cleaner of claim 2, wherein the drive motor causes the movable member to rotate in alternating directions.

33. The vacuum cleaner of claim 32, further comprising at least one stationary compression member, wherein the movable member compresses dust in the dust container against the at least one stationary compression member.

34. The vacuum cleaner of claim 33, wherein the dust container is cylindrical, wherein the movable member is a substantially rectangular movable plate, wherein a first side edge of the movable member is rotatably mounted at approximately a center of the cylindrical dust container, and wherein the movable member rotates about the center of the cylindrical storage chamber.

35. The vacuum cleaner of claim 34, wherein the at least one stationary compression member comprises a stationary plate, and wherein the movable member compresses dust against opposite sides of the stationary plate.

36. The vacuum cleaner of claim 30, wherein the dust container is removably mounted in a receiving space of the main body, wherein a driving gear is coupled to a rotating shaft of the drive motor, and wherein at least a portion of the driving gear is exposed in the receiving space.

37. The vacuum cleaner of claim 36, wherein a driven gear is coupled to the movable member, wherein at least a portion of the driven gear is exposed on an exterior of the dust container, and wherein the driven gear couples to the driving gear when the dust container is mounted in the receiving space.

38. The vacuum cleaner of claim 37, wherein the driven gear protrudes from a bottom surface of the dust container, wherein a depression is formed on a bottom surface of the receiving space, and wherein the driven gear is received in the depression when the dust container is mounted in the receiving space.

39. The vacuum cleaner of claim 38, wherein the driving gear protrudes into the depression.

40. A vacuum cleaner, comprising:

a main body having a receiving space;

a dust container removably mounted in the receiving space, wherein the dust container is configured to receive and collect dust; and

a dust compression unit that compresses dust stored in the dust container, wherein the dust compression unit comprises at least one movable compression plate that is rotatably mounted in the dust container, and wherein the at least movable compression plate is configured to rotate to compress dust in the dust container against at least one stationary surface.

41. The vacuum cleaner of claim 40, wherein the dust compression unit further comprises a lever coupled to the at least one movable compression plate, wherein a user can manually operate the lever to cause the at least one movable compression plate to compress dust in the dust container.

42. The vacuum cleaner of claim 40, wherein the dust compression unit further comprises a drive motor coupled to the at least one movable dust compression plate, wherein the drive motor causes the at least one movable compression plate to compress dust in the dust container.

43. The vacuum cleaner of claim 42, wherein the drive motor causes the at least one movable compression plate to alternately rotate in opposite directions.

44. The vacuum cleaner of claim 43, wherein the at least one stationary surface comprises a stationary compression plate, and wherein drive motor causes the at least one movable compression plate to compress dust against opposite sides of the at least one stationary plate.

45. A vacuum cleaner, comprising:

a main body;

a dust separation unit mounted on the main body;

a dust container mounted on the main body that collects dust separated by the dust separation unit;

a dust compression unit that compresses dust stored in the dust container; and

a driving unit that drives the dust compression unit, wherein the driving unit is selectively coupled to the dust compression unit.

46. The vacuum cleaner of claim 45, wherein the driving unit is coupled to the dust compression unit when the dust container is mounted on the main body, and wherein the driving unit is dc-coupled from the dust compression unit when the dust container is removed from the main body.

47. The vacuum cleaner of claim 46, wherein the driving unit comprises a driving gear that is at least partially exposed on the main body adjacent a mounting location of the dust container, wherein the dust compression unit comprises a driven gear that is at least partially exposed on an outer surface portion of the dust container, and wherein the driven gear is mated to the driving gear when the dust container is mounted on the main body.

48. The vacuum cleaner of claim 47, wherein the driving unit further comprises a motor that is permanently mounted on the main body, and wherein the driving gear is mounted on a rotating shaft of the motor.
