Abstract

Liquid infusion apparatus includes non-magnetic materials in a pumping structure and drive motor therefor, and in a controller that supplies drive signals to the motor to facilitate convenient operation in intense magnet fields without distorting the magnetic fields and without radiating objectionable radio-frequency interference.

Claims

1. An IV infusion delivery apparatus capable of operating in an MRI environment, the apparatus comprising:

a pump disposed to receive a liquid conduit and to transfer IV liquid through the liquid conduit from a liquid IV container source;

an ultrasonic actuator constructed substantially of non-magnetic material which creates mechanical movement of the pump in response to applied multiphasic electrical signals to provide positive displacement of the IV liquid from the IV container source; and

a controller, including a central processing unit and memory, that stores operating programs, the controller disposed within an electrically conductive shielding structure that is constructed of non-magnetic material for operation in an MRI environment, the controller communicating with the ultrasonic actuator to selectively energize the actuator to drive the pump, and thereby transfer liquid from the IV container source through the liquid conduit at a controllable volumetric rate,

wherein the controller and the ultrasonic actuator are housed within an integrated housing unit.

2. The IV infusion delivery apparatus of claim 1, wherein the pump comprises a plurality of peristaltic pump elements.

3. The IV infusion delivery apparatus of claim 2, where the plurality of peristaltic pump elements are positioned linearly along the liquid conduit.

4. The IV infusion delivery apparatus of claim 3, wherein the plurality of pump elements are actuated in sequence to squeeze the liquid conduit.

5. The IV infusion delivery apparatus of claim 2, where the plurality of peristaltic pump elements are positioned to move in a rotational manner.

6. The IV infusion delivery apparatus of claim 1, wherein the pump actuates a squeeze roller against the liquid conduit.

7. The IV infusion delivery apparatus of claim 1, wherein the controller is in communication with a sensor that provides information indicative of pump speed.

8. The IV infusion delivery apparatus of claim 1, wherein the IV infusion delivery apparatus may be positioned close to a patient during image acquisition without significantly distorting a magnetic field around an MRI scanner.

9. The IV infusion delivery apparatus of claim 1, wherein the IV infusion delivery apparatus may be positioned close to a patient during image acquisition without RFI from the IV infusion delivery apparatus substantially interfering with detection of RF echoes by an MRI device.

10. The IV infusion delivery apparatus of claim 1, wherein the MRI environment comprises an MRI scanning room.

11. A pumping apparatus capable of operating in an MRI environment, comprising:

a plurality of pump elements arranged to squeeze a liquid conduit in a peristaltic manner;

an ultrasonic actuator constructed of non-magnetic material which effects mechanical movement of the plurality of pump elements in response to applied multiphasic electrical signals, the mechanical movement of pump elements providing positive displacement of an IV liquid from an IV container source;

a controller communicating with the ultrasonic actuator to selectively energize the actuator at a controllable rate; and

a housing constructed of non-magnetic conductive shielding material disposed around the controller and the ultrasonic actuator to substantially inhibit radiation of RFI.

12. The pumping apparatus of claim 11, wherein the housing comprises a radio-frequency interference filter providing a portal for conductive material to enter the housing while substantially inhibiting radiation of RFI.

13. The pumping apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a display of an operating parameter.

14. The pumping apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a battery for stand-alone operation.

15. The pumping apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a power supply receiving line voltage from a plug.

16. A method of providing positive displacement of an IV liquid from an IV container source in an MRI environment, comprising:

receiving input from a control unit to establish a fluid dose of an IV liquid to be delivered from an IV container source;

engaging a liquid conduit with a plurality of pump elements arranged to squeeze the liquid conduit in a peristaltic manner; and

applying a multiphasic electrical signal to an ultrasonic actuator constructed of non-magnetic material, the actuator being coupled to the plurality of pump elements and thereby providing positive displacement of an IV liquid from an IV container source, wherein the control unit and the ultrasonic actuator are part of an integrated housing unit and wherein operation of the actuator to provide positive displacement of the IV liquid from the IV container source does not significantly distort a magnetic field around an MRI scanner.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising using feedback information about the operation of the pump elements to control activation of the multiphasic electrical signal.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the activation of the multiphasic electrical signal provides displacement of the IV liquid at a controlled rate.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the rate is a controlled volume per unit time.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the feedback information comprises information about pump speed.
