Abstract

A printer, method and printed item are provided where the printer and method print an image having a relatively high durability and/or resolution. In particular, the printer and method include a plasma treatment stage or step for treating the surface of an item prior to printing. A printer is provided that is configured to convey an item or a plurality of individuated items through a plasma treatment stage to prepare the surfaces of the item for printing. Such printer may use a non-continuous ink jet printing assembly such as a drop on demand printing assembly.

Claims

1. A method of printing an item comprising:

providing an item having a surface for printing;

feeding the item onto a conveyor defining a conveyor path;

providing an electrode head having a gas inlet and a plasma outlet configured to provide multiple streams of plasma in a series arranged along the conveyor path;

ionizing a gas input through the gas inlet to create a plasma, providing multiple streams of the plasma in the series while conveying the item along the conveyor path through the series of the multiple streams of the plasma and directing the multiple streams of the plasma in said series to at least one specific area of the surface where printing is to occur while the item is being conveyed; and

subsequently printing an image on the at least one specific area of the surface with a drop on demand ink jet printer;

wherein the step of directing the multiple streams of the plasma through the plasma outlet to at least one specific area of the surface where printing is to occur comprises splitting the plasma with a furcated nozzle couple to the plasma outlet.

2. The method of printing of claim 1 wherein the step of providing an item comprises providing a plurality of items.

3. The method of printing of claim 1 wherein the step of directing plasma comprises containing at least a portion of the plasma in an at least partially confined area when the item is conveyed across the plasma.

4. The method of printing of claim 1 further comprising the step of cleaning electrostatic charges from the surface.

5. The method of printing an item of claim 1 wherein the step directing the multiple streams of the plasma through the plasma outlet to at least one specific area of the surface where printing is to occur comprises:

directing plasma to a plurality of specific areas of the surface of the item; and

subsequently printing on the specific areas of the surface of the item.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the step directing the multiple streams of the plasma through the plasma outlet to at least one specific area of the surface where printing is to occur comprises:

directing plasma to a predetermined portion of the surface of item prior to printing on the predetermined portion of the surface of the item.

7. The method of printing an item of claim 6 further comprising the step of printing an image on the predetermined portion of the surface of the item.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of ionizing a gas comprises ionizing an inert gas input through the gas inlet to create a plasma consisting essentially of the ionized inert gas.

8. A method of printing an item comprising:

providing an item having a surface for printing;

feeding the item onto a conveyor defining a conveyor path;

providing an electrode head having a gas inlet and a plasma outlet;

ionizing a gas input through the gas inlet to create a plasma;

splitting plasma that is exiting the plasma outlet to provide multiple streams of the plasma generated from the electrode head, wherein said multiple streams are arranged in a series along the conveyor path;

conveying the item across the multiple streams of plasma in the series;

directing the multiple streams of the plasma to the surface of the item in the series while the item is being conveyed; and

printing an image on the surface of the item;

wherein the step of splitting the plasma comprises splitting the plasma with a furcated nozzle coupled to the plasma outlet.

10. The method of claim 8 wherein the step of ionizing a gas comprises ionizing an inert gas input through the gas inlet to create a plasma consisting essentially of the ionized inert gas.
