1. A method of using a mobile device to authenticate a printed token and output an image associated with the token, the token having a two dimensional pattern of coded data, the coded data having a plurality of coded data portions that each encode an identity and a different signature fragment of a digital signature, the signature fragment being only a part of the digital signature, the mobile device comprising a transmitter, a receiver, a sensor and processing means, the method comprising the steps of:

  • using the sensor to sense at least one of the coded data portions within the two dimensional pattern of coded data;

    using the processing means to determine the identity and the signature fragment encoded in the coded data portion sensed by the sensor;

    using the transmitter to send first data to a remote computer system, the first data being indicative of the identity and the signature fragment being only part of the digital signature;

    comparing the identity against valid identities;

    verifying the signature fragment is a fragment of the digital signature associated with the identity;

    authenticating the token in response to the signature fragment being a fragment of the digital signature and the identity matching one of the valid identities;

    using the receiver to receive second data from the remote computer system in reply to the first data, the second data being indicative of whether the token is authentic;

    determining an image associated with the token, using the unique identity; and

    outputting the image from the mobile device in a visible form.
