Abstract

A computer-controlled injector of the type having a motor which advances and retracts a plunger located within a syringe housing toward and away from a nozzle located in the front of the syringe to inject fluid into or out of an animal subject. Manual motion is induced by operating a manual motion control; the operator can manipulate the control to indicate the desired direction and velocity of motion. The manual motion control also has a locking mode in which manual motion of the plunger will continue once initiated without requiring the operator to continue manipulating the manual motion control. The injector performs injections in accordance with one of several pre-programmed protocols, and automatically tracks the fluid volume remaining. The injector compensates for plunger extenders found in some partially pre-filled syringes by applying a stored offset value to the computed plunger position.

Claims

1. A medical fluid injector comprising:

a mount that accepts a syringe, wherein the mount comprises a magnet;

a plunger drive for moving a plunger of the syringe forward and rearward inside the syringe;

an electronic control circuit controlling the plunger drive; and

a hall effect sensor located adjacent the mount and connected to the control circuit, wherein the hall effect sensor is positioned to detect magnetic field from the magnet to identify the mount and is configured to deliver a first signal to the control circuit indicative of a magnetic field, and the control circuit is configured to respond to the first signal by altering an operating function of the injector.

2. The injector of claim 1, wherein the control circuit controls the plunger drive to move the plunger in the syringe in accordance with a preprogrammed injection protocol.

3. The injector of claim 1, wherein the mount comprises a removable face plate.

The injector of claim 1, further comprising a second hall effect sensor connected to the control circuit for delivering a second signal to the control circuit indicative of a magnetic field, the control circuit responding to the first and second signals to alter operating functions of the injector.

5. The injector of claim 1, wherein the control circuit uses the first signal to compensate for a size of a syringe mounted to the injector when controlling the plunger drive.

6. The injector of claim 1, wherein the first signal from the hall effect sensor identifies whether the mount is in an open condition or a closed condition.

7. The injector of claim 1, wherein the plunger drive comprises a motor, a drive ram, and a gear box for translating rotary motion generated by the motor to linear motion of the drive ram.

8. The injector of claim 1, wherein the control circuit comprises a digital circuit and an analog to digital converter for converting analog signals from the current sensor to digital signals for use by the digital circuit in identifying a pressure generated within the syringe.

9. The injector of claim 1, wherein the control circuit comprises a digital circuit and a digital to analog converter for converting control signals generated by the digital circuit to analog signals for controlling the plunger drive.

10. The injector of claim 1, wherein the injector further comprises a keypad, and the control circuit comprises a keyboard interface for receiving signals from the keypad indicative of key presses by a user for use in controlling the plunger drive.

11. The injector of claim 1, wherein the control circuit further comprises a digital interface for coupling the control circuit to an external system to allow remote monitoring and/or control of the injector.

12. The injector of claim 5, wherein the control circuit responds to the first signal by altering an end of travel position to which the plunger drive will move the plunger inside the syringe.

13. The injector of claim 5, wherein the control circuit responds to the first signal by altering a syringe size.

14. The injector of claim 13, wherein the control circuit identifies the syringe size to an injector operator.

15. The injector of claim 7, wherein the control circuit comprises a current sensor detecting an electrical current delivered to the motor, the control circuit responsive to the current sensor to identify a pressure generated within the syringe.

16. A medical fluid injector comprising:

a mount that accepts a syringe;

a plunger drive for moving a plunger of the syringe forward and rearward inside the syringe;

an electronic control circuit controlling the plunger drive; and

a hall effect sensor connected to the control circuit,

wherein the mount comprises a magnet, and the hall effect sensor is positioned to detect a magnetic field from the magnet to identify the mount, and

wherein the hall effect sensor is configured to deliver a first signal to the control circuit indicative of the magnetic field, and the control circuit is configured to respond to the first signal by altering an operating function of the injector.

17. The injector of claim 16, wherein the control circuit controls the plunger drive to move the plunger in the syringe in accordance with a preprogrammed injection protocol.

18. The injector of claim 16, wherein the mount comprises a removable face plate.

19. The injector of claim 16, further comprising a second hall effect sensor connected to the control circuit for delivering a second signal to the control circuit indicative of a magnetic field, the control circuit responding to the first and second signals to alter operating functions of the injector.

20. The injector of claim 16, wherein the control circuit uses the first signal to compensate for a size of a syringe mounted to the injector when controlling the plunger drive.

21. The injector of claim 16, wherein the first signal from the hall effect sensor identifies whether the mount is in an open condition or a closed condition.

22. The injector of claim 16, wherein the plunger drive comprises a motor, a drive ram, and a gear box for translating rotary motion generated by the motor to linear motion of the drive ram.

23. The injector of claim 16, wherein the control circuit comprises a digital circuit and an analog to digital converter for converting analog signals from the current sensor to digital signals for use by the digital circuit in identifying a pressure generated within the syringe.

24. The injector of claim 16, wherein the control circuit comprises a digital circuit and a digital to analog converter for converting control signals generated by the digital circuit to analog signals for controlling the plunger drive.

25. The injector of claim 16, wherein the injector further comprises a keypad, and the control circuit comprises a keyboard interface for receiving signals from the keypad indicative of key presses by a user for use in controlling the plunger drive.

26. The injector of claim 20, wherein the control circuit responds to the first signal by altering an end of travel position to which the plunger drive will move the plunger inside the syringe.

27. The injector of claim 16, wherein the control circuit further comprises a digital interface for coupling the control circuit to an external system to allow remote monitoring and/or control of the injector.

28. The injector of claim 20, wherein the control circuit responds to the first signal by altering a syringe size.

29. The injector of claim 28, wherein the control circuit identifies the syringe size to an injector operator.

30. The injector of claim 22, wherein the control circuit comprises a current sensor detecting an electrical current delivered to the motor, the control circuit responsive to the current sensor to identify a pressure generated within the syringe.

31. A medical fluid injector comprising:

a mount that accepts a syringe;

a plunger drive for moving a plunger of the syringe forward and rearward inside the syringe;

an electronic control circuit controlling the plunger drive; and

a hall effect sensor located adjacent the mount and connected to the control circuit, wherein the hall effect sensor is configured to deliver a first signal to the control circuit indicative of a magnetic field, the control circuit is configured to respond to the first signal by altering an operating function of the injector, the first signal from the hall effect sensor identifies whether the mount is in an open condition or a closed condition.

32. The injector of claim 31, wherein the control circuit controls the plunger drive to move the plunger in the syringe in accordance with a preprogrammed injection protocol.

33. The injector of claim 31, wherein the mount comprises a removable face plate.

34. The injector of claim 31, further comprising a second hall effect sensor connected to the control circuit for delivering a second signal to the control circuit indicative of a magnetic field, the control circuit responding to the first and second signals to alter operating functions of the injector.

35. The injector of claim 31, wherein the plunger drive comprises a motor, a drive ram, and a gear box for translating rotary motion generated by the motor to linear motion of the drive ram.

36. The injector of claim 31, wherein the control circuit comprises a digital circuit and an analog to digital converter for converting analog signals from the current sensor to digital signals for use by the digital circuit in identifying a pressure generated within the syringe.

37. The injector of claim 31, wherein the control circuit comprises a digital circuit and a digital to analog converter for converting control signals generated by the digital circuit to analog signals for controlling the plunger drive.

38. The injector of claim 35, wherein the control circuit comprises a current sensor detecting an electrical current delivered to the motor, the control circuit responsive to the current sensor to identify a pressure generated within the syringe.

39. The injector of claim 31, wherein the injector further comprises a keypad, and the control circuit comprises a keyboard interface for receiving signals from the keypad indicative of key presses by a user for use in controlling the plunger drive.

40. The injector of claim 31, wherein the control circuit further comprises a digital interface for coupling the control circuit to an external system to allow remote monitoring and/or control of the injector.

41. A medical fluid injector comprising:

a mount that accepts a syringe;

a plunger drive for moving a plunger of the syringe forward and rearward inside the syringe, wherein the plunger drive comprises a motor, a drive ram, and a gear box for translating rotary motion generated by the motor to linear motion of the drive ram;

an electronic control circuit controlling the plunger drive, wherein the control circuit comprises a current sensor detecting an electrical current delivered to the motor, the control circuit responsive to the current sensor to identify a pressure generated within the syringe; and

a hall effect sensor located adjacent the mount and connected to the control circuit, wherein the hall effect sensor is configured to deliver a first signal to the control circuit indicative of a magnetic field, and the control circuit is configured to respond to the first signal by altering an operating function of the injector.

42. The injector of claim 41, wherein the control circuit controls the plunger drive to move the plunger in the syringe in accordance with a preprogrammed injection protocol.

43. The injector of claim 41, wherein the mount comprises a removable face plate.

44. The injector of claim 41, further comprising a second hall effect sensor connected to the control circuit for delivering a second signal to the control circuit indicative of a magnetic field, the control circuit responding to the first and second signals to alter operating functions of the injector.

45. The injector of claim 41, wherein the control circuit uses the first signal to compensate for a size of a syringe mounted to the injector when controlling the plunger drive.

46. The injector of claim 41, wherein the control circuit comprises a digital circuit and an analog to digital converter for converting analog signals from the current sensor to digital signals for use by the digital circuit in identifying a pressure generated within the syringe.

47. The injector of claim 41, wherein the control circuit comprises a digital circuit and a digital to analog converter for converting control signals generated by the digital circuit to analog signals for controlling the plunger drive.

48. The injector of claim 41, wherein the injector further comprises a keypad, and the control circuit comprises a keyboard interface for receiving signals from the keypad indicative of key presses by a user for use in controlling the plunger drive.

49. The injector of claim 41, wherein the control circuit further comprises a digital interface for coupling the control circuit to an external system to allow remote monitoring and/or control of the injector.

50. The injector of claim 45, wherein the control circuit responds to the first signal by altering an end of travel position to which the plunger drive will move the plunger inside the syringe.

51. The injector of claim 45, wherein the control circuit responds to the first signal by altering a syringe size.

52. The injector of claim 51, wherein the control circuit identifies the syringe size to an injector operator.
