1. An electronic card constructed to be read by a reading device, said electronic card comprising:

  • a card portion having a plurality of user interface elements on a surface; and

    an electronic apparatus on said card portion, said electronic apparatus comprising;

    a memory retaining data, wherein said retained data is associated with a corresponding one of said user interface elements;

    processor means coupled to said memory; and

    communication means for coupling said processor means to said reading device, wherein said processor means associates a selection of one of said user interface elements with said retained data and uses the association to perform a secure access checking function for enabling user access to a desired service,wherein said selection is provided by a substantially transparent touch sensitive membrane of said reading device arranged to overlap said electronic card, wherein said membrane is responsive to pressure applied anywhere on the membrane, and wherein respective positions of the user interface elements are independent of predetermined positions on the membrane.
