Abstract

A system for production of petroleum from an earth formation is provided. The system includes: at least one injection borehole for injecting a thermal source into the formation; at least one production borehole for recovering material including the petroleum from the formation; and at least one drainage borehole intersecting a portion of the at least one production borehole. Methods of recovering petroleum from an earth formation and creating a petroleum production system are also provided.

Claims

1. A system for production of petroleum from an earth formation, the system comprising:

at least one injection borehole for injecting a thermal source into the formation;

at least one production borehole for recovering material including the petroleum from the formation; and

a plurality of drainage boreholes separate from the at least one injection borehole, each of the plurality of drainage boreholes including a generally horizontal portion that intersects a portion of the at least one production borehole, the horizontal portions forming at least one of a vertical and an azimuthal array.

The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one injection borehole and the at least one production borehole extends substantially in a direction selected from at least one of vertical and azimuthal, and a portion of the at least one drainage borehole extends in a substantially horizontal direction.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one production borehole includes a device for pumping the petroleum to a surface location.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the device is selected from at least one of a gas lift and a pump.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the pump is an electric submersible pump.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one drainage borehole is a plurality of drainage boreholes intersecting the at least one production borehole at selected locations along a length of the at least one production borehole.

7. The system of claim 1, the production borehole has a first cross-sectional area, and the drainage borehole has a second cross-sectional area that is less than the first cross-sectional area.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the injection borehole does not intersect the drainage borehole and the production borehole.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the thermal source is steam.

10. A method of recovering petroleum from an earth formation, the method comprising:

disposing an injection assembly in at least one injection borehole, the injection assembly including an injector extending from a distal end of the assembly;

disposing a production assembly in at least one production borehole, the production assembly including a production conduit extending between a distal location of the production borehole and a proximal location of the production borehole, the production borehole being intersected by a plurality of drainage boreholes separate from the at least one injection borehole, each of the plurality of drainage boreholes having a horizontal portion that at least partially intersects the production borehole and forms at least one of a vertical and an azimuthal array;

injecting a first thermal source into the injector to introduce thermal energy to a portion of the earth formation and reduce a viscosity of the material therein; and

recovering the material through the production assembly.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising facilitating reduction of viscosity by increasing a thermal efficiency of the thermal source via the at least one drainage borehole.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising facilitating recovery of the material by at least one of inducing a flow of the material through the at least one drainage borehole into the at least one production borehole and exerting a pressure on the at least one production borehole.

13. The method of claim 10, further comprising injecting additional material into the at least one drainage borehole to facilitate recovery of the material through the at least one production borehole.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the additional material is selected from at least one of steam, a gas and a liquid.

15. The method of claim 10, further comprising injecting at least one monitoring device into the drainage borehole to monitor a characteristic of the material.

16. The method of claim 10, further comprising pumping the material through the production conduit via a pump.

17. A method of creating a petroleum production system, the method comprising:

selecting a location and path of at least one production borehole, the path extending in a direction selected from at least a vertical and an azimuthal direction;

drilling a plurality of drainage boreholes, each of the plurality of drainage boreholes having a horizontal portion that at least partially intersects the selected path, the horizontal portions forming at least one of a vertical and an azimuthal array;

drilling at least one production borehole along the selected path and at least partially intersecting the horizontal portion; and

drilling at least one injection borehole separate from the plurality of drainage boreholes for injecting a thermal source into the formation.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein drilling at least one drainage borehole includes drilling a plurality of drainage boreholes.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising disposing an injection assembly in the at least one injection borehole, and disposing a production assembly in the at least one production borehole.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the injection borehole is drilled along a path that does not intersect the drainage borehole and the production borehole.
