Abstract

A method of obtaining information for use in a smart antenna system is provided. The method includes monitoring an interface between a base station controller and a base station transceiver to receive signaling information being communicated via the interface. The method further includes extracting from the signaling information a subset of the signaling information operable to be used as input for selecting one or more of a plurality of beams for wireless communications.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving a random access (RACH) burst from a mobile station;

selecting a first beam based on the RACH burst;

communicating the RACH burst to a base station transceiver via the first beam;

receiving a first frame, the first frame comprising one or more traffic signals;

selecting a second beam based on the one or more traffic signals of the first frame; and

communicating the one or more traffic signals of the first frame to the base station transceiver.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein selecting the second beam comprises selecting the second beam using a smart decision beam selection.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein communicating the one or more traffic signals comprises:

receiving a second frame comprising one or more additional traffic signals;

selecting a third beam based on the one or more additional traffic signals;

determining that the second beam is adequate; and

responsive to determining the second beam is adequate, communicating the one or more traffic signals via the second beam.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising:

determining that the second beam is not adequate; and

responsive to determining the second beam is not adequate, communicating the one or more traffic signals via the third beam.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein selecting the third beam comprises selecting the third beam after the second beam was selected using a fast decision beam selection.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein determining the second beam is adequate comprises determining that a quality of the second beam meets a threshold.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the quality of the second beam is determined based on a quality factor threshold.

8. The method of claim 3, wherein selecting the third beam comprises selecting the third beam additionally based on the one or more traffic signals.

9. An apparatus, comprising:

means for receiving a random access (RACH) burst from a mobile station;

means for selecting a first beam based on the RACH burst;

means for communicating the RACH burst to a base station transceiver via the first beam;

means for receiving a first frame, the first frame comprising one or more traffic signals;

means for selecting a second beam based on the one or more traffic signals of the first frame; and

means for communicating the one or more traffic signals of the first frame to the base station transceiver.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the means for selecting the second beam comprises means for selecting the second beam using a smart decision beam selection.

11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the means for communicating the one or more traffic signals comprises:

means for receiving a second frame comprising one or more additional traffic signals;

means for selecting a third beam based on the one or more additional traffic signals;

means for determining that the second beam is adequate; and

means for communicating the one or more traffic signals via the second beam, responsive to determining the second beam is adequate.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the means for communicating the one or more traffic signals comprises:

means for determining that the second beam is not adequate; and

means for communicating the one or more traffic signals via the third beam, responsive to determining the second beam is not adequate.

13. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the means for selecting the third beam comprise means for selecting the third beam after the second beam was selected using a fast decision beam selection.

14. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the means for determining the second beam is adequate comprises means for determining that a quality of the second beam meets a threshold.

15. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the quality of the second beam is determined based on a quality factor threshold.

16. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the means for selecting the third beam comprises means for selecting the third beam additionally based on the one or more traffic signals.

17. A processing module, comprising:

a fast decision beam selection module, configured to make a fast beam selection based on a current signal in a current frame received via one or more beams, wherein the one or more beams communicatively couple a smart antenna apparatus and at least one mobile station;

a smart decision beam selection module, configured to make a smart beam selection based on the current signal in the current frame and a previous signal received in a previous frame received via the one or more beams; and

a fast/smart selection module, communicatively coupled to the fast decision beam selection module and the smart decision beam selection module, configured to make a fast/smart beam selection based on the fast decision beam selection and the smart decision beam selection, wherein the fast/smart beam selection is associated with a frequency used by a base station transceiver.

18. The processing module of claim 17, wherein the fast beam selection is further configured to be used when the current signal is a random access channel (RACH) signal.

19. The processing module of claim 17, wherein the processing module is further configured to be communicatively coupled to a host processor.

20. The processing module of claim 19, wherein the host processor is further configured to:

receive the fast/smart beam selection; and

select a transmitting beam selection or a receiving beam selection based on the fast/smart beam selection.

21. A method, comprising:

receiving and transmitting signals along a selected beam at a smart antenna circuit, the smart antenna circuit configured to be coupled to an already existing base station in a wireless communications system between a base station transceiver and at least one mobile station;

determining a number of parameters of the received and transmitted signals at a processing system of the smart antenna circuit; and

executing one or more algorithms, based on the number of parameters, to select an uplink beam for uplink signals and a downlink beam for downlink signals.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the uplink beam is configured to communicate signals from the at least one mobile station to the base station transceiver.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein the downlink beam is configured to communicate signals from the base station transceiver to the at least one mobile station.

24. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

determining a fast beam selection substantially in real time using a fast beam selection circuit; and

determining a smart beam selection using a smart beam selection circuit.

25. The method of claim 24, further comprising initiating a call from the mobile station using the fast beam selection.

26. The method of claim 21, further comprising collecting signaling information for making beam selections.

27. The method of claim 26, further comprising communicating the signaling information with the base station transceiver via an interface.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein collecting signaling information comprises collecting signaling information without substantially disrupting communication of the signaling information between the base station transceiver and the base station controller.

29. An apparatus, comprising:

means for receiving and transmitting signals along a selected beam, wherein the means for receiving and transmitting signals configured to be coupled to an already existing base station in a wireless communications system between a base station transceiver and at least one mobile station;

means for determining a number of parameters of the received and transmitted signals; and

means for executing one or more algorithms, based on the number of parameters, to select an uplink beam for uplink signals and a downlink beam for downlink signals.

30. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the uplink beam is configured to communicate signals from the at least one mobile station to the base station transceiver.

31. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the downlink beam is configured to communicate signals from the base station transceiver to the at least one mobile station.

32. The apparatus of claim 29, further comprising:

means for determining a fast beam selection substantially in real time; and

means for determining a smart beam selection.

33. The apparatus of claim 32, further comprising means for initiating a call from the mobile station using the fast beam selection.

34. The apparatus of claim 29, further comprising means for collecting signaling information for making beam selections.

35. The apparatus of claim 34, further comprising means for communicating the signaling information with the base station transceiver via an interface.

36. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the means for collecting signaling information comprises means for collecting signaling information without substantially disrupting communication of the signaling information between the base station transceiver and the base station controller.

37. A method, comprising:

receiving signaling information communicated between a base station transceiver and a base station controller; and

processing the signaling information to determine relevant signaling information.

38. The method of claim 37, further comprising using the relevant signaling information to select an uplink beam, a downlink beam, or combination thereof.

39. The method of claim 37, further comprising communicating control channel information using the base station transceiver, the base station controller, one or more mobile stations, or combinations thereof.

40. The method of claim 39, further comprising passively monitoring the control channel information communicated from the base station transceiver to the one or more mobile stations without modifying the base station transceiver.

41. The method of claim 37, further comprising communicating signals between a smart antenna circuit and a first mobile station using a narrow beam or a wide beam.

42. The method of claim 41, further comprising switching between a first narrow beam and a second narrow beam;

and

wherein communicating signals between the smart antenna circuit and the first mobile station using the narrow beam or the wide beam comprises communicating signals between the smart antenna circuit and the first mobile station using the first narrow beam, the second narrow beam, or the wide beam.

43. The method of claim 42, wherein switching between a first narrow beam and a second narrow beam comprises enabling the smart antenna circuit to locate a second mobile station within the wide beam.

44. An apparatus, comprising:

means for receiving signaling information communicated between a base station transceiver and a base station controller; and

means for processing the signaling information to determine relevant signaling information.

45. The apparatus of claim 44, further comprising means for using the relevant signaling information to select an uplink beam, a downlink beam, or combination thereof.

46. The apparatus of claim 44, further comprising means for communicating control channel information using the base station transceiver, the base station controller, one or more mobile stations, or combinations thereof.

47. The apparatus of claim 46, further comprising means for passively monitoring the control channel information communicated from the base station transceiver to the one or more mobile stations without modifying the base station transceiver.

48. The apparatus of claim 44, further comprising means for communicating signals with a first mobile station using a narrow beam or a wide beam.

49. The apparatus of claim 48, further comprising means for switching between a first narrow beam and a second narrow beam;

and

wherein the means for communicating signals with the first mobile station using the narrow beam or the wide beam comprises means for communicating signals with the first mobile station using the first narrow beam, the second narrow beam, or the wide beam.

50. The apparatus of claim 49, wherein the means for switching between the first narrow beam and the second narrow beam comprises means for locating a second mobile station within the wide beam.
