Abstract

An implantable medical device, such as an implantable pulse generator (IPG) used with a spinal cord stimulation (SCS) system, includes a rechargeable lithium-ion battery having an anode electrode with a substrate made substantially from titanium. Such battery construction allows the rechargeable battery to be discharged down to zero volts without damage to the battery. The implantable medical device includes battery charging and protection circuitry that controls the charging of the battery so as to assure its reliable and safe operation.

Claims

1. An implantable medical device, comprising:

a rechargeable battery;

a coil for wirelessly receiving radiation from an external charger for recharging the rechargeable battery;

a rectifier coupled to the coil for producing a DC voltage;

circuitry for receiving the DC voltage and for protecting and controlling the recharging of the rechargeable battery;

wherein the rechargeable battery comprises;

a first substrate comprising titanium;

an anode on the first substrate;

a second substrate;

a cathode on the second substrate consisting of lithium-nickel-cobalt oxide; and

an electrolyte and separator layer between the anode and the cathode.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the anode comprises graphite.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the second substrate comprises aluminum.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the rechargeable battery comprises a lithium-ion battery.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the rechargeable battery comprises a lithium-ion polymer battery.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the rechargeable battery permits a battery discharge to zero Volts without damage to the battery.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the rechargeable battery permits a battery discharge to less than about 1 Volts without damage the recharge performance of the battery.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the rechargeable battery permits a battery discharge to less than about 0 Volts without damage the recharge performance of the battery.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the circuitry for receiving the DC voltage and for protecting and controlling the charging of the rechargeable battery comprises charge controller circuitry for receiving the DC voltage and protection circuitry between the controller circuitry and the battery.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte and separator layer comprises a ceramic separator.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the electrolyte and separator layer comprises a solid polymer conductor electrolyte.
