Abstract

Methods and devices for rapid diagnosis and monitoring a patient for disease or effectiveness of treatment in real time. In preferred embodiments, the methods and devices comprise contacting an array of sensors with a sample from a mammal suspected of having a disease to generate a sensor array profile, measuring a clinical diagnostic marker for the suspected disease, and then developing a diagnosis using the sensor array profile in combination with the clinical diagnostic marker.

Claims

1. A method of determining a physiological condition in a mammal, said method comprising the steps of:

placing an array of sensors in contact with a sample from a mammal suspected of having a physiological condition to generate a sensor array response profile;

identifying the sensor array response profile in order to determine whether there exists a clinical diagnostic marker for the physiological condition; and

receiving, by a data processor, the sensor array response profile output by the array of sensors and an output of the identifying step, and developing a diagnosis using said sensor array response profile in combination with the output of the identifying step, thereby detecting whether or not there exists the physiological condition,

wherein the array of sensors includes a chemical sensor electrically coupled to first and second conductive leads, and

wherein the sensor array response profile is generated by the steps of;

a) measuring a first response between the first and second conductive leads when the chemical sensor is contacted with a first marker gas at a first concentration; and

b) measuring a second response between the first and second conductive leads when the chemical sensor is contacted with the first marker gas at a second concentration different from the first concentration; and

c) generating the sensor array response profile based on the first and second responses.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second responses are measured by changes in magnetic or optical characteristics.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

separating, by a y-connector, inhaled gas of the mammal and exhaled gas of the mammal; and

moving, by a pump, the exhaled gas towards the array of sensors.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

recording a temporal response of each of the sensors making up the array of sensors; and

normalizing the temporal response of each of the sensors making up the array of sensors to a maximum percent increase and percent decrease.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

transmitting the sensor array response profile and the clinical diagnostic marker over a communications network to a separate location at which the diagnosis is developed.

4. A system for determining a physiological condition in a mammal, said system comprising:

an array of sensors placed in contact with a sample from a mammal suspected of having a physiological condition to generate a sensor array response profile;

a data processor that receives the sensor array response profile and that determines whether or not there exists a clinical diagnostic marker for the physiological condition; and

wherein the data processor develops, based on the sensor array response profile output by the array of sensors and the determination by the data processor as to whether or not the clinical diagnostic marker exists, a diagnosis, thereby detecting whether or not there exists the physiological condition in the mammal; and

a measuring device that measures the sensor array response profile from sensor signals output by the array of sensors,

wherein the array of sensors includes a chemical sensor electrically coupled to first and second conductive leads, and

wherein the measuring device;

measures a first response between the first and second conductive leads when the chemical sensor is contacted with a first marker gas at a first concentration; and

measures a second response between the first and second conductive leads when the chemical sensor is contacted with the first marker gas at a second concentration different from the first concentration.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the first and second responses are measured by changes in magnetic or optical characteristics.

6. The system of claim 4, further comprising:

a y-connector that separates inhaled gas of the mammal and exhaled gas of the mammal; and

a pump that moves the exhaled gas towards the array of sensors.

9. The system of claim 4, further comprising:

a recording device for recording a temporal response of each of the sensors making up the array of sensors; and

a normalizing device for normalizing the temporal response of each of the sensors making up the array of sensors to a maximum percent increase and percent decrease.

10. The system of claim 4, further comprising:

a transmitting device for transmitting the sensor array response profile and the clinical diagnostic marker over a communications network to a separate location at which the diagnosis is developed.
