1. A method of controlling transmitted power in a wireless communication system, the method comprising:

  • determining a velocity ity of a wireless communication device in relation to a device located in a wireless network infrastructure;

    measuring a power level of a signal of the wireless communication system received over a wireless channel between the wireless communication device and the device located in the wireless network infrastructure;

    determining adjustments to a transmit power level at which the signal of the wireless communication system is transmitted in accordance with the determined velocity of the wireless communication device;

    selecting between a first power control loop update frequency if the determined velocity satisfies a first predetermined criteria and a second power control loop update frequency if the determined velocity satisfies a second predetermined criteria, wherein the first predetermined criteria is that the velocity is equal to or less than a first velocity, and the second predetermined criteria is that the velocity is equal to or greater than a second velocity, and wherein the first power control loop update frequency is greater than the second power control loop update frequency; and

    providing the adjustments and the selected one of first and second power control loop update frequencies to a transmitter of the signal.
