12. A method for compressing a video signal, comprising:
-
sending video compression parameters from an operator console to a camera system, wherein the operator console is adapted to control the camera system; receiving the parameters by a system control processor of the camera system; configuring at least one video compression device of the camera system in relation to the parameters; compressing an available video signal by operation of the system control processor with the at least one video compression device, with the at least one video compression device being configured in relation to the parameters, to produce compressed video, the compressed video having a compression ratio; and providing to a communications channel the compressed video, the communications channel having a communications channel capacity, the communications channel capacity being subject to a dynamic channel communications capacity limitation, the compressed video being provided to the communications channel without exceeding the dynamic channel communications capacity limitation, the compressed video being provided to the communications channel without reduction of the compression ratio.

13. A network, comprising:
-
a camera system, comprising; a camera that produces a video; a video compressor that compresses the video, the video compressor providing compressed video, the compressed video having a compression ratio; a system control processor that passes the compressed video; a network interface that receives the compressed video, the network interface being configured to provide to the network the compressed video, the network having a dynamic bandwidth limitation, the system compressor being configured to provide via the network interface to the network the compressed video at a bandwidth, the compressed video bandwidth at least meeting the dynamic bandwidth limitation without reduction of the compression ratio; a server; and an operator console that controls the camera system, wherein the console uses the server as an intermediary when requesting the compressed video signal. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16, 17)

18. A method for compressing a video stream, comprising:
-
receiving high-bitrate video streams at an operator console from a camera via a channel that does not have sufficient capacity to transmit the high-bitrate streams; automatically switching the camera to an alternate stream type and providing the camera with video compression parameters such that the video streams produced by the camera without reducing compression ratio of the video streams will not exceed a capacity of a communications channel used to transfer the video streams; and automatically switching the camera back to an original high-bitrate stream after the alternate stream type is received.

19. A computer readable medium comprising computer program instructions for:
-
receiving a video stream request at a first server; routing the video stream request to a second server that has a-priori knowledge of a capacity of a low-bandwidth communications channel; and automatically switching a camera that produces a video stream to an alternate stream type and providing the camera with video compression parameters such that the video stream produced based on the request will not exceed the capacity of the communications channel while maintaining at least a minimum compression ratio of the video stream.

20. A system, comprising:
-
a camera system; a surveillance network that has sufficient bandwidth to support a full 30 frame-per-second compressed video stream, the compressed video stream having a compression ratio; a server that receives the compressed video stream; and an operator console that places a request to the server for a compressed video stream from the camera system, wherein the server has knowledge of a capacity of the system, and based on that knowledge, begins forwarding selected frames of the video stream to the operator console without reducing compression ratio of the compressed video stream. - View Dependent Claims (21, 22)
