1. An accident avoidance system for a host vehicle, comprising:
- a global positioning system residing on the host vehicle for determining the host vehicle'"'"'s location as the host vehicle travels based on signals received from one or more satellites;
a navigation system residing on the host vehicle coupled to the global positioning system;
the navigation system including a display and being operative to display images on the display to an occupant of the host vehicle representing a vicinity associated with the host vehicle;
wherein the navigation system is further operative to update the images shown on the navigation system display to reflect changes in the location of the host vehicle;
a database arranged onboard the vehicle and including data about roadways that a vehicle can travel on, the data including location of edges of the roadways, wherein the navigation system is further operative to display on the display a map of the vicinity of the host vehicle based in part on information from the database,wherein the map of the vicinity of the host vehicle being displayed on the display shows a shape of the roadway or edges of the roadway,a processor residing on the host vehicle and coupled to the positioning system, the processor being operative to determine, based on data about defined travel corridors, that the host vehicle has deviated from a particular travel corridor on which it was travelling and activate an alarm in response to determining that the host vehicle has deviated from that travel corridor.

Accident avoidance system for a host vehicle includes a global positioning system residing on the host vehicle for determining the host vehicle'"'"'s location as the host vehicle travels, a communication system residing on the host vehicle operative to receive signals including information received directly from other vehicles indicating the locations thereof and traffic information received from an infrastructure-based station indicating the locations of other vehicles, and a navigation system residing on the host vehicle coupled to the global positioning system and the communication system. The navigation system displays images representing a vicinity associated with the host vehicle and showing indications of the locations of the other vehicles within the vicinity derived from the information received directly from the other vehicles and the traffic information received from the infrastructure-based station to thereby reduce the likelihood of a collision occurring between the host vehicle and the other vehicles.

20. A method for avoiding accidents involving a host vehicle, comprising:

determining via a positioning system, the host vehicle'"'"'s location as the host vehicle travels based on signals received from one or more satellites; obtaining a database including data about roadways that a vehicle can travel on, the data including location of edges of the roadways; installing the database onboard the host vehicle; displaying images on a display visible to an occupant of the host vehicle representing a vicinity associated with the host vehicle; displaying on the display a map of the vicinity of the host vehicle based in part on information from the database, the map of the vicinity of the host vehicle being displayed on the display showing a shape of the roadway or edges of the roadway; providing a processor residing on the host vehicle; coupling the processor to the positioning system; determining using the processor, based on data about defined travel corridors, that the host vehicle has deviated from a particular travel corridor; and activating an alarm in response to determining that the host vehicle has deviated from that travel corridor. - View Dependent Claims (21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35)

36. A method for monitoring travel of vehicles, comprising:

obtaining a database including data about defined travel corridors that a vehicle can travel on, the data including location of edges of the travel corridors; determining using a processor, a defined travel corridor on which the vehicle is travelling or approaching; displaying on a display, a map of the travel corridor that the vehicle is approaching showing a shape of the travel corridor or edges of the travel corridor; determining a location of the vehicle with location determining equipment; displaying on the display, an indication of the location of the vehicle in association with the map of a vicinity of the vehicle including the travel corridor that the vehicle is approaching; determining using a processor and based on data about the defined travel corridor, that the vehicle has deviated from or is likely to deviate from that travel corridor; and activating an alarm in response to determining that the vehicle has deviated from or is likely to deviate from that travel corridor to thereby notify an operator of the vehicle of the deviation. - View Dependent Claims (37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52)
