1. A method in a computing system that uses the contents of an identification document to determine whether an individual is authorized to perform a transaction, the method comprising:

  • reading, by the computing system, contents of an identification document presented by an individual in connection with a transaction, wherein the identification document is encoded with machine-readable identification information of the individual;

    identifying, by the computing system, an issuer of the identification document based on an Issuer Identification Number that is contained in the read contents;

    parsing, by the computing system, at least one portion of the read contents into one or more identification segments based on a known format of the identified issuer;

    determining, by the computing system, whether the individual is authorized to perform a transaction by applying a criterion to at least one parsed identification segment; and

    providing, by the computing system, an indication of whether the individual is authorized to perform the transaction.
