Abstract

A medical sensor may be adapted to account for factors that cause irregularities in pulse oximetry measurements or other spectrophotemetric measurements. Sensors are provided with surface features that reduce the amount of outside light or shunted light that impinge the detecting elements of the sensor. The sensor is adapted to reduce the effect of outside light or shunted light on pulse oximetry measurements.

Claims

1. A sensor comprising:

a sensor body;

an emitter disposed on the sensor body, wherein the emitter is adapted to transmit light into tissue;

a detector disposed on the sensor body, wherein the detector is adapted to detect the light; and

a patterned region disposed on a tissue-contacting surface of the sensor body, the patterned region being configured to absorb, redirect, or diffract the light such that an incidence of shunted light reaching the detector is reduced, wherein the patterned region protrudes less than about 0.001 mm from the tissue-contacting surface of the sensor body.

2. The sensor, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the patterned region comprises a light absorbing material alternating with a material from which the sensor body is formed.

3. The sensor, as set forth in claim 2, wherein the light absorbing material is adapted to absorb light at a wavelength emitted by the emitter.

4. The sensor, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the patterned region is disposed on at least 10 % of the tissue-contacting surface of the sensor body.

5. The sensor, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the sensor comprises at least one of a pulse oximetry sensor or a sensor for measuring a water fraction.

6. The sensor, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the patterned region comprises a light diffracting material adapted to diffract impinging light emitted by the emitter into destructively interfering beams.

7. The sensor, as set forth in claim 6, wherein the light diffracting material comprises an interference grating material.

8. The sensor, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the patterned region comprises an ink or dye.

9. The sensor, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the patterned region is disposed along at least one outside edge of the sensor body.

10. The sensor, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the patterned region comprises an irregular pattern.

11. The sensor, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the patterned region comprises a checker board pattern.

12. The sensor, as set forth in claim 1, wherein the patterned region comprises a material applied in varying intensity or concentration to the sensor body.

13. A pulse oximetry system comprising:

a pulse oximetry monitor; and

a pulse oximetry sensor adapted to be operatively coupled to the monitor, the sensor comprising;

a sensor body;

an emitter disposed on the sensor body, wherein the emitter is adapted to transmit light into tissue;

a detector disposed on the sensor body, wherein the detector is adapted to detect the light; and

a patterned region disposed on a tissue-contacting surface of the sensor body, the patterned region being configured to absorb, redirect, or diffract the light such that an incidence of shunted light reaching the detector is reduced, wherein the patterned region protrudes less than about 0.001 mm from the tissue-contacting surface of the sensor body.

14. The system, as set forth in claim 13, wherein the sensor comprises a sensor for measuring a water fraction.

15. A method comprising:

using a sensor;

delivering a first light through a patient'"'"'s tissue;

detecting the first light delivered through the tissue; and

redirecting a second light that does not propagate through the tissue away from the detector using a patterned region on the sensor that is microscopic in scale.

16. The method, as set forth in claim 15, wherein redirecting the second light comprises refracting the second light.

17. A method of manufacturing a sensor, the method comprising:

providing a sensor body having a patterned region on a tissue-contacting surface of the sensor body, the patterned region being configured to absorb, redirect, or diffract light such that an incidence of shunted light reaching a detector is reduced, wherein the patterned region protrudes less than about 0.001 mm from the tissue-contacting surface of the sensor body;

providing an emitter adapted to transmit the light into tissue;

providing the detector adapted to detect the light; and

assembling the emitter and the detector with the sensor body to form the sensor.

18. The method, as set forth in claim 17, wherein the patterned region is microscopic in scale.

19. A sensor comprising:

a sensor body;

an emitter disposed on the sensor body, wherein the emitter is adapted to transmit a light into tissue;

a detector disposed on the sensor body, wherein the detector is adapted to detect the light; and

a light diffracting material disposed on a tissue-contacting surface of the sensor body, wherein the light diffracting material is adapted to diffract impinging light emitted by the emitter into destructively interfering beams.

20. The sensor, as set forth in claim 19, wherein the light diffracting material comprises an interference grating material.
