Abstract

A touch switch apparatus for detecting the presence of an object such as a human appendage, the apparatus having a touch pad, an electric field generated about the touch pad and also having a preferably integrated and local control circuit connected to the touch pad and to a controlled device. Practical applications for touch switch apparatus, including use of touch switch apparatus in connection with other structure to emulate mechanical switches.

Claims

1. An apparatus emulating a mechanical switch, comprising:

a substrate;

a first field effect sensor disposed on said substrate;

a shaft penetrating and adapted to slide with respect to said substrate; and

a first electric field stimulator operably associated with said shaft, wherein said first electric field stimulator is movable along a predetermined path, said predetermined path having at least a first point relatively near to said first field effect sensor and at least a second point relatively far from said first field effect sensor,

in response to sliding of said shaft with respect to said substrate.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:

a second substrate;

a second field effect sensor disposed on said second substrate;

a second electric field stimulator operably associated with said shaft, wherein said second electric field stimulator is movable along a second predetermined path, said second predetermined path having at least a third point relatively near to said second field effect sensor and at least a fourth point relatively far from said second field effect sensor.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said shaft further is adapted to rotate with respect to said substrate and wherein said first electric field stimulator is movable in response to rotation of said shaft with respect to said substrate.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 further comprising:

a second substrate;

a second field effect sensor disposed on said second substrate;

a second electric field stimulator operably associated with said shaft, wherein said second electric field stimulator is movable along a second predetermined path, said second predetermined path having at least a third point relatively near to said second field effect sensor and at least a fourth point relatively far from said second field effect sensor.

The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a second field effect sensor disposed on said substrate, wherein said first electric field stimulator is movable along a predetermined path, said predetermined path having at least a third point relatively near to said second field effect sensor and at least a fourth point relatively far from said second field effect sensor.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said first and second field effect sensors are adapted for simultaneous actuation in response to sliding of said shaft.

7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said first and second field effect sensors are adapted for sequential actuation in response to sliding of said shaft.

8. An apparatus emulating a mechanical switch, comprising:

a substrate;

a first field effect sensor disposed on said substrate;

a shaft penetrating and adapted to rotate with respect to said substrate; and

a first electric field stimulator operably associated with said shaft, wherein said first electric field stimulator is movable along a predetermined path, said predetermined path having at least a first point relatively near to said first field effect sensor and at least a second point relatively far from said first field effect sensor,

in response to rotation of said shaft with respect to said substrate.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the distance, substantially perpendicular to said substrate, between said first field effect sensor and said first electric field stimulator varies with rotation of said shaft.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 further comprising:

a second substrate;

a second field effect sensor disposed on said second substrate;

a second electric field stimulator operably associated with said shaft, wherein said second electric field stimulator is movable along a second predetermined path, said second predetermined path having at least a third point relatively near to said second field effect sensor and at least a forth point relatively far from said second field effect sensor.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said shaft moves linearly with respect to said substrate in response to rotation of said shaft.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said field effect stimulator is disposed on a carrier coupled to said shaft.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 further comprising:

a second field effect sensor disposed on said substrate; and

a second electric field stimulator operably associated with said shaft, wherein said second electric field stimulator is movable along a second predetermined path, said second predetermined path having at least a third point relatively near to said second field effect sensor and at least a fourth point relatively far from said second field effect sensor.

14. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said electric field stimulator extends from said shaft.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said electric field stimulator has a cross section that varies with distance from said shaft.

16. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said electric field stimulator has a width and thickness, at least one of said width and thickness varying with distance from said shaft.

17. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein said electric field stimulator has a cross section that tapers with distance from said shaft.

18. The apparatus of claim 8 further comprising a light source, wherein a first end of said shaft penetrates a surface of said substrate, said light source is in optical communication with said first end of said shaft, and said shaft is adapted to transmit said light through at least a portion thereof.

19. An apparatus emulating a mechanical switch, comprising:

a substrate;

a first field effect sensor disposed on said substrate;

a shaft penetrating and adapted to pivot with respect to said substrate; and

a first electric field stimulator operably associated with said shaft, wherein said first electric field stimulator is movable along a predetermined path, said predetermined path having at least a first point relatively near to said first field effect sensor and at least a second point relatively far from said first field effect sensor, in response to pivoting of said shaft with respect to said substrate.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 further comprising a second field effect sensor disposed on said substrate, wherein said first electric field stimulator is movable along a predetermined path, said predetermined path having at least a third point relatively near to said second field effect sensor and at least a fourth point relatively far from said second field effect sensor.

21. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein said shaft is pivotable in two or more planes.

22. An apparatus emulating a mechanical switch, comprising:

a substrate;

a first field effect sensor disposed on said substrate;

a shaft engaged with said substrate;

a first electric field stimulator operably associated with said shaft, wherein said first electric field stimulator is movable along a predetermined path, said predetermined path having at least a first point relatively near to said first field effect sensor and at least a second point relatively far from said first field effect sensor;

a second field effect sensor disposed on said substrate;

a second shaft extending from said substrate and in pivotable engagement with said substrate; and

a second electric field stimulator operably associated with said second shaft, wherein said second electric field stimulator is movable along a second predetermined path, said second predetermined path having at least a third point relatively near to said second field effect sensor and at least a fourth point relatively far from said first field effect sensor;

wherein said shaft extends from said substrate and is in pivotable engagement with said substrate, and wherein said first electric field stimulator moves with respect to said first field effect sensor in response to pivoting of said shaft with respect to said substrate.

23. The apparatus of claim 22 further comprising means for latching said first shaft in a first position wherein said first electric field stimulator is relatively near to said first field effect sensor and/or a second position wherein said first electric field stimulator is relatively far from te said first field effect sensor.

24. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein said second shaft is coupled to said first shaft proximate said substrate.

25. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein said first shaft is flexible and extends from said substrate and wherein said first electric field stimulator moves with respect to said first field effect sensor in response to flexing of said first shaft.

26. An apparatus emulating a mechanical switch, comprising:

a substrate;

a first field effect sensor disposed on said substrate;

a shaft extending from said substrate;

a first knob disposed about said shaft;

a first electric field stimulator associated said knob, wherein said first electric field stimulator is movable along a predetermined path in response to rotation of said first knob, said predetermined path having at least a first point relatively near to said first field effect sensor and at least a second point relatively far from said first field effect sensor;

a second field effect sensor disposed on said substrate;

a second knob disposed about said first knob; and

a second electric field stimulator disposed on said second knob;

wherein said second electric field stimulator is movable along a second predetermined path in response to rotation of said second knob, said second predetermined path having at least a third point relatively near to said second field effect sensor and at least a second point relatively far from said second field effect sensor.

27. The apparatus of claim 26 wherein at least one of said first electric field stimulator and said second electric field stimulator comprises a conductive mass embedded in a ring, said ring associated with said knob.

28. The apparatus of claim 26 wherein at least one of said first electric field stimulator and said second electric field stimulator comprises a bump extending axially from a ring, said ring associated with said knob.

29. An apparatus emulating a mechanical switch, comprising:

a substrate;

a first field effect sensor disposed on said substrate;

a shaft engaged with said substrate; and

a first electric field stimulator operably associated with said shaft, wherein said first electric field stimulator is movable along a predetermined path, said predetermined path having at least a first point relatively near to said first field effect sensor and at least a second point relatively far from said first field effect sensor;

a second field effect sensor,

a first resistor coupled in series between a first terminal of said first field effect sensor and a first terminal of said second field effect sensor;

a detection circuit coupled in series between a second terminal of said first field effect sensor and a second terminal of said second field effect sensor;

a third field effect sensor; and

a second resistor coupled in series between said second terminal of said second field effect sensor and a first terminal of said third field effect sensor;

wherein said detection circuit is coupled in series between said second terminal of said first field effect sensor and a second terminal of said third field effect sensor.
