Abstract

A dielectric waveguide integrated plasma lamp (DWIPL) with a body comprising at least one dielectric material having a dielectric constant greater than approximately 2, and having a shape and dimensions such that the body resonates in at least one resonant mode when microwave energy of an appropriate frequency is coupled into the body. A dielectric bulb within a lamp chamber in the body contains a fill which when receiving energy from the resonating body forms a light-emitting plasma. The bulb is transparent to visible light and infrared radiation emitted by the plasma. Radiative energy lost from the plasma is recycled by reflecting the radiation from thin-film, multi-layer coatings on bulb exterior surfaces and/or lamp chamber surfaces back into the bulb. The lamp further includes two- or three-microwave probe configurations minimizing power reflected from the body back to the microwave source when the source operates: (a) at a frequency such that the body resonates in a single mode; or (b) at one frequency such that the body resonates in a relatively higher mode before a plasma is formed, and at another frequency such that the body resonates in a relatively lower order mode after the plasma reaches steady state.

Claims

1. A plasma lamp comprising:

a power source configured to provide radio frequency (RF) power;

a lamp body comprising a dielectric material wherein a conductive material surrounds the dielectric material and the power is provided at a resonant frequency for the lamp body;

a feed to couple the RF power into the lamp body;

a bulb including a fill that forms a light-emitting plasma when at least a portion of the RF power is coupled from the lamp body to the bulb; and

a reflective surface spaced from the bulb and shaped to reflect light emitted by the bulb out of the plasma lamp.

2. The plasma lamp of claim 1, wherein the bulb is spaced from the reflective surface by an air gap.

3. The plasma lamp of claim 1, wherein the bulb is elongate and the spacing between the reflective surface and the bulb is greater than a diameter of the bulb.

4. The plasma lamp of claim 1, wherein the reflective surface is shaped to taper symmetrically along its length, and the bulb is elongate having a length less than the length of the reflective surface.

5. The plasma lamp of claim 1, wherein the reflective surface is shaped to taper symmetrically about an axis of rotational symmetry.

6. The plasma lamp of claim 5, wherein the bulb is elongate in shape with a length aligned with the axis of rotational symmetry.

7. The plasma lamp of claim 1, wherein the reflective surface is of a paraboloidal or an ellipsoidal shape.

8. The plasma lamp of claim 1, wherein the bulb includes a cylindrical transparent wall.

9. The plasma lamp of claim 1, wherein the bulb is elongate and the reflective surface is shaped to reflect light emitted from an elongate side of the bulb.

10. The plasma lamp of claim 1, wherein the reflective surface defines an opening through which light exists the plasma lamp.

11. The plasma lamp of claim 1, wherein the lamp body defines a chamber in which the bulb is positioned, the reflective surface being provided on the lamp body.

12. The plasma lamp of claim 1, wherein the reflective surface is provided by a coating including a first thin-film, multi-layer dielectric coating.

The plasma lamp of claim 12, wherein the first thin-film, multi-layer dielectric coating is configured to reflect the light emitted by the plasma, and a second thin-film, multi-layer dielectric coating on exterior surfaces of the bulb is configured to reflect heat emitted from the plasma back into the bulb.

14. The plasma lamp of claim 13, wherein the first thin-film, multi-layer dielectric coating is configured to reflect a first tailored spectral band and the second thin-film, multi-layer dielectric coating is configured to reflect a second tailored spectral band.

15. The plasma lamp of claim 1, further comprising collection optics, the reflective surface being shaped to reflect the light towards the collection optics.

The lamp of claim 15, wherein the bulb is an elongate bulb having an end portion and an elongate side, the collection optics comprises a partial-lens cover and an outer planar portion, the partial-lens cover to refract light emitted proximate the end portion of the bulb, and the reflective surface shaped to reflect light emitted from the elongate side towards the planar portion.

17. The plasma lamp of claim 1, wherein the bulb is supported on a pedestal.
