Abstract

A diabetes care management system for managing blood glucose levels associated with diabetes comprising a computing device and an insulin delivery device. The computing device generally includes (i) a memory comprising one or more optimal blood glucose values, one or more self care values of a patient, one or more measured blood glucose values, and one or more scaling factors for weighting the impact on a future blood glucose value and that are customizable to an individual patient to predict the effect on the blood glucose of self care actions performed by the individual patient; (ii) a microprocessor, in communication with the memory, programmed to (A) determine the one or more scaling factors from one or more physiological parameters including body mass, metabolism rate, fitness level or hepatic or peripheral insulin sensitivity, or combinations thereof, and (B) calculate a further value, the further value being based on the self care values, and on the one or more optimal blood glucose values, and on the one or more scaling factors; and (iii) a display configured to display information according to the further value; and (iv) a housing, wherein the memory and the microprocessor are housed within the housing, thereby providing a hand-held, readily transportable computing device. The insulin delivery device may deliver insulin in response to information associated with the further value.

Claims

1. A diabetes care management system for managing blood glucose levels associated with diabetes, comprising:

a memory configured to store a plurality of optimal blood glucose values at a plurality of times, (ii) a plurality of self care values of a patient at said times, (iii) a plurality of measured blood glucose values at said times, and (iv) a plurality of optimal self care values at said times;

a microprocessor, in communication with said memory, and programmed to (A) generate a plurality of scaling factors customized to said patient in response to changes in any one of said self care values or said measured blood glucose values occurring at any one of said times and (B) calculate a future blood glucose value based on (i) a plurality of differentials, one of said differentials calculated as one of said scaling factors multiplied by differences between one of said self care values and one of said optimal self care values, (ii) a sum of said differentials plus (iii) a difference between one of said measured blood glucose values and a corresponding one of said optimal blood glucose values; and

a housing, wherein said memory and said microprocessor are housed within said housing, thereby providing a hand-held, transportable computing device.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein said customization of said scaling factors occurs in further response to changes in one or more physiological parameters including hepatic or peripheral insulin sensitivity, body mass, metabolism rate, fitness level, or combinations thereof.

The system of claim 1, wherein (i) said optimal blood glucose values are further based on one or more exercise values and one or more optimal exercise values and (ii) said differentials are based on differences between said one or more exercise values and said one or more optimal exercise values.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein (i) said optimal blood glucose values are further based on one or more optimal carbohydrate intake values and (ii) said differentials are based on said one or more optimal carbohydrate intake values.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein said optimal carbohydrate intake values comprise grams of carbohydrates.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein (i) said optimal blood glucose values are further based on one or more insulin dose values and (ii) said differentials are based on said one or more insulin dose values.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein said insulin dose values comprise units of insulin.

8. The system of claim 1, further comprising an electronic data recording device including a glucose measurement device for measuring the measured blood glucose values, and from which the measured blood glucose values are stored in the memory.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a display configured to display information to instruct the patient to consider appropriate insulin dose action including injecting units of insulin, food intake actions including intake of grams of carbohydrates, or exercise actions including minutes of exercise or durations of exercise in 15 minute units, or combinations thereof.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein (i) said optimal blood glucose values are further based on one or more optimal insulin dose values and (ii) said differentials are based on said one or more optimal insulin dose values.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein (i) said optimal blood glucose values are further based on one or more food intake values and (ii) said differentials are based on said one or more food intake values.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein said food intake values comprise grams of carbohydrates.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the optimal self care values comprises at least one of an optimal food exchange parameter value expressed in grams of carbohydrates, an optimal insulin dose parameter value expressed in units of insulin, and an optimal exercise duration parameter value expressed in fifteen minute units of exercise.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein one gram of carbohydrate being expected to raise the blood glucose level of the patient by 4 mg/dL, one unit of said insulin being expected to lower the blood glucose level of the patient by 40 mg/dL, and fifteen minutes of exercise being expected to lower the blood glucose level of the patient by 5 mg/dL, or said combinations thereof.

15. A diabetes care management system for managing blood glucose levels associated with diabetes, comprising:

a memory configured to store a plurality of optimal blood glucose values of a patient at a plurality of times, (ii) a plurality of measured blood glucose values at said times, (iii) a plurality of carbohydrate intake values at said times, (iv) a plurality of optimal carbohydrate intake values at said times;

a microprocessor, in communication with said memory, and programmed to (A) generate a plurality of sensitivity factors customized to said patient in response to changes in any one of said carbohydrate intake values or said measured blood glucose values occurring at any one of said times and (B) calculate a future blood glucose value based on (i) a plurality of differentials, one of said differentials calculated as one of said sensitivity factors multiplied by differences between said carbohydrate intake values and one of said optimal carbohydrate intake values, (ii) a sum of said differentials plus (iii) a difference between one of said measured blood glucose values and a corresponding one of said optimal blood glucose values; and

a display configured to display information advising the patient to take insulin in response to said future blood glucose value.

The system of claim 15, wherein (i) said optimal blood glucose values are further based on one or more exercise values and one or more optimal exercise values and (ii) said differentials are based on differences between said one or more exercise values and said one or more optimal exercise values.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein said exercise values comprise durations of exercise in fifteen minute units.

The system of claim 15, wherein (i) said optimal blood glucose values are further based on one or more self care values and one or more optimal self care values and (ii) said differentials are based on differences between said one or more self care values and said one or more optimal self care values.

The system of claim 15, wherein (i) said optimal blood glucose values are further based on one or more insulin dose values and one or more optimal insulin dose values and (ii) said differentials are based on differences between said one or more insulin dose values and said one or more optimal insulin dose values.

The system of claim 15, wherein said display of said information instructs the patient to consider appropriate insulin dose action including injecting units of said insulin, food intake actions including intake of grams of carbohydrates, or exercise actions including minutes of exercise or durations of exercise in 15 minute units, or combinations thereof.

The system of claim 15, wherein (i) said optimal blood glucose values are further based on one or more food intake values and one or more optimal food intake values and (ii) said differentials are based on differences between said one or more food intake values and said one or more optimal food intake values.

The system of claim 15, wherein (i) said optimal blood glucose values are further base on one of one or more optimal self care values and (ii) said one or more optimal self care values include an optimal food exchange parameter value expressed in grams of carbohydrates, an optimal insulin dose parameter value expressed in units of said insulin, and an optimal exercise duration parameter value expressed in fifteen minute units of exercise.

The system of claim 22, wherein one gram of carbohydrate being expected to raise the blood glucose level of the patient by 4 mg/dL, one unit of said insulin being expected to lower the blood glucose level of the patient by 40 mg/dL, and fifteen minutes of exercise being expected to lower the blood glucose level of the patient by 5 mg/dL, or said combinations thereof.
