1. A method of interpreting handwritten data inputted on a printed form using an optically imaging pen, said form having a plurality of different form fields for said handwritten data input, said form including a plurality of printed tags, each printed tag identifying a respective location on the form and a form identity,said method comprising the steps of:

  • (a) writing in at least one of said form fields of the printed form using the optically imaging pen;

    (b) optically imaging a plurality of printed tags on the printed form during handwritten input in said form field;

    (c) determining, in the pen using the imaged tags, that the pen is positioned within said form field, wherein an extent of said form field is determined by the pen using a subset of the printed tags contained within said form field;

    (d) generating, in the pen using the imaged tags, digital ink representing handwritten data input of the pen in said form field;

    (e) identifying, using the digital ink and a description of the form stored in a computer system, the form field in which handwritten data has been inputted;

    (f) identifying, in the computer system, a set of predetermined text values associated with the identified form field; and

    (g) interpreting the handwritten data by decoding the digital ink and converting the decoded digital ink into computer text,wherein the computer text is selected only from the set of predetermined text values identified in step (f).
