Abstract

A gaming system including a central server linked to a plurality of gaming machines, gaming tables, hand held gaming devices and/or community gaming displays. The central server monitors wagers placed on any games played. Based at least in part on the wagers placed, the central server determines when one or more bonus events will occur and which players to provide any bonus awards.

Claims

1. A gaming system comprising:

a plurality of gaming devices including;

(i) a first gaming device including at least one display device configured to operate to display a first wagering game upon a placement of a first wager, wherein said first wagering game has a first average expected wagering game payback percentage; and

(ii) a second gaming device including at least one display device configured to operate to display a second wagering game upon a placement of a second wager, wherein said second wagering game has a second, different average expected wagering game payback percentage; and

a controller configured to communicate with said gaming devices, the controller programmed to;

(a) maintain an accumulated wager pool during a bonus event accumulation period, said accumulated wager pool at least including;

(i) a first gaming device accumulated wager pool amount, said first gaming device accumulated wager pool amount based on;

(1) the first average expected wagering game payback percentage of the first wagering game of the first gaming device, and (2) any wager amount placed at the first gaming device, and

(ii) a different, second gaming device accumulated wager pool amount, said second gaming device accumulated wager pool amount based on;

(1) the second average expected wagering game payback percentage of the second wagering game of the second gaming device, and (2) any wager amount placed at the second gaming device;

(b) determine a bonus award based, at least in part, on the accumulated wager pool; and

(c) cause the determined bonus award to be displayed and provided to a player.

2. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein the controller is programmed to:

(a) for each gaming device, maintain a total of the wagers placed on the wagering games of said gaming devices during the bonus event accumulation period;

(b) maintain the accumulated wager pool including a total of the wagers placed on the wagering games of all of gaming devices during the bonus event accumulation period;

(c) determine at designated intervals during the bonus event accumulation period if a bonus event will occur; and

(d) if the bonus event is determined to occur;

(i) determine which of the gaming devices were in an active state during a bonus event qualification period for said bonus event, and

(ii) select at least one of the gaming devices in the active state to be the gaming device which will display and provide the bonus award.

The gaming system of claim 2, wherein the controller is programmed to select at least one of the gaming devices in the active state based on the total wagers placed during the bonus event accumulation period for each gaming device in the active state relative to a total of the wagers placed for all of said gaming devices in the active state during the bonus event accumulation period.

4. The gaming system of claim 2, wherein the designated intervals are time based.

5. The gaming system of claim 2, wherein the designated intervals are based on the accumulated wager pool.

The gaming system of claim 2, wherein the controller is programmed to determine which of the gaming devices were in the active state during the bonus event qualification period by determining for each gaming device if a wager was placed on the wagering game of that gaming device during the bonus event qualification period.

The gaming system of claim 2, wherein the controller is programmed to determine which of the gaming devices were in the active state during the bonus event qualification period by determining for each gaming device if a designated wager level was placed on the wagering game of that gaming device during the bonus event qualification period.

8. The gaming system of claim 2, wherein the controller is programmed to determine which of the gaming devices were in the active state during the bonus event qualification period by determining for each gaming device if a designated number of wagers were placed on the wagering game of that gaming device during the bonus event qualification period.

The gaming system of claim 2, wherein if at least two of the gaming devices are each in the active state active, the controller is programmed to select at least one of the gaming devices in the active state to provide a secondary bonus award, wherein said selection excludes the gaming device selected to provide the bonus award.

10. The gaming system of claim 2, wherein if at least two gaming devices are each in the active state, the controller is programmed to determine a number of gaming devices in the active state which will each provide a secondary bonus award.

11. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein the controller is programmed to determine part of the bonus award.

12. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein a gaming device processor for a selected gaming device determines at least part of an amount of the bonus award.

13. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein the bonus award includes a value component.

14. The gaming system of claim 13, wherein the value component is determined by a gaming device processor for a selected gaming device.

15. The gaming system of claim 13, wherein the value component is determined in a secondary game played on a selected gaming device.

16. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein the bonus award is a progressive award.

17. A gaming system comprising:

a plurality of gaming devices; and

a controller configured to communicate with said gaming devices, said controller programmed to;

(a) accumulate a bonus award pool, said accumulation based on any amounts wagered on any wagering games played at said gaming devices and an average expected wagering game payback percentage for each wagered on wagering game, wherein at least two of the gaming devices have different average expected wagering game payback percentages and a same amount wagered at two of said different gaming devices having different average expected wagering game payback percentages results in different amounts accumulated in the bonus award pool;

(b) cause a display of a bonus award based on the accumulated pool; and

(c) cause the displayed bonus award to be provided to at least one player.

18. The gaming system of claim 17, wherein the controller is programmed to:

(a) for each gaming device, maintain a total of the wagers placed on the wagering games of said gaming devices during the bonus event accumulation period;

(b) maintain the bonus award pool including a total of the wagers placed on the wagering games of all of gaming devices during the bonus event accumulation period;

(c) determine at designated intervals during the bonus event accumulation period if a bonus event will occur; and

(d) if the bonus event is determined to occur;

(i) determine which of the gaming devices were in an active state during a bonus event qualification period for said bonus event, and

(ii) select at least one of the gaming devices in the active state to be the gaming device which will display and provide the bonus award.

19. The gaming system of claim 18, wherein the controller is programmed to select at least one of the gaming devices in the active state based on the total wagers placed during the bonus event accumulation period for each gaming device in the active state relative to a total of the wagers placed for all of said gaming devices in the active state during the bonus event accumulation period.

20. The gaming system of claim 18, wherein the designated intervals are time based.

21. The gaming system of claim 18, wherein the designated intervals are based on the bonus award pool.

22. The gaming system of claim 18, wherein the controller is programmed to determine which of the gaming devices were in the active state during the bonus event qualification period by determining for each gaming device if a wager was placed on the wagering game of that gaming device during the bonus event qualification period.

23. The gaming system of claim 18, wherein the controller is programmed to determine which of the gaming devices were in the active state during the bonus event qualification period by determining for each gaming device if a designated wager level was placed on the wagering game of that gaming device during the bonus event qualification period.

24. The gaming system of claim 18, wherein the controller is programmed to determine which of the gaming devices were in the active state during the bonus event qualification period by determining for each gaming device if a designated number of wagers were placed on the wagering game of that gaming device during the bonus event qualification period.

25. The gaming system of claim 18, wherein if at least two of the gaming devices are each in the active state active, the controller is programmed to select at least one of the gaming devices in the active state to provide a secondary bonus award, wherein said selection excludes the gaming device selected to provide the bonus award.

26. The gaming system of claim 18, wherein if at least two gaming devices are each in the active state, the controller is programmed to determine a number of gaming devices in the active state which will each provide a secondary bonus award.

27. The gaming system of claim 17, wherein the controller is programmed to determine part of the bonus award.

28. The gaming system of claim 17, wherein a gaming device processor for a selected gaming device determines at least part of an amount of the bonus award.

29. The gaming system of claim 17, wherein the bonus award includes a value component.

30. The gaming system of claim 29, wherein the value component is determined by a gaming device processor for a selected gaming device.

31. The gaming system of claim 29, wherein the value component is determined in a secondary game played on a selected gaming device.

32. The gaming system of claim 17, wherein the bonus award is a progressive award.

33. A gaming system comprising:

a plurality of gaming devices including;

(i) a first gaming device including at least one display device configured to operate to display a first wagering game upon a placement of a first wager, wherein said first wagering game has a first average expected wagering game payback percentage; and

(ii) a second gaming device including at least one display device configured to operate to display a second wagering game upon a placement of a second wager, wherein said second wagering game has a second, different average expected wagering game payback percentage; and

a controller configured to communicate with said gaming devices, wherein the controller is programmed to determine if a bonus event will occur, and if the controller determines that the bonus event will occur, the controller is programmed to;

(a) determine a first probability of the first gaming device providing a bonus award, wherein said determination is based on;

(i) the first average expected wagering game payback percentage of the first wagering game of the first gaming device, and (ii) any wager amount placed at the first gaming device,

(b) determine a different, second probability of the second gaming device providing the bonus award, wherein said determination is based on;

(i) the second average expected wagering game payback percentage of the second wagering game of the second gaming device, and (ii) any wager amount placed at the second gaming device;

(c) select one of the gaming devices to provide the bonus award, wherein said selection is based, at least in part, on the determined first probability of the first gaming device providing the bonus award and the determined second probability of the second gaming device providing the bonus award; and

(d) cause the bonus award to be displayed and provided to a player of said selected gaming device.

34. The gaming system of claim 33, wherein the controller is programmed to determine part of the bonus award.

35. The gaming system of claim 33, wherein a gaming device processor for the selected gaming device determines at least part of an amount of the bonus award.

36. The gaming system of claim 33, wherein the bonus award includes a value component.

37. The gaming system of claim 36, wherein the value component is determined by a gaming device processor for the selected gaming device.

38. The gaming system of claim 36, wherein the value component is determined in a secondary game played on the selected gaming device.

39. The gaming system of claim 33, wherein the bonus award is a progressive award.

40. A gaming system comprising:

a plurality of gaming devices; and

a controller configured to communicate with said gaming devices, wherein the controller is programmed to determine if a bonus event will occur, and if the controller determines that the bonus event will occur, the controller is programmed to;

(a) determine each gaming device'"'"'s relative probability of providing a bonus award, said determination based on any amounts wagered on any wagering games played at said gaming devices and an average expected wagering game payback percentage for each wagered on wagering game, wherein at least two of the gaming devices have different average expected wagering game payback percentages and a same amount wagered at two of said different gaming devices having different average expected wagering game payback percentages results in different probabilities of providing the bonus award;

(b) select one of the gaming devices to provide the bonus award, wherein said selection is based, at least in part, on the determined relative probabilities; and

(c) cause the bonus award to be displayed and provided to a player of said selected gaming device.

41. The gaming system of claim 40, wherein the controller is programmed to determine part of the bonus award.

42. The gaming system of claim 40, wherein a gaming device processor for the selected gaming device determines at least part of an amount of the bonus award.

43. The gaming system of claim 40, wherein the bonus award includes a value component.

44. The gaming system of claim 43, wherein the value component is determined by a gaming device processor for the selected gaming device.

45. The gaming system of claim 43, wherein the value component is determined in a secondary game played on the selected gaming device.

46. The gaming system of claim 40, wherein the bonus award is a progressive award.
