Abstract

A lancet driver is provided wherein the driver exerts a driving force on a lancet during a lancing cycle and is used on a tissue site. The driver comprises of a drive force generator for advancing the lancet and a processor coupled to the drive force generator capable of changing the direction and magnitude of force exerted on the lancet during the lancing cycle. The driver further includes a human interface on the housing providing at least one output for communicating with the patient.

Claims

1. A method for actuating a bodily fluid extraction device, comprising:

providing a penetrating member device that includes at least one penetrating member, a tissue interface surface, and a sample reservoir as a single packaged unit;

pushing down on at least a portion of the tissue interface surface with a body surface; and

applying pressure on at least a portion of the tissue interface surface to push down and electrically actuate a driver to advance the penetrating member to pierce the body surface;

detecting thermally the presence of body fluid from the pierced body surface;

collecting the body fluid in the sample reservoir;

disposing the penetrating member device including the penetrating member, the tissue interface surface, and the sample reservoir as one integrated unit after analyzing the body fluid.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

compressing springs.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the tissue interface surface is spring biased by the compressing springs creating an urging back on a finger and an increase in pressure.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the increase in pressure increase a volume of bodily fluid expressed from a wound site at the finger.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein application of the pressure is application downward on at least a portion of the tissue interface surface.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein application of the pressure application urges a bodily fluid toward a target tissue site.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the tissue interface surface sequentially increases an area of contact of a finger.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the pressure is sequentially applied to the area of contact of the finger.

9. The method of claim 1, when as a user'"'"'s finger is urged downward the pressure is applied against the user'"'"'s finger across the tissue interface surface.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein as a user'"'"'s finger is further urged toward the contact surface, the area of contact and applied pressure increases due to compressing of springs.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the contact surface and applied pressure serves to urge bodily fluid to flow to a wound tract of a user'"'"'s finger.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the contact surface an applied pressure serve to promote subsequent expression of the bodily fluid from a target site on the user'"'"'s finger.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein body fluid from the wound site flows into a sample chamber.

14. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using a display to view selected parameters relative to the body fluid.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the tissue interface surface is moveable.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein application of pressure to the tissue interface surface enhances the flow of a body fluid from a wound site.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein spontaneous blood yield occurs and flows up a wound tract to a surface of the skin, where it can be collected and tested.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the tissue interface surface includes an ergonomically contoured surface.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the tissue interface surface is shaped to snugly fit a finger or other body portion.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the tissue interface surface is contoured.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the tissue interface surface includes a concave depression.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the tissue interface surface conforms to a shape of a user'"'"'s finger.
