Abstract

A dialysate regeneration chamber is provided. In one embodiment, the dialysate regeneration chamber may include a toxin trap configured to selectively trap toxins and repel select cations.

Claims

1. A system capable of removing wastes from blood, the system comprising:

a dialysis chamber comprising a dialysate compartment, a blood compartment, and a semi-permeable membrane disposed between the dialysate compartment and the blood compartment; and

a dialysate regeneration chamber comprising a dialysate regeneration fabric including an ion barrier and an immobilized urease, wherein the dialysate regeneration chamber is coupled to the dialysis chamber via a tubing system.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the dialysate regeneration chamber is configured to refresh spent dialysate from the dialysis chamber.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the dialysate regeneration chamber comprises ion-selective urease-immobilized activated carbon fibers.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is portable.

5. The system of claim 1, further comprising a dialysate reservoir.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the dialysate may be recirculated in a closed loop including the dialysate compartment and the dialysate regeneration chamber.

7. The system of claim 3, wherein the ion-selective urease-immobilized activated carbon fibers may be configured to trap uremic toxins.

8. The system of claim 2 for use for hemodialysis treatment.

9. The system of claim 1 for use for peritoneal dialysis treatment.

12. The system of claim 1, wherein the ion barrier is a plurality of hydrocarbon chains coupled to a surface of the dialysate regeneration fabric.

13. The system of claim 1, wherein the immobilized urease is coupled to the dialysate regeneration fabric via a linker.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the linker is an 8-aminocaprylic acid linker and/or a glutaraldehyde linker.

10. A system for removing wastes from blood, the system comprising:

a dialysis chamber comprising a dialysate compartment, a blood compartment, and a semi-permeable membrane disposed between the dialysate compartment and the blood compartment; and

a dialysate regeneration chamber comprising a dialysate regeneration fabric including an ion barrier and one or more ion selective activated carbon fibers, wherein the dialysate regeneration chamber is coupled to the dialysis chamber via a conduit.

15. The system of claim 10, wherein the ion barrier is a plurality of hydrocarbon chains coupled to a surface of the dialysate regeneration fabric.

16. The system of claim 10, further including an immobilized urease coupled to the dialysate regeneration fabric via a linker.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the linker is an 8-aminocaprylic acid linker and/or a glutaraldehyde linker.

18. The system of claim 10, wherein the one or more ion selective activated carbon fibers are ion selective urease-immobilized activated carbon fibers configured to trap uremic toxins.

19. The system of claim 10, further including an ion exchange resin to increase a negative charge along the dialysate regeneration fabric.

11. A system for removing wastes from blood, the system comprising:

a dialysis chamber comprising a dialysate compartment, a blood compartment, and a semi-permeable membrane disposed between the dialysate compartment and the blood compartment; and

a dialysate regeneration chamber comprising a dialysate regeneration fabric including a plurality of hydrocarbon moieties, one or more activated carbon fibers, an immobilized urease attached to the activated carbon fibers via a linker, and an ion exchange resin to increase a negative charge along the dialysate regeneration fabric, wherein the dialysate regeneration chamber is coupled to the dialysis chamber via a conduit.

20. The system of claim 11, wherein the linker is an 8-aminocaprylic acid linker and/or a glutaraldehyde linker.
