Abstract

Apparatus and a method for treating an irregularity in a wall of a vessel of a patient defined by an irregular or afflicted wall portion with adjacent normal wall portions comprises a catheter having a distal end portion for being guided through the vessel to the site of the irregularity. A balloon associated with said distal end portion of the catheter for selective inflating to contact the walls of the vessel urges a stent carried by the distal end portion of the catheter in a constricted condition for passage through the vessel into an expanded form with the stent spanning the afflicted wall portion and contacting the adjacent wall portions. The catheter is formed with lumens for inflating the balloon, for receiving a guidewire for guiding the catheter through the vessel, and for connecting a port in the catheter proximate the afflicted wall portion to enable delivery of a therapeutic agent into the vessel to contact the stent and the irregular wall portion.

Claims

1. A stent assembly for deployment within a patient'"'"'s body comprising:

a. a stent frame;

b. a therapeutic agent reservoir carried by said stent frame; and

c. a therapeutic agent delivery mechanism in fluid communication with said reservoir, said delivery mechanism enabling an addition of said therapeutic agent to said reservoir in vivo.

2. A stent assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein said stent frame comprises an expansible framework.

3. A stent assembly as recited in claim 2 wherein said therapeutic agent reservoir overlies said framework.

4. A stent assembly as recited in claim 3 wherein said therapeutic agent reservoir comprises a membrane.

5. A stent assembly as recited in claim 4 wherein said therapeutic agent delivery mechanism comprises a port formed in said membrane.

6. A stent assembly as recited in claim 5 wherein said therapeutic agent delivery mechanism comprises a plurality of ports formed in said membrane.

7. A stent assembly as recited in claim 4 wherein said membrane comprises a polymeric membrane.

8. A stent assembly as recited in claim 7 wherein said polymeric membrane is composed of a hydrophilic material.

9. A stent assembly as recited in claim 7 wherein said polymeric membrane is composed of a hydrophobic material.

10. A stent assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein said therapeutic agent reservoir overlies said stent frame.

11. A stent assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein said therapeutic agent reservoir includes a hydrophilic membrane supported by said stent frame.

12. A stent assembly as recited in claim 11 wherein said therapeutic agent delivery mechanism comprises a port formed in said membrane.

13. A therapeutic agent delivery system for replenishing a reservoir of a replenishable stent comprising:

an insertion catheter having a distal end, said insertion catheter comprising a tubular member;

an inflation balloon;

a port proximate the distal end of said insertion catheter;

a first lumen in said insertion catheter in fluid communication with said port;

a second lumen in said insertion catheter in fluid communication with said inflation balloon;

a therapeutic agent source in fluid communication with said first lumen; and

a replenishable stent comprising a reservoir;

wherein said port comprises a fitting corresponding to and mating with a fitting connected with the reservoir of the replenishable stent.

14. A system comprising:

a. an insertion device having a distal end;

b. a stent carried proximate the distal end of said insertion device in a compact condition for deployment in the body of a patient in an expanded condition, said stent comprising;

i. a frame defining the form of said stent, said frame having a plurality of apertures,

ii. a therapeutic agent reservoir, and

iii. a port communicating with said therapeutic agent reservoir;

c. a deployment mechanism carried by said insertion device for urging said stent from the compact condition to the expanded condition; and

d. a lumen connecting said port with a therapeutic agent source.
