1. A method for treating hyperlipidemia in a hyperlipidemic, the method comprising the step of:

  • dosing the hyperlipidemic once a day, in the evening or at night, with at least one sustained release solid oral dosage form comprising (i) about 375 mg of nicotinic acid;

    (ii) about 5% to about 50% by weight of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose;

    (iii) about 1% to about 5% by weight of povidone; and

    (iv) about 0.5% to about 2.0% by weight of stearic acid, wherein the hyperlipidemic'"'"'s total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and Lp(a) are reduced and the hyperlipidemic'"'"'s HDL cholesterol is increased, wherein the total amount of nicotinic acid dosed to a hyperlipidemic in a day is between about 1000 to about 3000 mgs.
