Abstract

A vacuum cleaner includes a dust collector that compresses dust stored inside a dust container to minimize the volume of the dust. The dust collector would include one or more pressing plates that are used to compress the dust stored in dust collector. Various methods are used to control movements of the movable pressing plates to facilitate the compression operations. Also, various methods are used to determine when the dust collector is full and needs to be emptied.

Claims

1. A method of operating a vacuum cleaner having a suction motor that generates a suction power, a dust container that stores dust, at least one plate provided in the dust container, and a drive device comprising at least one gear coupled to the at least one plate that drives the at least one plate, the method comprising:

driving the driving device in one of a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction to move the at least one plate in a first direction to compress dust in the dust container; and

driving the driving device in the other of the clockwise and counter-clockwise direction to move the at least one plate in a second opposite direction, wherein the at least one plate is connected to a rotating shaft that extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to a bottom surface of the dust container.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the driving device comprises an electric motor and a driving mechanism comprising the at least one gear configured to transfer a driving force of the electric motor to the rotating shaft.

3. The method according to claim 2, wherein the driving results in the at least one plate being moved in alternating directions.

4. The method according to claim 3, further comprising stopping the driving device to hold the at least one plate at a position in which it compresses dust for a predetermined period of time.

5. The method according to claim 3, further comprising:

sensing an amount of electrical current applied to the electric motor during movement of the at least one plate in the first direction; and

cutting power applied to the electric motor to stop the at least one plate when the sensed electrical current suddenly increases.

6. The method according to claim 5, wherein the cutting power comprises continuously applying pressure to the dust while the at least one plate is stopped.

7. The method according to claim 3, wherein the at least one plate rotates along with the rotating shaft.

8. The method according to claim 3, wherein the at least one plate comprises a movable plate and a fixed plate integrated with a casing of the dust container.

9. The method according to claim 3, wherein the electric motor is disposed adjacent a bottom wall of the dust container.

10. The method according to claim 3, wherein the rotating shaft is co-axial with a central longitudinal axis of a filter.

11. The method according to claim 1, wherein the at least one plate rotates along with the rotating shaft.

12. The method according to claim 1, wherein the at least one plate comprises a movable plate and a fixed plate integrated with a casing of the dust container.

13. The method according to claim 1, wherein the driving device comprises an electric motor disposed adjacent a bottom wall of the dust container.

14. The method according to claim 1, wherein the rotating shaft is co-axial with a central longitudinal axis of a filter.

15. A method of operating a vacuum cleaner having a suction motor that generates a suction power, a dust container that stores dust, at least one plate provided in the dust container, and a compression motor that drives the at least one plate, the method comprising:

moving the at least one plate in a first direction by operating the compression motor to compress dust stored in the dust container;

stopping operation of the compression motor when the at least one plate is forced to stop; and

moving the at least one plate in a second opposite direction by re-operating the compression motor.

16. The method according to claim 15, wherein the stopping comprises:

sensing an amount of electrical current applied to the compression motor during movement of the at least one plate in the first direction; and

cutting power applied to the compression motor to stop the at least one plate when the sensed electrical current suddenly increases.

17. The method according to claim 15, wherein the moving the at least one plate in the first direction comprises rotating the compression motor in one of a cloclwise and counter-clockwise direction and the moving the at least one plate in the second opposite direction comprises rotating the compression motor in the other of the clockwise and counter-clockise direction.

18. The method according to claim 17, wherein the at least one plate is connected to a rotating shaft that extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to a bottom surface of the dust container.

19. The method according to claim 18, wherein the at least one plate rotates along with the rotating shaft.

20. The method according to claim 18, wherein the rotating shaft is co-axial with a central longitudinal axis of a filter.

21. The method according to claim 17, wherein the at least one plate comprises a movable plate and a fixed plate integrated with a casing of the dust container.

22. The method according to claim 17, wherein the compression motor is disposed adjacent a bottom wall of the dust container.

23. The method according to claim 15, wherein the at least one plate is connected to a rotating shaft that extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to a bottom surface of the dust container.

24. The method according to claim 23, wherein the at least one plate rotates along with the rotating shaft.

25. The method according to claim 23, wherein the rotating shaft is co-axial with a central longitudinal axis of a filter.

26. The method according to claim 15, wherein the at least one plate is located in the dust container in a state in which the at least one plate compresses the dust in the dust container.

27. The method according to claim 15, wherein the at least one plate comprises a movable plate and a fixed plate integrated with a casing of the dust container.

28. The method according to claim 15, wherein the compression motor is disposed adjacent a bottom wall of the dust container.

29. A method of operating a vacuum cleaner having a suction motor that generates a suction power, a dust container that stores dust, at least one plate provided in the dust container, and a driving device comprising at least one gear coupled to the at least one plate that drives the at least one plate, the method comprising:

operating the suction motor of the vacuum cleaner;

halting operation of the suction motor;

moving the at least one plate in a first direction by operating the driving device to compress dust stored in the dust container after halting operation of the suction motor; and

moving the at least one plate in a second opposite direction by operating the driving device.

30. The method according to claim 29, wherein the at least one plate is located in the dust container in a state in which the at least one plate compresses the dust in the dust container.

31. The method according to claim 29, further comprising:

sensing an amount of electrical current applied to the driving device during movement of the at least one plate in the first direction; and

cutting power applied to the driving device to stop the at least one plate when the sensed electrical current suddenly increases.

32. The method according to claim 29, wherein the moving the at least one plate in the first direction comprises rotating the compression motor in one of a clockwise and counter-clockwise direction and the moving the at least one compression plate in the second opposite direction comprises rotating the compression motor in the other of the clockwise and counter-clockwise direction.

33. The method according to claim 32, wherein the at least one plate is connected to a rotating shaft that extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to the bottom surface of the dust container.

34. The method according to claim 33, wherein the at least one plate rotates along with the rotating shaft.

35. The method according to claim 33, wherein the rotating shaft is co-axial with a central longitudinal axis of a filter.

36. The method according to claim 32, wherein the at least one plate comprises a movable plate and a fixed plate integrated with a casing of the dust container.

37. The method according to claim 32, wherein the driving device comprises an electric motor disposed adjacent a bottom wall of the dust container.

38. The method according to claim 29, wherein the at least one plate is connected to a rotating shaft that extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to the bottom surface of the dust container.

39. The method according to claim 38, wherein the at least one plate rotates along with the rotating shaft.

40. The method according to claim 38, wherein the rotating shaft is co-axial with a central longitudinal axis of a filter.

41. The method according to claim 29, wherein the at least one plate comprises a movable plate and a fixed plate integrated with a casing of the dust container.

42. The method according to claim 29, wherein the driving device comprises an electric motor disposed adjacent a bottom wall of the dust container.

43. A method of operating a vacuum cleaner having a suction motor that generates a suction power, a dust container that stores dust, a movable plate provided in the dust container, the movable plate being movable relative to a casing of the dust container to compress dust against a fixed plate integrated with the casing, and a drive device comprising a rotating shaft coupled to the at least one plate that drives the at least one plate, the rotating shaft being co-axial with a central longitudinal axis of a filter, the method comprising:

driving the driving device in one of a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction to move the movable plate in a first direction to compress dust in the dust container; and

driving the driving device in the other of the clockwise and counter-clockwise direction to move the movable plate in a second opposite direction, wherein the rotating shaft extends in a direction substantially perpendicular to a bottom surface of the dust container.
