Abstract

The present disclosure discloses a passive optical network (PON) user terminal comprising a passive optical network interface unit (PONIU) having access to a PON system, a service data distribution unit (SDDU) connected to the PONIU for distributing service data, a plurality of service processing units (SPUs) for receiving and accordingly processing the service data distributed by the SDDU, a power source for providing power to the above units, and a power supply control unit (PSCU) for controlling the activating/deactivating of the energy-saving power supply to the SPUs, the SDDU, and the PONIU. The present disclosure further provides a method for controlling the PON power supply and for reporting the power supply state. The present disclosure allows control of the energy usage of the PON user terminal to save power when a service in the PON user terminal is not used or when the user terminal uses a backup power source to supply power.

Claims

1. A passive optical network (PON) component comprising:

a power source comprising a main power source and a backup power source, wherein the main power source is provided by a user premises and the backup power source comprises a battery installed in the PON component;

a plurality of service processing units (SPUs) configured to process service data;

a service state checking unit that monitors usage of the plurality of SPUs;

a power supply control unit (PSCU) in communication with the power source and the plurality of SPUs, wherein the PSCU is configured to control the power supplied from the power source to the plurality of SPUs, and wherein the PSCU activates an energy-saving power supply mode to at least one of the SPUs when the at least one SPU is not in use and the main power source is functional, and deactivates the energy-saving power supply to the at least one SPU when the at least one SPU is needed;

a PON interface unit (PONIU) configured to receive the service data from a PON system; and

a service data distribution unit (SDDU) configured to receive the service data from the PONIU and distribute a different type of service data to each of the plurality of SPUs.

2. The component of claim 1, wherein the PSCU disconnects or decreases the power supplied to the SPU responsive to the service state checking unit detecting inactivity at the SPU.

3. The component of claim 1, wherein the PSCU activates an energy-saving power supply mode to the SPUs, the PONIU, and the SDDU when the SPUs are not in use, and deactivates the energy-saving power supply mode to one of the SPUs, the PONIU, and the SDDU when the one SPU is needed.

4. The component of claim 1, wherein the PSCU activates the energy-saving power supply mode to at least one of the SPUs when the main power source is disconnected and the backup power source is providing power.

5. The component of claim 4, wherein the PSCU activates the energy-saving power supply mode to at least one of the SPUs when the backup power source drops to a preset level.

17. The component of claim 1, wherein the different types of service data comprise:

cable television, telephone, and Ethernet.

18. The component of claim 1, wherein the PSCU activates the energy-saving power supply mode to all the SPUs, the PONIU, and the SDDU when all the SPUs are not in use;

and when one of the SPUs is needed, the PSCU deactivates the energy-saving power supply mode to the PONIU, the SDDU, and the needed SPU.

20. The component of claim 1, wherein the battery provides backup power to a video SPU, a data SPU, or both when the main power source is disconnected.

6. A passive optical network (PON) component comprising a processor configured to:

provide backup power to a plurality of service processing units (SPUs) within the PON component when a main power source is disconnected, wherein the backup power comprises a battery installed on the PON component;

monitor the usage of the plurality of SPUs;

responsive to detecting inactivity of all of the SPUs, activate an energy-saving power supply mode by a power supply control unit (PSCU) to the plurality of SPUs, a passive optical network interface unit (PONIU), and a service data distribution unit (SDDU); and

subsequently deactivate the energy-saving power supply mode to at least one of the SPUs, the PONIU, and the SDDU when at least one of the SPUs is needed,

wherein the PON component is an optical network unit (ONU) comprising the PONIU, the SDDU, the plurality of SPUs, and the PSCU, and

wherein the plurality of SPUs comprises a video SPU, a voice SPU, and a data access SPU.

7. The component of claim 6, wherein the processor is further configured to:

responsive to detecting inactivity of less than all of the SPUs, activate the energy-saving power supply mode to the inactive SPUs; and

subsequently deactivate the energy-saving power supply mode to the one SPU when the one SPU is needed.

8. The component of claim 6, wherein the energy-saving power supply mode disconnects or decreases the power supply to the SPUs, the PONIU, and the SDDU, and wherein the main power source is provided by a user premises.

9. A method for reporting a power supply state in a passive optical network (PON) optical network unit (ONU), comprising:

sending a message to an optical line terminal (OLT) to alert the OLT of the power supply state change in the PON ONU,

wherein a main power supply of the PON ONU is functional, and

wherein the message identifies which of a plurality of service processing units within the PON ONU had a power supply state change.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the message comprises an action identifier that indicates whether the PON ONU entered or exited an energy-saving power supply mode, and a PON ONU identifier that identifies the PON ONU associated with the message.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

receiving a reply message from the OLT as a response to the message.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the reply message accepts or rejects the action identifier and accepts or rejects the PON ONU identifier.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein the OLT does not return a response message to the PON ONU, but records the power supply state change of the PON ONU.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein the PON ONU comprises the plurality of service processing units (SPUs), a passive optical network interface unit (PONIU), and a service data distribution unit (SDDU).

15. The method of claim 9, wherein an energy-saving power supply mode disconnects or decreases the power supply to at least one of the SPUs, responsive to detection of inactivity at the SPU by a service state checking unit.

16. The method of claim 9, wherein power is not transmitted from the OLT to the PON ONU, and wherein the main power supply is provided by a user premises and a backup power supply is an installed battery.

19. The method of claim 9, wherein the power supply state change is responsive to detecting inactivity of at least one of the plurality of SPUs by a service state checking unit within the ONU.
