Abstract

A peritoneal dialysis system includes a hardware unit including a piston and at least one vacuum source; a door connected to the hardware unit, the door including a cavity, the cavity having a diameter; the hardware unit further including a structure positioned opposite the door, the structure defining an aperture; a disposable unit including first and second fluid receiving membranes, the disposable unit disposed between the structure and the door; the at least one vacuum source operable to apply a vacuum to at least one of the first and second membranes of the disposable unit; the piston, at least a portion of which moves through the aperture, in operation contacting one of the membranes, the piston including a piston head having a diameter smaller than the diameter of the cavity in the door; and a dialysis fluid opening enabling dialysis fluid to be pulled in between the first and second membranes.

Claims

1. A peritoneal dialysis system comprising:

a hardware unit including a piston and at least one vacuum source;

a door connected to the hardware unit, the door including a cavity, the cavity having a diameter;

the hardware unit further including a structure positioned opposite the door, the structure defining an aperture;

a disposable unit including first and second fluid receiving membranes, the disposable unit disposed between the structure and the door;

the at least one vacuum source operable to apply a vacuum to at least one of the first and second membranes of the disposable unit;

the piston, at least a portion of which moves through the aperture, in operation contacting one of the membranes, the piston including a piston head having a diameter smaller than the diameter of the cavity in the door; and

a dialysis fluid opening enabling dialysis fluid to be pulled in between the first and second membranes.

2. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first and second membranes is a flexible membrane.

3. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the disposable unit includes a rigid portion for supporting at least one of the membranes.

4. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the at least one vacuum applies a vacuum around the piston.

5. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the at least one vacuum applies a vacuum between the piston and one of the membranes.

6. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1, the piston including a vacuum passageway, and wherein the at least one vacuum applies a vacuum through the vacuum passageway to one of the first and second membranes.

7. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1, wherein in operation one of the membranes is sucked towards the cavity and the other of the first and second membranes is sucked to the piston head.

8. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the piston head and the cavity are at least substantially dome-shaped.

9. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1, wherein one of the first and second membranes includes a portion that fits inside the cavity.

10. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 9, wherein the membrane that fits inside of the cavity is a flexible membrane, and wherein the portion is a sealed area of the fitted membrane shaped to be sucked into the cavity.

11. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the structure defining the aperture includes a wall to which a vacuum chamber for the at least one vacuum source is formed.

The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 1, which includes a plurality of supply lines and a patient line connected to the disposable unit, the patient line for communication with an implanted patient catheter, and which includes a plurality of supply bags containing dialysate for communication with the plurality of supply lines.

13. A peritoneal dialysis system comprising:

a hardware unit including (a) a piston having a piston head and (b) at least one vacuum source;

a door connected to the hardware unit, the door including a cavity, the cavity having a diameter larger than a diameter of the piston head;

a disposable unit received by the hardware unit, the disposable unit including first and second fluid receiving membranes;

a dialysis fluid opening enabling dialysis fluid to be pulled in between the first and second membranes; and

wherein in operation (i) the disposable unit is positioned relative to the door such that the first membrane resides within the cavity, (ii) the at least one vacuum source applies a vacuum to the second membrane of the disposable unit, and (iii) the piston contacts the second membrane.

14. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 13, wherein in operation the disposable unit is positioned relative to the door such that the first membrane resides upward within the cavity.

15. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 13, wherein in operation the disposable unit is positioned relative to the door such that the at least one vacuum source applies a vacuum to pull the first membrane within the cavity.

16. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 13, wherein a portion of the first membrane in operation residing within the cavity is separated from an area of the first membrane surrounding the portion so as to be able to hold dialysis fluid flowing from the dialysis fluid opening.

The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 13, wherein the portion of the first membrane in operation residing within the cavity is a first portion that opposes a second portion of the second membrane to which the vacuum is applied, the second portion separated from an area of the second membrane surrounding the second portion so as to be able to hold dialysis fluid flowing from the dialysis fluid opening.

18. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 13, which includes a plurality of supply lines and a patient line connected to the disposable unit, the patient line for communication with a patient transfer set, and which includes a plurality of supply bags containing dialysate for communication with the plurality of supply lines.

19. A peritoneal dialysis system comprising:

a hardware unit including (a) a piston having a piston head and (b) at least one vacuum source;

a door connected to the hardware unit, the door including a cavity;

a disposable unit received by the hardware unit, the disposable unit including first and second fluid receiving members sealed to each other and defining a pump chamber;

a dialysis fluid opening enabling dialysis fluid to be pulled between the first and second members into the pump chamber; and

wherein in operation (i) the pump chamber of the disposable unit is positioned relative to the door such that the first member resides within the cavity, (ii) the at least one vacuum source applies a vacuum to the second member of the disposable unit at the pump chamber, and (iii) the piston contacts the second member at the pump chamber.

20. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 19, wherein the first member is a flexible membrane, the at least one vacuum source sucking the first member into the cavity to accomplish (i) during operation.

21. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 19, wherein the second member is a flexible membrane, the at least one vacuum source sucking the second member towards the piston head.

22. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 19, wherein the first and second fluid receiving members are sealed to each other so as to allow dialysis fluid to enter and exit the pump chamber.

23. The peritoneal dialysis system of claim 19, which includes a plurality of supply lines, a drain line and a patient line connected to the disposable unit, the drain line for communication with a drain, the patient line for communication with a patient, and which includes a plurality of supply bags containing dialysate for communication with the plurality of supply lines.

24. A peritoneal dialysis system comprising:

a hardware unit including (a) a piston having a piston head and (b) at least one vacuum source;

a door connected to the hardware unit, the door including a cavity;

a disposable unit received by the hardware unit, the disposable unit including first and second flexible membranes defining a pump chamber;

a dialysis fluid opening enabling dialysis fluid to be pulled between the first and second membranes into the pump chamber; and

wherein in operation (i) the pump chamber of the disposable unit is positioned relative to the door such that the at least one vacuum source sucks the first membrane into the cavity, (ii) the at least one vacuum source applies a vacuum to the second membrane of the disposable unit at the pump chamber, and (iii) the piston contacts the second membrane at the pump chamber.

25. A peritoneal dialysis system comprising:

a hardware unit including at least one vacuum source and a piston;

a door connected to the hardware unit, the door including a cavity;

the hardware unit further including a structure positioned opposite the door, the structure defining an aperture;

a disposable unit including first and second fluid receiving membranes, the disposable unit disposed between the structure and the door;

the at least one vacuum source operable to apply a vacuum to at least one of the first and second membranes of the disposable unit;

the piston, at least a portion of which moves through the aperture, in operation contacting one of the membranes, the piston including a piston head that is smaller than the cavity in the door; and

a dialysis fluid opening enabling dialysis fluid to be pulled in between the first and second membranes.
