Controlled evacuation ostomy device with external seal
First Claim
1. An ostomy device adapted to be affixed to skin surrounding a stoma of a body of a user for sealing a stoma extending through the skin of the body of the user to control evacuation of liquid and solid waste material through the stoma, said device comprising a cap-like member having a sidewall with an edge;
- adhesive means having an opening through which a portion of the stoma extends, said adhesive means sealing said edge of said cap-like member sidewall to the skin of the body of the user surrounding the stoma; and
stoma covering means, situated entirely externally of the body of the user within said cap-like member, draped over and around said portion of the stoma, said stoma covering means comprising a continuous, uninterrupted member with a peripheral edge fixed to said cap-like member so as to form a chamber, said chamber comprising a fluid entrance port and being pressurizable with fluid through said fluid entrance port to apply pressure to said stoma covering means member in a direction toward the body to press said stoma covering means member against said potion of the stoma to prevent the evacuation of liquid and solid waste through the stoma and further comprising means for sealing said fluid entrance port to prevent the fluid from escaping said chamber after it is pressurized.

Abstract
A flexible membrane is situated within a rigid or semi-rigid cap. The edge of the cap wall is adhesively fixed to the tissue surrounding the stoma. The interior of the cap is pressurized to press the membrane to seal the stoma against the discharge of solid and semi-solid waste. Gas escapes through a vent with a filter element. The cap can be pressurized by an external pump or an integral pump member situated on top of the cap. A relief valve prevents over pressurization. A collection pouch can be provided as part of a device. The device can be removably mounted on a standard two-piece faceplate.

23. An ostomy device adapted to be affixed to skin surrounding a stoma of a body of a user for sealing a stoma extending through the skin of the body of a user to control evacuation of liquid and solid waste material through the stoma, said device comprising recess defining means;
- adhesive means having an opening through which a portion of the stoma extends comprising a continuous, uninterrupted adhesive layer situated between and in direct contact with said recess defining means and the skin of the body surrounding the stoma, completely surrounding and enclosing the stoma on all sides for securing said recess defining means to the body such that said recess defining means forms a seal with the body completely surrounding and enclosing the stoma on all sides; and
stoma covering means, situated externally to the body, over said portion of the stoma, within said recess defining means, and comprising a continuous, uninterrupted member adapted to prevent evacuation of liquid and solid waste material through the stoma when pressed against said portion of the stoma, said recess defining means defining, with said stoma covering means, a chamber, said chamber comprising a fluid entrance port and being situated over said stoma covering means, said chamber being pressurizable with fluid through said fluid entrance port to press said stoma covering means against said portion of the stoma and further comprising means for sealing said fluid entrance port to prevent the fluid from escaping said chamber after it is pressurized, wherein said recess defining means and said stoma covering means define a second chamber therebetween and further comprising gas filtration means operably connected to said second chamber.
