Abstract

The disclosure describes a system that measures the distance between one or more electrodes and tissue of a patient, and controls one or more parameters of the stimulation delivered to the tissue by the electrodes based on the measured distance. The system controls the measurement of the distance between the electrodes and the tissue as a function of activity of the patient. The system uses, for example, a piezoelectric transducer to sense activity of the patient, and may determine whether or how frequently to measure the distance between electrodes and tissue based on the sensed physical activity. A piezoelectric transducer may be used both to sense activity and to measure the distance between the electrodes and the tissue.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

sensing activity of a patient;

measuring a distance between an electrode and a tissue to which the electrode delivers stimulation at a distance measurement frequency determined as a function of the sensed activity, wherein the tissue comprises neural tissue and the stimulation comprises neurostimulation; and

adjusting a parameter of the stimulation based on a change in the measured distance.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting the stimulation parameter comprises adjusting at least one of a pulse amplitude, a pulse width, or a pulse rate.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein sensing activity comprises sensing activity via a piezoelectric transducer.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the electrode is located on a lead, and sensing activity comprises sensing activity via a sensor located on the lead.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein measuring the distance comprises ultrasonically measuring the distance.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein ultrasonically measuring the distance comprises ultrasonically measuring the distance using a piezoelectric transducer.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein sensing activity comprises sensing activity via the piezoelectric transducer.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising comparing the sensed activity to a threshold, and wherein measuring the distance comprises measuring the distance at the distance measurement frequency when the sensed activity exceeds the threshold.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising comparing the sensed activity to a plurality of thresholds, each of the thresholds associated with a respective one of a plurality of distance measurement frequencies, and wherein the distance measurement frequency is determined based on the comparison.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the tissue comprises tissue of the spinal cord.

11. A method comprising:

sensing activity of a patient;

measuring a distance between an electrode and a tissue of the patient to which the electrode delivers stimulation based on the sensed activity, wherein measuring the distance comprising measuring a first distance value between the electrode and the tissue at a first time and measuring a second distance value between the electrode and the tissue at a second time; and

adjusting a parameter of the stimulation delivered by the electrode to the tissue responsive to determining that the first distance value is different than the second distance value.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein adjusting the stimulation parameter comprises adjusting at least one of a pulse amplitude, a pulse width, or a pulse rate responsive to determining that the first distance value is different than the second distance value.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein sensing activity comprises sensing activity via a piezoelectric transducer.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the electrode is located on a lead, and sensing activity comprises sensing activity via a sensor located on the lead.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein measuring the distance comprises ultrasonically measuring the distance.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein ultrasonically measuring the distance comprises ultrasonically measuring the distance using a piezoelectric transducer.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein sensing activity comprises sensing activity via the piezoelectric transducer.

18. The method of claim 11, further comprising comparing the sensed activity to a threshold, and wherein measuring the distance comprises measuring the distance when the sensed activity exceeds the threshold.

19. The method of claim 11, further comprising comparing the sensed activity to a plurality of thresholds, each of the thresholds associated with a respective one of a plurality of distance measurement frequencies, and wherein measuring the distance comprises measuring the distance at one of the plurality of distance measurement frequencies based on the comparison.

20. The method of claim 11, wherein measuring the distance comprises measuring the distance at a distance measurement frequency determined as a function of the sensed activity.

21. The method of claim 11, wherein the tissue is neural tissue and the stimulation is neurostimulation.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the tissue is tissue of the spinal cord.

23. A system comprising:

means for sensing physical activity of a patient;

means for measuring the distance between an electrode and a tissue to which the electrode delivers stimulation at a distance measurement frequency determined as a function of the sensed physical activity, wherein the tissue comprises neural tissue and the stimulation comprises neurostimulation; and

means for adjusting a parameter of the stimulation based on a change in the measured distance.

24. A system comprising:

means for sensing activity of a patient;

means for measuring a distance between an electrode and a tissue of the patient to which the electrode delivers stimulation based on the sensed activity, wherein the means for measuring the distance comprises means for measuring a first distance value between the electrode and the tissue at a first time and for measuring a second distance value between the electrode and the tissue at a second time; and

means for adjusting a parameter of the stimulation delivered by the electrode to the tissue responsive to determining that the first distance value is different than the second distance value.
