1. A method for receiving broadcast messages in a spread spectrum telecommunications system for maximizing standby time in remote stations configured to receive the broadcast messages, the method comprising:
- associating broadcast message categories with bit indices of a broadcast indicator bit stream by hashing desirable said broadcast message categories via a pre-determined hashing function to determine said bit indices;
receiving one or more broadcast indicator bits of the broadcast indicator bit stream on a modified quick paging channel that includes a plurality of quick paging slots;
receiving one or more incoming page indicator bits on the modified quick paging channel;
comparing each of said one or more broadcast indicator bits and each of the one or more incoming page indicator bits to an on or off value; and
determining from said comparison whether to subsequently receive and decode an encoded bit stream that follows said broadcast indicator bit stream by a pre-determined time interval,wherein said modified quick paging channel comprises a first section of N said broadcast indicator bits, a second section of (QPS-2N)/2 said incoming page indicator bits, and a third section of (QPS-2N)/2 said incoming page indicator bits, where QPS equals the total number of bits in one quick paging slot, wherein N is a predetermined value.
