Abstract

A gaming system for conducting a wagering game includes a handheld gaming machine configured to play at least one game and a controller. The controller is configured to base eligibility of the handheld gaming machine for a game-related feature at least upon a location of the handheld gaming machine and/or a proximity of the handheld gaming machine to an external device.

Claims

1. A gaming system, comprising

a network;

a handheld gaming machine configured to play at least one wagering game; and

a controller configured to;

determine if said handheld gaming machine is connected to the network;

responsive to said handheld gaming machine being connected to the network, determine at least one of a location of said handheld gaming machine and a proximity of said handheld gaming machine to an external device;

determine if said handheld gaming machine is eligible for a game-related feature, the controller basing eligibility of said handheld gaming machine for the game-related feature at least upon one of the location of said handheld gaming machine and the proximity of said handheld gaming machine to the external device; and

responsive to said handheld gaming machine being eligible for the game-related feature, enabling an individual wagering game, a group wagering game, or both, in addition to the at least one wagering game already available for play on said handheld gaming machine.

The gaming system according to claim 1, wherein enabling the individual wagering game, the group wagering game, or both, includes outputting information associated with the game-related feature via a speaker, a display, or a combination thereof, the speaker and the display being external to said handheld gaming machine.

3. The gaming system according to claim 1, wherein said controller is further configured to

responsive to said handheld gaming machine being connected to the network, determine if said handheld gaming machine is eligible for a second game-related feature distinct from the game related feature, the controller basing eligibility of said handheld gaming machine for the second game-related feature at least upon one of a location of said handheld gaming machine and a proximity of said handheld gaming machine to a second external device distinct from the external device;

responsive to said handheld gaming machine being eligible for the second game-related feature, enabling a second individual game, a second group game, or both, in addition to the at least one game already available for play on said handheld gaming machine.

The gaming system according to claim 1, wherein said external device is an external gaming device configured to display a wagering game, and wherein said controller is further configured to base eligibility of said handheld gaming machine for the game-related feature upon a location of said handheld gaming machine relative to the external gaming device within a gaming establishment.

5. The gaming system according to claim 4, wherein said external gaming device comprises another handheld gaming machine.

6. The gaming system according to claim 1, wherein said location is determined using a wireless signal output by said handheld gaming machine.

The gaming system according to claim 1, wherein said location is determined using at least one of a global positioning system, triangulation of a signal output by said handheld gaming machine, a comparison of a signal output by said handheld gaming machine between at least two different receivers, a RFID, a short range wireless connection between said handheld gaming machine and a stationary receiver, a short range wireless connection between said handheld gaming machine and a mobile receiver, or a physical connection of said handheld gaming machine to a port.

8. The gaming system according to claim 1, wherein said location is determined based on at least one factor, said at least one factor comprising a signal strength of a signal output by said handheld gaming machine relative to at least one receiving device.

9. The gaming system according to claim 1, wherein said game-related feature comprises at least one of a basic wagering game, a bonus game, a collaborative group game, or a competitive group game.

The gaming system according to claim 1, wherein said game-related feature comprises an award or comprises game content, said game content comprising at least one of a symbol, symbol set, color, color scheme, icon, character, video sequence, animated sequence, image, arrangement, sound, music, and song.

11. A gaming system, comprising

a wireless network;

a handheld gaming machine configured to play at least one wagering game and wirelessly communicate with the wireless network; and

a controller configured to communicatively couple to said handheld gaming machine via the wireless network, wherein said controller is further configured to;

determine if said handheld gaming machine is wirelessly connected to the wireless network;

responsive to said handheld gaming machine being connected to the wireless network, determine at least one of a location of said handheld gaming machine and a proximity of said handheld gaming machine to an external device;

determine if said handheld gaming machine is eligible for at least one of wagering-game-related content and non-game related content, neither of which is currently available on said handheld gaming machine, the controller basing eligibility of said handheld gaming machine for the at least one of wagering-game-related content and non-game content at least upon one of the location of said handheld gaming machine and the proximity of said handheld gaming machine to the external device; and

responsive to said handheld gaming machine being eligible, wirelessly communicating, via the wireless network, the at least one of wagering-game-related content and non-game content to said handheld gaming machine.

12. The gaming system according to claim 11, wherein said non-game content comprises at least one of music, images, textual messages, video images, codes, keys, electronic coupons, and non-game-related code, none of which are currently available on said handheld gaming machine.

13. The gaming system according to claim 11, wherein said location comprises at least one of hot spot, a room, and an area in at least one gaming establishment.

14. The gaming system according to claim 11, wherein said external device comprises another handheld gaming machine in a gaming area of a gaming establishment shared with said handheld gaming machine.

15. The gaming system according to claim 11, wherein said controller is further configured to:

responsive to said handheld gaming machine being connected to the wireless network and being eligible for the wagering-game-related feature, enabling one or more additional features in the at least one game not currently enabled on said handheld gaming machine.

16. A method of conducting a wagering game on a gaming system having a controller and a wireless network, the method comprising:

determining, via the controller, if a handheld gaming machine is connected to the wireless network;

if the handheld gaming machine is connected to the wireless network, determining, via the controller, a location of said handheld gaming machine within a gaming establishment;

determining, via the controller, an eligibility of said handheld gaming machine for at least one of a wagering-game-related feature and a non-game related content, neither of which is currently available on said handheld gaming machine, the eligibility being based, at least in part, upon said location of said handheld gaming machine within the gaming establishment; and

communicating, via the wireless network, the at least one of wagering-game-related feature and non-game content to said handheld gaming machine in response to said handheld gaming machine being eligible and connected to the wireless network.

17. The method for conducting a wagering game according to claim 16, further comprising conducting the wagering game on said handheld gaming machine, wherein said wagering-game-related feature comprises enabling an individual wagering game or a group wagering game in addition to the wagering game.

The method for conducting a wagering game according to claim 16, wherein said act of determining a location of a handheld gaming machine comprises determining a location of the handheld gaming machine within at least one of a room within a gaming establishment or within a hot spot associated with a gaming establishment.

19. The method for conducting a wagering game according to claim 18, further comprising:

moving said hot spot from at least a first location to at least a second location or moving said hot spot between among a plurality of predetermined locations.

20. The method for conducting a wagering game according to claim 19, further comprising:

designating at least one of a selected and a randomly selected handheld gaming machine to act as said hot spot.

21. The method for conducting a wagering game according to claim 16, wherein said act of determining a location of a handheld gaming machine comprises using a wireless signal output by said handheld gaming machine.

22. The method for conducting a wagering game according to claim 16, wherein said act of determining a location of a handheld gaming machine comprises comparing a signal strength of a signal output by said handheld gaming machine relative to at least one receiving device.

23. The method for conducting a wagering game according to claim 16, wherein said game-related feature comprises an award;

and wherein the method further comprises the act of;

providing said award to at least the eligible handheld gaming machine or providing an award relating to said award to at least one other handheld gaming machine proximate to said eligible handheld gaming machine.

24. The method for conducting a wagering game according to claim 16, wherein said non-game related content comprises at least one of music, images, textual messages, video images, codes, keys, electronic coupons, and non-game-related code.

25. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium encoded with instructions for directing a gaming system processor or processors to conduct the acts of:

determining if a handheld gaming machine is connected to a wireless network of the gaming system;

if the handheld gaming machine is connected to the wireless network, determining a location of said handheld gaming machine within a gaming establishment;

determining an eligibility of said handheld gaming machine for a new wagering-game-related feature not currently available on said handheld gaming machine, the eligibility being based, at least in part, upon said location of said handheld gaming machine within a gaming establishment; and

enabling play of the wagering-new game-related feature on said handheld gaming machine in response to said handheld gaming machine being eligible and connected to the wireless network.
