1. A method for communications over a wireless local area network, the method comprising:

  • receiving at a wireless access point signals transmitted from client devices and signals transmitted from interfering devices, wherein the receiving coherently uses multiple antennas connected to a common local oscillator, wherein the receiving of the signals transmitted from the interfering devices is performed when no signals are transmitted from the client devices;

    measuring at the wireless access point from the received signals transmitted from the interfering devices at the wireless access point noise and interference capture samples;

    computing at the wireless access point from the measured noise and interference capture samples a characterization of noise plus interference due to the interfering devices;

    adjusting at the wireless access point receive gains and threshold levels based on the computed noise plus interference characterization;

    calculating at the wireless access point from the measured noise and interference capture samples a set of weights for an interference suppression spatial filter;

    spatially filtering at the wireless access point the received signals transmitted from the client devices using the calculated weights to produce a filtered signal, such that interference from the interfering devices is spatially nulled in the filtered signal; and

    adjusting at the wireless access point a correlation detection threshold based on the computed noise plus interference characterization.
