Abstract

A medical implant comprising a housing and an antenna member carried by the housing. The antenna member is configured to be capacitively coupled to body tissue in which the housing is implanted. This forms, together with the impedance of the body tissue, part of a resonant circuit. A reference electrode carried by the housing as a return for the antenna member also forms a further part of the resonant circuit. Transceiver circuitry is also provided and is operable as at least one of a source and a load for the antenna member and forms yet a further part of the series resonant circuit.

Claims

1. A medical implant comprising:

a housing configured to be implanted adjacent to body tissue;

an antenna member disposed in the housing and configured to be capacitively coupled to the body tissue, wherein the implant is configured such that the antenna member is not in direct contact with the body tissue;

a reference electrode configured as a return for the antenna member; and

a transceiver circuit operable as at least one of a source and a load for the antenna member, wherein the antenna member, body tissue, reference electrode and transceiver circuit collectively form a resonant circuit.

2. The medical implant of claim 1, wherein the resonant circuit is a series resonant circuit.

3. The medical implant of claim 2, wherein the resonance circuit further comprises an impedance matching network arranged between the antenna member and the transceiver circuitry.

4. The medical implant of claim 3, wherein the impedance matching network is configured to optimize a total load impedance, including a capacitance of the body tissue and a capacitance of the antenna member, for maximum power transfer between the transceiver circuitry and the body tissue.

5. The medical implant of claim 3, wherein the impedance matching network is electrically adjustable.

6. The medical implant of claim 5, wherein the impedance matching network is electrically adjustable to compensate for varied implant conditions.

7. The medical implant of claim 1, wherein the housing is sufficiently thin to facilitate the capacitive coupling between the antenna member and the body tissue.

8. The medical implant of claim 7, wherein the housing is further configured to have a relatively high dielectric co-efficient.

9. The medical implant of claim 1, wherein the reference electrode is disposed on the housing so as to be in direct contact with the body tissue when the housing is implanted.

10. The medical implant of claim 1, wherein the reference electrode is disposed within the housing and is configured to be capacitively coupled to the body tissue.

11. The medical implant of claim 9, wherein the reference electrode and the antenna member are capacitively coupled to each other when implanted.

12. The medical implant of claim 1, wherein the transceiver circuitry comprises one or more of a transmitter, a receiver, a demodulator, a detector and related signal processing circuitry.

13. The medical implant of claim 1, wherein the medical implant is an electrically stimulating medical device, and wherein the housing further comprises a stimulation drive circuit module.

14. The medical implant of claim 13, wherein the stimulation drive circuit module is configured to communicate with the transceiver circuitry via a data link.

15. The medical implant of claim 13, further comprising an internal battery, and wherein the stimulation drive circuit module is configured to perform one or more of generating the signals for stimulation, and monitoring the condition of the internal battery.

16. The medical implant of claim 13, further comprising a microprocessor to control the stimulation drive circuit module.

17. The medical implant of claim 1, wherein the antenna member is configured to capacitively couple radio frequency (RF) current into the body tissue.

18. The medical implant of claim 1, wherein the antenna member is a plate and the implant is configured such that the plate is not in contact with body tissue.

19. The medical implant of claim 18, wherein the plate is configured to create an amplified capacitance between the plate and the body tissue.

20. The medical implant of claim 19, further comprising a transceiver that operates at an RF frequency, wherein the amplified capacitance is amplified in comparison to a capacitance of body tissue at the RF frequency at which the transceiver operates.

21. The medical implant of claim 18, wherein the implant is configured such that capacitance of the plate to the body tissue is an order of magnitude greater than the capacitance of the body tissue.

22. The medical implant of claim 1, wherein the reference electrode is mounted on the exterior of the housing.

23. The medical implant of claim 1, wherein total antenna load is dominated by capacitance of the body tissue.

24. The medical implant of claim 1, wherein the body tissue forms a major part of the resonant circuit.

25. An electrically stimulating medical implant having a housing implanted in a patient, comprising:

an antenna member disposed in the housing, and configured to be capacitively coupled to the patient'"'"'s body tissue, wherein the implant is configured such that the antenna member is not in direct contact with the body tissue

a reference electrode at least one of disposed in or on the housing, and configured as a return electrode for the antenna member; and

transceiver circuitry operable as at least one of a source and a load for the antenna member,

wherein the antenna member, body tissue, reference electrode and transceiver circuitry collectively form a series resonant circuit.

26. The medical implant of claim 25, further comprising an impedance matching network arranged between the antenna member and the transceiver circuitry.

27. The medical implant of claim 26, wherein the impedance matching network comprises a network of one or more inductors and one or more capacitors.

28. The medical implant of claim 26, wherein the impedance matching network is electrically adjustable.

29. The medical implant of claim 25, wherein the housing is radio opaque to facilitate the capacitive coupling between the antenna member and the body tissue.

30. The medical implant of claim 25, wherein the housing is sufficiently thin to facilitate the capacitive coupling between the antenna member and the body tissue.

31. The medical implant of claim 30, wherein the housing is further configured to have a relatively high dielectric co-efficient.

32. The medical implant of claim 25, wherein the reference electrode is disposed on the housing so as to be in direct contact with the body tissue when the housing is implanted.

33. The medical implant of claim 25, wherein the reference electrode is disposed within the housing and is configured to be capacitively coupled to the body tissue.

34. The medical implant of claim 25, wherein the transceiver circuitry comprises a radio frequency circuit.

35. The medical implant of claim 25, further comprising a stimulation drive circuit module.

36. The medical implant of claim 35, wherein the stimulation drive circuit module is configured to communicate with the transceiver circuitry via a data link.

37. The medical implant of claim 36, wherein the data link is a digital radio data and control link.

38. The medical implant of claim 35, further comprising a microprocessor to control the stimulation drive circuit module.

39. A medical implant comprising a housing configured to be implanted in a patient'"'"'s body tissue and external unit disposed external to the patient'"'"'s body, the implant comprising

control circuitry disposed in the housing;

at least first and second electrodes each configured to be in contact with the body tissue, and connected to the control circuitry via leads;

a frequency-dependent isolating module interposed between the first electrode lead and the control circuitry, the frequency-dependent isolating module being configured to block stimulation signals generated by the control circuitry so as to permit the first and second electrodes, the first electrode lead, and the body tissue to form at least a portion of a resonant circuit configured to transmit signals between the control circuitry and the external unit.

40. The medical implant of claim 39, wherein each lead passes through the housing of the implant via a hermetically sealed feedthrough element.

41. The medical implant of claim 39, wherein the control circuitry includes transceiver circuitry configured to provide data to the external unit.

42. The medical implant of claim 39, wherein the control circuitry includes transceiver circuitry configured to receive radio signals from the external unit via at least one of the electrodes and its lead.

43. The medical implant of claim 42, wherein the transceiver circuitry includes an impedance matching network for the first electrode and the first electrode lead.

44. The medical implant of claim 39, wherein the control circuitry further includes a stimulation circuit module configured to generate stimulation signals for application to the patient'"'"'s body via at least one of the first and second electrodes.

45. The medical implant of claim 39, wherein the frequency-dependent isolating module comprises a radio frequency choke configured to pass lower frequency stimulation signals and block higher frequency radio signals so as to enable the first electrode to operate as a stimulation electrode.

46. The medical implant of claim 39, wherein the second electrode operates as a return electrode for the resonance circuit.

47. The medical implant of claim 39, wherein the isolating module is interposed between both of the first and second electrode leads and the control circuitry.

48. The medical implant of claim 39, further comprising a return electrode at least one of disposed in or on the housing to form part of the resonant circuit.

49. The medical implant of claim 48, wherein the return electrode is a plate mounted externally on the housing configured to be in direct contact with the body tissue.

50. The medical implant of claim 48, wherein the return electrode is mounted within the housing, and is configured to be capacitively coupled to the body tissue.
