Abstract

A delivery device includes a delivery tube having an elongate release member. An everted stent may be releasably captured by the elongate release member between the release member and the delivery tube. The captured and everted stent can be distally advanced to a target site, followed by manipulating the release member to free the captured stent. Some devices utilize distal advancement of the release member while other devices use proximal retraction of the release member to free the captured stent. Once released, the stent is free to self-expand or be expanded against the surrounding blockage and/or vessel walls. In some methods, a guide catheter or microcatheter is also included and disposed about the everted and captured stent to advance the stent, delivery tube, and release member to a location near the site to be stented.

Claims

1. A delivery device for delivering a stent, the device comprising:

a delivery shaft defining a lumen; and

an elongate release member disposed within the lumen defined by the delivery shaft, the elongate release member releasably securing an everted distal region of the stent between a distal region of the elongate release member and a distal region of the delivery shaft when a distal end of the elongate release member is disposed within a distal region of the lumen defined by the delivery shaft such that a distal end of the everted distal region of the stent is disposed distally of a proximal end of the stent to releasably secure the everted distal region of the stent within the lumen defined by the delivery shaft, wherein longitudinal movement of the elongate release member disengages the everted distal region of the stent from the elongate release member and frees the stent from the delivery shaft, wherein when the distal end of the elongate release member is disposed within the distal region of the lumen defined by the delivery shaft, the distal end of the everted distal region is disposed within the lumen defined by the delivery shaft and the proximal end of the stent is disposed outside of the lumen defined by the delivery shaft.

The delivery device of claim 1, further comprising a microcatheter defining a lumen and including an inner surface and an outer surface, the delivery shaft being supported within the lumen of the microcatheter, wherein a proximal region of the stent is disposed within the lumen of the microcatheter between the inner surface of the microcatheter and an outer surface of the delivery shaft when the distal end of the elongate release member is disposed within the lumen of the delivery shaft.

The delivery device of claim 2, wherein the delivery shaft includes an inner surface, the proximal region of the stent being supported between the inner surface of the microcatheter and the outer surface of the delivery shaft when the distal end of the elongate release member is disposed proximally of a distal end of the delivery shaft to support the everted distal region of the stent within the lumen defined by the delivery shaft.

4. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the elongate release member distal region releasably secures the everted distal region of the stent between an outer surface of the elongate release member distal region and an inner surface of the delivery shaft distal region.

5. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the elongate release member distal region has a profile dimensioned to form a friction fit between the everted distal region of the stent and the delivery shaft distal region.

The delivery device of claim 5, wherein the delivery shaft distal region includes a profile which complements the profile of the elongate release member distal region, and wherein the everted distal region of the stent is frictionally held between the profile of the delivery shaft distal region and the profile of the elongate release member distal region.

7. The delivery device of claim 6, wherein the elongate release member has sufficient strength in compression to advance the elongate release member distal region distally in the delivery shaft distal region to free the stent from the delivery shaft distal region.

8. The delivery device of claim 7, wherein a proximal region of the elongate release member is externally accessible.

9. The delivery device of claim 6, wherein the elongate release member has sufficient strength in tension to retract the elongate release member distal region proximally in the delivery shaft distal region to free the stent from the delivery shaft distal region.

10. The delivery device of claim 9, wherein a proximal region of the elongate release member is externally accessible.

11. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the lumen of the delivery shaft extends substantially from a proximal region of the delivery shaft to the distal region of the delivery shaft.

12. The delivery device of claim 11, wherein the lumen of the delivery shaft includes an intermediate region having an inside diameter dimensioned to support movement of the elongate release member.

The delivery device of claim 1, further comprising a microcatheter having a proximal region, a distal region, and a lumen through at least the distal region of the microcatheter, wherein the microcatheter distal region is disposed over the delivery shaft distal region to support a proximal region of the stent in the lumen of the microcatheter adjacent the delivery shaft when the distal end of the elongate release member is disposed within the lumen of the delivery shaft.

14. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein distal movement of the elongate release member disengages the elongate release member distal region from the the everted distal region of the stent and frees the stent from the delivery shaft.

15. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein when releasably secured between the distal region of the elongate release member and the distal region of the delivery shaft, the entire everted distal region of the stent is disposed within the lumen defined by the delivery shaft.
