Abstract

The invention describes how a consumer can hold their NFC enabled device in proximity to an NFC enabled point-of-sale terminal and with a single “wave” or “tap” to automatically redeem coupons, pay for a purchase using a default payment card or a selected card, view receipts view reward point balances, and receive relevant coupons and other digital artifacts both before and after the purchase. The NFC enabled device includes a secure element with a payment application, payment credentials, and other digital artifacts such as coupons. The secure element can be internal to the mobile device, externally affixed to the mobile device, or inserted into a slot within the body of the mobile device.

Claims

1. A method for conducting a near field communication payment transaction between a secure element coupled to a hand-held mobile communication device and a Point-of-Sale terminal, the method comprising:

utilizing the secure element coupled to the hand-held mobile communication device,

the secure element including;

a memory storing multiple applications and payment credentials,

a processor that executes a payment application stored on the memory in response to a near field communication interaction between the secure element and a Point-of-Sale terminal,

a near field communication transceiver that sends transaction data including payment credentials corresponding to a default payment method associated with the executed application through a first communication channel;

executing, by the processor of the secure element that is activated by a near field communication interaction between the secure element and the Point-Of-Sale terminal, the payment application on the processor of the secure element in response to a near field communication interaction between the secure element and a Point-Of-Sale terminal using the near field communication transceiver of the secure element;

wirelessly transmitting the transaction data which includes payment credentials corresponding to a default payment method associated with the executed payment application from the secure element to the Point-Of-Sale terminal over the first communication channel;

wherein transmission of the transaction data results from executing the payment application on the processor of the secure element in response to a near field communication interaction between the secure element and the Point-Of-Sale terminal; and

automatically applying, by the payment application, one or more coupons stored in the memory of the secure element during the near field communication payment transaction and updating a total purchase amount based on the one or more applied coupons during the processing of the near field communication payment transaction.

The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving at a mobile application executing on the hand-held mobile device, one of a digital artifact and one of an advertisement, receipt, ticket, media, and content delivered from a management server through a second communication channel, wherein the digital artifact includes meta data which can trigger a secondary call-to-action, wherein the secondary call-to-action can prompt the user to enter an email address, accept coupons/rewards, or opt-in for alerts and notifications.

The method of claim 1 further comprising sending, by the management server, a digital artifact to the hand-held mobile communication device based on targeting parameters and further wherein the targeting parameters correlate personal information and transaction history stored at the management server.

The method of claim 3, wherein personal information includes user location, gender, age, interest, or affiliations and wherein transaction history include historical payment transactions, real-time payment transactions, banking transactions, bill pay, merchants, price-level, spend categories, transactions conducted through the mobile device, or transactions downloaded from banks.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the digital artifacts include meta data associated with digital artifacts, and further wherein digital artifact include an advertisement, receipt, ticket, coupon, media, or content.

The method of claim 1 further comprising sending, by the management server, a digital artifact to the mobile application when the user browses a particular screen of the mobile application that specifies unique real-estate, using proximity services such as near field communications that specifies a unique code, or geographic location using Location Based Services, and further wherein digital artifact include an advertisement, receipt, ticket, coupon, media, or content.

7. The method of claim 1 further comprising transmitting a shopping list from the hand-held mobile communication device to the Point-Of-Sale terminal prior to the near field communication interaction.

The method of claim 1, wherein a digital artifact is delivered to the mobile application based on consumer tapping a LBS/contactless/RFID cell phone against a smart poster, RFID/Bluetooth/LBS enabled kiosk, or other device, and wherein digital artifact include an advertisement, receipt, ticket, coupon, media, or content.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising receiving, at the secure element, the digital artifact after the purchase from the point of sale terminal via the near field communication interaction, wherein the digital artifact is a receipt, coupon, ticket, or return/refund policy.

The method of claim 1, wherein the digital artifacts received at the hand-held mobile communications device are from the management server, wherein the management server received the digital artifacts from the Point-Of-Sale device after the purchase, and wherein the digital artifacts are a receipt, ticket, coupon, or return/refund policy.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising transmitting transaction data from the hand-held mobile communications device to a second hand-held mobile communications device using the devices'"'"' transceivers, Bluetooth, or WIFI.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the secure element is affixed externally to the hand-held mobile communication device, but not electronically connected to the hand-held mobile communication device;

affixed externally to the hand-held mobile communication device and electronically coupled to the hand-held mobile communication device, embedded within a slot that may be removeably coupled to the hand-held mobile communication device;

or permanently embedded within the body of the hand-held mobile communication device.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising implementing a security tool at the mobile application wherein the security tool comprises one or more of the following:

prompting the user to login to the hand-held mobile device, use of biometrics to authenticate the user before authorizing the transaction, disabling use of the mobile application through the server by invalidating the session key, timing out a given communication session between the mobile application and the server after a pre-determined amount of time of inactivity, prompting the user to enter a payment limit PIN in response to a pending purchase exceeding a pre-determined amount, temporarily disabling the secure element, permanently disabling the secure element, deleting all cached data stored in the memory of the hand-held mobile device, and storing encrypted securing codes on the hand-held mobile device, wherein disabling the secure element prevents near field communication payments, coupon redemption and ticket redemption.

14. The method of claim 1 further comprising changing a status of the digital artifact received at the hand-held mobile communications device, wherein the status is one of assigned, saved, redeemed and deleted.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising exchanging, by a processor of the hand-held mobile communication device, data with the secure element processor when the processor of the hand-held mobile communication device is electrically coupled to the secure element.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein utilizing the secure element further comprises storing one of a ticketing application, an identity application and a coupon application on the secure element.

17. A hand-held mobile device for conducting a near field communication payment transaction with a point-of-sale terminal physically distinct from the hand-held mobile device, the hand-held mobile device comprising:

a first processor that executes a mobile application;

a secure element coupled to the hand-held mobile device, the secure element comprising;

a memory storing payment application and payment credentials, the execution of the payment application facilitating the transfer of transaction data including payment credentials from the secure element to the Point-Of-Sale terminal;

a second processor, activated by a near field communication interaction between the secure element and a Point-Of-Sale terminal, that executes the payment application in response to a near field communication interaction between the secure element and a Point-Of-Sale terminal, wherein the second processor automatically applies coupons stored in the memory of the secure element and updates the total purchase amount in accordance with the coupon value during the processing of the near field communication payment transaction; and

a near field communication transceiver that sends transaction data including the payment credentials corresponding to a default payment method associated with the executed payment application through a second communication channel from the secure element to the Point-Of-Sale terminal.

The device of claim 17, wherein the mobile application running on the hand-held mobile device of the user receives from a management server a digital artifact, wherein the digital artifact includes meta data which can trigger a secondary call-to-action, wherein the secondary call-to-action can prompt the user to enter an email address, accept coupons/rewards, or opt-in for alerts and notifications and wherein the digital artifact is an advertisement, receipt, ticket, media, and content delivered from the management server through a first communication channel.

The device of claim 17, wherein the mobile application running on the hand-held mobile device of the user receives from the management server a digital artifact based on targeting parameters and further wherein the targeting parameters correlate personal information and transaction history stored at the management server.

The device of claim 19, wherein personal information includes user location, gender, age, interest, or affiliations and wherein transaction history include historical payment transactions, real-time payment transactions, banking transactions, bill pay, merchants, price-level, spend categories, transactions conducted through the hand-held mobile device, or transactions downloaded from banks.

21. The device of claim 18, wherein the digital artifacts include meta data associated with digital artifacts, and further wherein digital artifact include an advertisement, receipt, ticket, coupon, media, or content.

The device of claim 17, wherein the mobile application running on the hand-held mobile device of the user receives from the management server a digital artifact when the user browses a particular screen of the mobile application that specifies unique real-estate, using proximity services such as near field communications that specifies a unique code, or geographic location using Location Based Services, and further wherein digital artifact includes an advertisement, receipt, ticket, coupon, media, or content.

The device of claim 17, wherein a digital artifact delivered to the mobile application is based on consumer tapping a LBS/contactless/RFID cell phone against a smart poster, RFID/Bluetooth/LBS enabled kiosk, or other device, and further wherein digital artifact include an advertisement, receipt, ticket, coupon, media, or content.

24. The device of claim 17, wherein a digital artifact received at the secure element after the purchase from the point of sale terminal via the near field communication interaction is a receipt, coupon, ticket, or return/refund policy.

25. The device of claim 18, wherein the digital artifact received at the hand-held mobile device from the management server which receives them from the Point-Of-Sale terminal after the purchase is a receipt, ticket, coupon, or return/refund policy.

26. The device of claim 17, wherein the secure element is affixed externally to the hand-held mobile device, but not electronically connected to the hand-held mobile device;

affixed externally to the hand-held mobile device and electronically coupled to the hand-held mobile device, embedded within a slot that may be removably coupled to the hand-held mobile device;

or permanently embedded within the body of the hand-held mobile device.

27. The device of claim 17, wherein the secure element further comprises a ticketing application, identity application, and coupon application.

28. The device of claim 17, wherein the secure element further comprises coupons, tickets, and an identification code.

29. The device of claim 17, wherein the mobile application has a security tool wherein the security tool comprises one or more of the following:

prompting the user to login to the hand-held mobile device, use of biometrics to authenticate the user before authorizing the transaction, disabling use of the mobile application through the server by invalidating the session key, timing out a given communication session between the mobile application and the server after a pre-determined amount of time of inactivity, prompting the user to enter a payment limit PIN in response to a pending purchase exceeding a pre-determined amount, temporarily disabling the secure element, permanently disabling the secure element, deleting all cached data stored in the memory of the hand-held mobile device, and storing encrypted securing codes on the hand-held mobile device, wherein disabling the secure element prevents near field communication payments, coupon redemption and ticket redemption.

30. The device of claim 17, wherein the first processor of the hand-held mobile device exchanges data with the secure element processor when the first processor is electrically coupled to the secure element.
